08.01.2022 The importance of creating art for others during COVID-19. We’ve been a little quiet here at Easy Peasy over the past few weeks because of a major project I have been involved in at the school where I teach. Every year my school holds an art exhibition for the local community. This art exhibition provides a real purpose for our art making and is valued by the whole community. Unfortunately this year with the impact of COVID-19 we were unable to hold this annual event. Not to... be beaten, we came up with a creative approach where we aimed at not only providing our students with a purpose for their art making but also at bringing a little joy to anyone who ventured past our school. We did this by creating large class murals where each class designed and painted a reimagined version of the Mona Lisa that was then displayed on the school fence. All students K-6 (over 750 of them) contributed to their painting and we were all so proud of what was achieved. In a year that has been so tough for so many it showed us that with a little perseverance and creativity we could still bring a lot of joy to our community. I guess why I am sharing this here is because I’d love my teaching colleagues to challenge themselves and think about what different or creative approaches they could take during this time to share their students’ work and to consider the positive impact that this may have.
