23.01.2022 To our EDV community, what a year it has been. Our community has had it so tough in 2020. As a team, we have been compelled to work harder, think smarter and innovate quicker to ensure our community were supported during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns in Victoria. Whatever your reason for being here, your stories and lived experience encourages and inspires the work of Eating Disorders Victoria and contributes to a better eating disorder service system for all Victorians. 2020 has been a lot to process. You have overcome so much. Be kind to yourself and most importantly, be proud. We look forward to supporting Victorians impacted by eating disorders in the year ahead. 22.01.2022 Did you know that over one third of Victorians experiencing an eating disorder are men or individuals who identify as male? Cultural messaging around the ‘ideal’ male body shape often leads to the desire pursue a muscular and lean physique. This can heighten body image concerns in males and may be a contributing factor to the development of an eating disorder. What are the warning signs? ... Excessive or compulsive exercise patterns (e.g. exercising when injured/unwell, exhibiting distress if unable to exercise) Preoccupation with fitness and/or muscle toning, body shape, weight and appearance Constant or repetitive dieting Restrictive eating behaviour (e.g. avoidance of certain food groups, counting calories/macros, fasting, replacing meals with fluids) Behaviours focused around food preparation and planning (e.g. obsessive meal planning and preparing, reading nutritional guides) Bingeing and/or purging Fear of gaining weight Social withdrawal or isolation Heightened sensitivity to comments or criticism about body shape or weight, eating or exercise habits Muscle enhancing drug use Many males with an eating disorder delay or avoid seeking help. This can be due to a number of reasons, for example: the stigma of having what many people regard incorrectly as a ‘female illness’, and an unwillingness to seem ‘weak’. Remember, if you are concerned about yourself or somebody you care about, EDV is here to listen and help. Head to our website to find out more about our broad range of support services. www.eatingdisorders.org.au

05.01.2022 This week, EDV and Eating Disorders Families Australia were alerted to the fact that the recent Yr 12 Further Maths exam contained questions that utilised themes around weight gain, BMI, body size, overweight and obesity. We know that this has been highly distressing for some students and parents. EDV and EDFA have written to James Merlino, the Minister for Education and Mental Health, and Stephen Gniel, the CEO of VCAA, to express our deep concern and disappointment about th...is issue. It is very disheartening to think that students who may have found this content distressing may have had their performance in this exam negatively impacted. Even more concerning is that some students may have had their eating disorder recovery compromised. Victoria is currently experiencing a surge in eating disorder new presentations and relapses in young people due to the impacts of COVID-19. There is more need than ever to be sensitive around issues such as weight, size, shape or attaching any type of classification to a person based on BMI. EDV and EDFA have asked the Minister and Mr Gniel to ensure there are checks and balances in place at VCAA to ensure content like this does not make its way into future exams or curriculum. Her advocacy extended to a period of Vice Presidency and Board Directorship at Eating Disorders Victoria from 2008-2010, a volunteer position that she gave tirelessly to. Sarah continued to be valued partner of EDV and contributed to robust discussions around community engagement and advocacy. Sarah’s voice publicly heralded the bod...y positivity movement in Australia, and her activism and media commentary will leave a lasting legacy in the broader community. We are aware that Sarah has asked that donations be made to EDV in lieu of flowers. This parting generosity signals Sarah’s deep commitment to improving the lives of people battling eating disorders. We thank you Sarah for sharing your knowledge and passion with our community. Our deepest condolences to Sarah’s loved ones, especially her two boys.
