23.01.2022 Its amazing how what you eat can transform your memory!

23.01.2022 If I had to choose one food that had superpowers, Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) would 100% be it! . I am sure that most (if not all!) of you know by now that it is completely safe to cook using EVOO. But did you know that it is not only safe, it is WAY more nutritious?? . How, you ask? ... Well, using EVOO in cooking (particularly in the context of eating a Mediterranean diet): Improves Nutrient Absorption (you wont lose all those wonderful vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in your cooking, because EVOO is helping you soak them all up!) Reduces Harmful Compounds (all the amazing antioxidants & polyphenols in EVOO are working hard to fight back against them!) Lowers the Glycemic Index of Your Meal (you can say hello to a lower and steadier blood sugar level, and avoid those dreadful sugar crashes!) Lowers Blood Pressure (crazy, I know- but how amazing right!) Preserves Omega 3 Fatty Acids (which can be very delicate little acids and die during the cooking process , but EVOO will prevent that from happening, so you have even more anti inflammatory goodness from your meal Its a no brainer isn't it!...Do as the Mediterranean countries have traditionally done for hundreds of years and enjoy cooking with your Extra Virgin Olive Oilxx #mediterraneandiet #evoo #extravirginoliveoil #meddiet #eatlivemediterranean #nutrition #polyphenols #antioxidants #Inflammation

21.01.2022 SLEEP QUALITY & THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET A link between following a Mediterranean diet and sleep quality waa discovered by researchers in Athens, Greece not too long ago . Researchers assessed the diets and sleep patterns of 1,639 adults ages 65 and over via questionnaires that participants completed... . The participants answered questions about: - How many times they woke up during the night - How long it took them to fall asleep & - Whether or not they felt refreshed upon waking; - & How often they ate dairy products, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, legumes, added fats, alcoholic beverages, and sweets. The results showed that those who followed a diet closest to the Mediterranean model were found to have better sleep quality than those whose diets were less similar to that ideal, meaning they reported that they tended to take less time to fall asleep, slept more soundly throughout the night, felt rested upon waking in the morning and throughout the following day, and felt they were able to get the sleep they needed! So there you go folks. Improving the quality of your diet may improve the quality of your sleep. And we all know how important those zzzzzs are for both our mental & physical health! #mediterraneandiet #eatlivemediterranean #sleep #sleepapnoea #insomnia #nutrition #nutrients #sleepquality

21.01.2022 Many people dont realise that dietitians are working on the front line as well. Covid-19 patients on ventilators cannot eat or drink, so a dietitian is responsible for ensuring they are receiving the correct nutrients and hydration via a tube feed. A shout out to all the amazing healthcare workers on the front line !

21.01.2022 Did you know that the Mediterranean Diet was officially given a heritage listing in November 2010 because UNESCO saw the importance of recognising & protecting it? UNESCO views the Mediterranean Diet as a set of skills, knowledge & practices and traditions that concerns taking food from the landscape to the table in the Mediterranean basin. It also concerns their processing, their preservation & their consumption. The Mediterranean Diet is not only recognized as being h...ealthy and sustainable for our wellbeing, but also healthy & sustainable for the environment The reason behind this is because it is a mostly plant based diet. Generally, this means it can reduce the strain on the environment & the emission of greenhouse gases . 17.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW THAT the humble bean is a common feature in every Blue Zone diet in the world? The five Blue Zones are the longevity hotspots of the world, where people live the longest. They include Ikaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy, Okinawa in Japan, The Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica & the 7th Day Adventist community of Loma Linda in California. People in the Blue Zones eat at least four times as many beans as Australians eat on average!... For example, on a daily basis: - Okinawans are eating soybeans; - Nicoyans are eating black beans; - Ikarians and Sardinians are eating lentils, chickpeas, lima beans & white beans! . Beans are full of fibre, vitamins and micronutrients and remove the need for animal protein (which we are all probably getting enough of) and they are CHEAP! . So if you want to improve your health, vitality and protect your future health, eat more beans! Aim for at least half a cup 3 x per week, or if you are extra motivated, include at least a half cup of cooked beans daily ! What is your favourite bean dish? . . #legume #beans #lentils #bluezones #longevity #ikaria #sardinia #okinawa #plantbasedprotein #reduceatarian #meatfreemonday #eatlivemediterranean

09.01.2022 BOOSTING A SALAD WITH WHOLEGRAINS . One of my favourite ways to boost a salad is to add a wholegrain! In particular, I love the addition of Barley husks, which is popular in Greek cooking <3 . Adding a wholegrain to your salad (or any meal) will:... Keep you fuller for longer (due to having a low GI) Increase the fibre content of your meal Increase the vitamin, mineral & antioxidant content of your meal . And if you include them in your diet frequently over the long term, wholegrains will most likely: . Increase the good bacteria in your gut Lower your cholesterol & heart disease risk Lower your risk of cancers such as colon cancer . Some other popular additions are quinoa, bulgar wheat, freekeh, buckwheat or it can be as simple as a slice of dense wholegrain bread/ some vitawheats! . What is your favourite wholegrain to add to salads or have alongside a salad? . #filling #yummy #dontmakeaboringsalad #mediterraneandiet #wholegrains #lookforthegrain #low GI #barleyrusks #dakos #cretan #mermizeli #mediterraneanfood #greekdiet #plantbased #nutrition #nutritionmatters

09.01.2022 THE ALL OR NOTHING APPROACH - Are you finding yourself constantly oscillating between being trying to beextremely healthy and adhering to a diet/meal plan/ lifestyle and the opposite extreme, where you find yourself out of control around food (& possibly binging)?... Our quest for perfect health can sometimes cause us to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves & actually create more harm than good. This is a topic that I find myself discussing with my clients on a regular basis, and I always remind them that: - We are not healthier if we adhering 100% to a diet/meal plan/ lifestyle regime- especially if it feels unnatural to us & requires extreme self discipline; - We cannot find true health through deprivation, restriction & a rigid mindset; - Physical health is only one aspect of health. If we need to compromise our mental and emotional health to acquire physical health, are we as healthy as we think? Finding the elusive happy medium between the extremities is difficult (especially if you tend to be a high achiever or have perfectionistic tendencies) however it is possible! If you wish to improve your health & how you feel: 1) Listen inwards (ask yourself what your body needs) instead of following external rules 2) Take small steps (no matter how small) and build up when you are ready 3) Look at your health as a long term, lifetime journey rather than something to quickly fix; 4) Above all: be kind to yourself! . <3 Dimi

07.01.2022 One of my favourite combos: Thick and creamy greek yoghurt, honey, walnuts & cinnamon <3 . Did you know that traditionally strained greek yoghurt has more protein & slightly less lactose compared to other yoghurts? This means that it may keep you fuller for longer and be easier to digest for sensitive tummies. . Just a tip: Double check that your Greek yoghurt doesnt have cream in the ingredients list! This means that it is not prepared in the traditional way. This may be t...he case in some yoghurts that are labelled as Greek STYLE yoghurt" Enjoy your weekend friends! <3 #mediterraneandiet #eatlivemediterranean #probiotics #probioticsupport #guthealth #fermentation #greekyoghurt #honey #wellbeing #dessert #snack #healthyeating #wellness #fitness #protein #lactose #IBS #lactoseintolerance #digestivehealth
