25.01.2022 Today Eastwinds presented our very first Musica Viva online "Zoom concert" to students from Elwood Primary in Victoria and students of Musica Viva in Schools families. Featuring a combination of live presentation and pre-recorded video performance, Eastwinds group members each presented from different online locations. It was an extraordinary experience and the terrific feedback we received is invaluable as we tread this totally new medium of online performance. Much gratitude to Michael Sollis, Sonia de Freitas and colleagues at Musica Viva and to music teacher, Kaz and his students at Elwood and to all who participated. A great new and exciting frontier!!

The band fed off your great energy and support - it was a joyous night. 10.01.2022 Yasukazu Kano Meets Eastwinds at PS this Saturday evening Japanese master musician, Yasukazu KANO had forged a career playing in the famed taiko drumming group, Kodo, before branching out to specialise as a virtuoso of the 7-hole Japanese bamboo flute, the shinobue. Since the 1980s his career has blossomed and these days he performs in concerts and workshops throughout the world. The shinobue is a flute with a rich and expressive tonality that sings like a bird and evokes the... wind in a forest or an ocean breeze. Historically it has played an important role in Shinto music, as well as in the traditional Japanese art forms of Kabuki and Noh theatre. In Kanos skilled hands the shinobue is an instrument of deep emotional range as he stretches its lineage well beyond Japanese folk themes. In this concert Kanosan will be joined by members of EASTWINDS, featuring Estonian singer, Kristiina Maalaps, Persian ney and daf specialist, Esfandiar Shahmir and guest guitarist, Steve Vacca, leading the shinobue down variant and exciting paths of improvisation and shifting intercultural soundscapes. The past 8 years have been a magical ride. We've shared so many memorable times together. Above all we will also miss Kiki's amazing voice and presence!
