20.01.2022 Five things you can do to support your child’s literacy. Parents play an important role in developing a child’s literacy skills. Here are five things you can do with your child at home to support their literacy skills:... 1. Set aside time for reading every day. Reading before bedtime is a good habit to get into. 2. Use your finger to move across the page with each word to help your child identify and remember words and sounds. 3. Try to be patient when reading with your child and try to emphasise reading accuracy over speed. 4. When reading to your child, read stories with expression. This will make it more engaging and interesting for your child. 5. You can also play word games, point out and talk about word meanings when reading together. #literacy #reading #helpchildrenread

17.01.2022 Another September birthday in our wonderful team. Happy Birthday Tina!

16.01.2022 Albert Einstein once said that "if I can't picture it, I can't understand it." This can be particularly true when it comes to reading, and there are those people who are able to read a text perfectly but are then unable to recall or answer any questions about what they have read. Using the idea of 'concept imagery' and research based programs such as Visualising and Verbalising, we can develop the ability to visualise or create a moving picture of the information we have read. This in turn helps us to process the language of what we have read, understand it and then recall it. After all, 'a picture is worth a thousand words'.

14.01.2022 Research has shown that it is extremely important to treat stuttering before a child starts school. A Speech Pathologist is trained in stuttering treatment and management. If you notice your child is stuttering, or concerned your child may be stuttering, it is important to contact a Speech Pathologist, at least one year prior to starting school. There are also strategies and techniques that can be used to help manage stuttering in adolescents and adults. Check out our blog post on stuttering for more information on stuttering and please get in touch on (02) 9398 3020 if you have any concerns. #stutteringtherapy #speechtherapy #children #health https://eastsidespeech.com.au/when-is-the-best-time-to-trr/

11.01.2022 SO much rain! All the indoors time & wet weather provides lots of natural opportunities to practice or introduce lots of speech targets for littles ones. "ooo" for the wind, "tap tap", "splash" for the rain, lots of animal and vehicle sounds when doing indoor play. Thanks to https://unsplash.com/@papidridri44 for the photo!"

10.01.2022 Today is Word Down Syndrome Day! As of 2019, it is estimated that there are 13,000-15,000 individuals with Down Syndrome in Australia (Down Syndrome Australia, 2021). It is the most common occurring chromosomal condition. Speech therapists play an important role in facilitating communication difficulties that individuals with Down Syndrome experience. For example, speech therapists can work on communication skills, including:... Pre-verbal skills: e.g. eye contact, turn taking, attention Receptive (understanding) language skills: e.g. following directions, understanding a range of spoken sentences and concepts Expressive (using) language skills: e.g. expanding vocabulary, expressing their ideas, improving speech clarity. Speech therapists can also support individuals with Down Syndrome in terms of swallowing and feeding difficulties. For further information, please feel free to get in touch with us on 9313 3020. #worlddownsyndromeday

07.01.2022 Shared book reading is an excellent way to enhance your child’s understanding and use of language. When book reading, there are a number of things to do besides reading the book word for word to further enrich your child’s experience with the book: Talk about the pictures to develop their understanding of the book Be curious about the book. Ask for their opinion, what they think will happen next? Ask different types of wh- questions (who, what, when, where, why, how) and model the correct answers! Talk about how the characters may be feeling to develop your child’s vocabulary of emotions
