22.01.2022 ITS FEATURE FRIDAYfull video on the easystagecraft.com Blog! In 1921 the Victory Theatre opened as a 3,500 seat picture theatre in the heart of St Kilda, Melbourne. After a few years of booming life, remodeling and countless pictures the theatre was closed and modified for the last time. ... Opening again in 1974 as what we now call The National Theatre, the stalls had been removed, stage lifted and the original dress circle was now the auditorium, with a dance and ballet school underneath. Those projectors however are still sitting there from 1921, hidden away and locked in time. We have been granted special access to explore this projection world from days gone by and its like going into a time machine! Amazing! As some of the earliest theatre workhorses of their time, these beauties are still in use today at theatres around the world! ... 06.01.2022 ITS MECHANIST MONDAYDont forget to join us at easystagecraft.com today!! Welcome! Today we are going to look into a piece of classic theatre - The Phantom Of The Opera! Why not start with one of my favourites! Phantom has been open since January 26 1988, and has been seen by over 140 million people. But did you know there are even more fun facts hidden in the stage?... FACT 1: The original floor of the theatre was dropped by 10m to accomodate over 25 different stage lifts, winches and 150 trap doors for some of the magic moments like the rising of the candelabras and the quick escape of some actors! FACT 2: Over the last 30 years, over 2,500 Tonnes of dry ice have been used to create the rolling fog used in the boat scene. FACT 3: That gorgeous boat is remote controlled! It used to be pulled up and down stage by winch cables, and the phantom would rotate the top of the boat which sat on a dolly FACT 4: The original New York theatre chandelier controller is still running on the original 1988 computer - running MS DOS 3.1 (which was before windows!) FACT 5: The chandelier has been dropped over 10,000 times and travelled over 1,315kms! The magic of the Mechanists department doesnt just stop at the floor - it includes all the flown scenery, onstage props, onstage trucks with elephants, office furniture, stair cases and more. The mechanist department is in charge of execution, maintenance and upkeep of all the mechanical stage elements of the show. I hope you have enjoyed this weeks Mechanist Monday!
