17.01.2022 #AlternativeSeafoodNetworks have thrived on local and direct sales this past year highlighting the important role of #regionalfoodsystems in ensuring #r...esilience during crises and the need for diversity in #foodsupplychains. 16.01.2022 During the winter months mackerel often show up in Rhode Island waters. These fast moving schooling fish will often show up off Watch Hill one day, be gone the ...next, only to reappear off the Northend of Block Island. Without question, the fish are hard to pin down, locate, like a group of adolescents kids loose on the town. Few fish are as pretty as a mackerel fresh from a cold ocean. See more

08.01.2022 The festive winter flounder in its natural habitat These guys migrate annually in the early winter months from offshore to nearshore environments for spawning. Upon hatching, winter flounder stay in the estuary for 2-3 years, the longest of any flatfish in New England. At the early stages of life, they stay safe in the estuary by hiding in and among the eelgrass. Juvenile winter flounder are among the most abundant fish found in healthy eelgrass, but declines in eelgras...s cover from physical disturbances (boating, dredging, construction), severe storms, and nutrient pollution have decreased the capacity of these ecosystems to support the species. ...................................................... 1 ACTION you can take to protect eelgrass in your local area and keep flounder an important part of the ecosystem: CHECK YOUR LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE. This means ensuring that you have updated sewage tanks for your residence, as well as investing in and encouraging ecologically minded dock and boat moorings if you live on the coast. Visit the article by @savebuzzardsbay (https://www.savebuzzardsbay.org//installing-conservation-/) to learn more about their installation of conservation moorings and nitrogen-sensitive septic systems in the Falmouth Harbor area of Massachusetts.

03.01.2022 Whiting, a relative of the codfish, have been an important fishery resource to Rhode Island for as long as Rhode Islanders have gone fishing. There's a lot of h...istory in it. Here is the latest Fish Forward video. This is a two-part video, and close to 8 minutes long. So be sure to make some popcorn. The first part is about the fishery, history, and its importance to Rhode Island. The second part, after the red buoy, is about the markets, and how people eat them. We hope you enjoy it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPoz9jeBthY Rhode Island Small Business Development Center Eating with the Ecosystem @JohnLee #rhodeislandseafood #fishforward #NewEnglandSeafood #LocalSeafood #EatLocal #SupportLocal #RISeafood

02.01.2022 Skate are an often overlooked seafood delight. Though they may look like odd cousins of the stingray, skate have a mild, sweet flavor and meaty texture similar... to scallops. Skate is a sustainable, local seafood choice that should be bought fresh and cooked the day of purchase. Check out delicious recipes, Skate Piccata from @fearlessfishmarket and Skate w/ Capers and Butter from @eating_with_the_ecosystem cookbook, Simmering the Sea. #rhodyseafood #eatlocal #seafoodiesne #riseafood #rhodeislandseafood #sustainableseafood
