25.01.2022 Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ co-CEO Alex Ryvchin's latest article on the historic treaty between Israel and the UAE, the forces through which it was achieved and what it means for the region has been published in The Australian. "The process by which Arab nations have come to find peace with a sworn enemy is a remarkable one a mix of power politics and pragmatism. For the Gulf States, Iran has long been the chief adversary, spawning tit-for-tat strikes and ...reprisals and enormous bloodletting through proxy wars in Yemen and Syria. The Sunni States were spooked by the Obama Administrations signing of the nuclear deal with Iran which resulted in a $150 billion sanctions relief windfall for the regime allowing it to salvage its economy, expand its weapons testing programs and deepen sponsorship of Hezbollah, the Assad regime and the Houthis. For the Gulf States, seeing US and European leaders literally throwing their arms around the grinning Iranian foreign minister rather than exerting maximum pressure on the regime, or better still, facilitating its collapse, left them feeling utterly exposed. They observed that the world leader most outspoken and fearless in opposing the Iran Deal, and the only one who seemed to truly share their understanding of the brutal malevolence of the Iranian Mullahs, was the Israeli prime minister. 25.01.2022 This is absolutely appalling. When segments of society descend into conspiratorial thinking the evil of antisemitism always surfaces." Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ co-CEO Alex Ryvchin said.

24.01.2022 This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Nazi invasion and murder of over one million Jews in the Soviet Union - many by the Einsatzgruppen units sent for that specific purpose. Hosted annually by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, the theme for this year's annual commemoration is "Holocaust in the Soviet Union", with the keynote address to be delivered by Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ). 23.01.2022 The Jewish world, and the whole of humanity, has been left much the poorer for his passing, Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ co-CEO Peter Wertheim said. For Rabbi Sacks there was no hard and fast division between Jewish and secular knowledge. There was just knowledge. More important was the wisdom that comes with knowledge, and he had it in abundance. He had an extraordinary command of Jewish learning, moral philosophy and ethics, and a wonderful ability to convey his ideas to a wide audience, regardless of their level of education.

23.01.2022 Thank you to all of you who attended the Australian Jewish community tribute to the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zl co-hosted by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ and the Zionist Federation of Australia on Wednesday night, 11 November 2020. More than 600 people registered for the event, an extraordinary response given that invitations were issued only 48 hours beforehand. Click the link to go to the ECAJ website to watch the entire event on Youtube and read the tributes by presenters as now published on the ABC Religion and Ethics website, as well as personal tributes which were posted by participants, and have now been forwarded to Rabbi Sacks’ family.

22.01.2022 Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ co-CEO Alex Ryvchin wrote to the journalist on Twitter, stating, Whats the relevance of identifying this felon as Jewish? Would you have felt the need to reference his religion/ethnicity in the headline, caption and opening line if the crime were say domestic violence or speeding as opposed to illicit gold dealing? The journalist replied: There was no malice intended in mentioning this man was Jewish. 21.01.2022 The ECAJ opposes racism and supports Black Americans in their struggle against institutional racism including police brutality. We also acknowledge racial problems here in Australia including the urgent need to reduce Indigenous deaths in custody. The ECAJ was pleased to have partnered with the Jewish Community Council of Victoria in presenting a panel looking at the historic Black-Jewish civil rights cooperation in the United States, the shift made by the Black Lives Matter movement from this traditional cooperation, the influence of the BDS movement, and antisemitism. 21.01.2022 Hailing Monday's Israel-UAE events as what promises to be the beginning of a process that will see ordinary Israelis welcomed in every country in the world as equals and a deeper integration of Israel into the Middle East for the good of all the nations of the region, @ECAJewry co-CEO Alex Ryvchin said, This moment should be cherished by Jews around the world as a landmark achievement in the history of Zionism and the Jewish State.

16.01.2022 Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ co-CEO Peter Wertheim called it a convoluted attempt to whitewash the well-documented proliferation of antisemitism within the UK Labour party under Corbyn’s leadership. Like Corbyn himself, the supporters of the SRC resolution remain in denial of the anti-Jewish racism that flourished under Corbyn’s leadership, he said. They presume to understand better than Jewish people themselves, and better than an impartial statutory bo...dy, what is, or what is not, objectively antisemitic. I doubt the supporters of this disgraceful resolution would have the arrogance to tell Indigenous or Muslim people that they are inferior judges of what constitutes prejudice against their communities. This is the racist double standard that lies at the core of their resolution.

16.01.2022 Co-CEO of Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ Peter Wertheim commented: The ALP platform change is based on the misconception that Israel alone is responsible for the lack of progress in recent years towards a peace agreement with the Palestinians, leading to a two-State outcome, and that the Palestinian leadership is to be given a free pass for rejecting the offers that have been made to achieve such an outcome and deciding to boycott further negotiations. This vie...w is no longer held even by the Arab States which were once hostile to Israel and which have now normalised relations with it. They are no longer prepared to allow progress towards a wider peace in the Middle East to be held hostage to the intransigence of the Palestinian leadership. It is regrettable that the ALP platform change reflects a view that has failed to evolve with these changing circumstances in the region itself. The amendment to the ALP platform stops short of recognising a State of ‘Palestine’. According to Senator Wong’s explanatory statement, this is a decision for a future Labor government. She also said that it has no greater or lesser weight than the resolution on recognition of a Palestinian State passed at the ALP National Conference in 2018. However, if the ALP is elected to government, Anthony Albanese will be under greater pressure than previous ALP leaders to bow to those pushing an extreme line on this issue. Many people, not only in the Jewish community, will feel very let down by this outdated, one-sided approach that is at odds with Israel’s recent normalisation of relations with Arab states and Australia’s security and economic interests. The Palestinians have no entity that meets the criteria of a functioning state, and the platform change is at odds with the ALP’s own frequent statements that nothing should be done to pre-empt the outcome of key issues which can only be resolved through direct negotiations. Which entity is the ALP suggesting is deserving of statehood? The Islamists of Hamas? The Palestinian authority that continues a policy of incitement to murder Jews through their policy of ‘pay to slay’ and ongoing vilification taught to school children? Recognising a non-existent Palestinian State can only serve to entrench the Palestinian policy of rejectionism of Israel’s right to exist as the State of the Jewish people. Recognising a Palestinian state other than as part of an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians can therefore only act as a disincentive, rather than an encouragement, for the Palestinians to resume negotiations. It is entirely counterproductive. One would hope that a future ALP government will encourage the Palestinians to return to negotiations.

16.01.2022 The Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ warmly welcomes the announcement that Israel will sign a diplomatic agreement with the United Arab Emirates thereby achieving the full normalisation of relations. We warmly congratulate the governments of both nations. This announcement is a landmark moment not only in the history of the region but in the fulfilment of Israels founding vision of living in peace and good neighbourliness". 14.01.2022 Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ President Jillian Segal noted Biden’s long and affectionate relationship with major US Jewish representative bodies and sincere fondness for the State of Israel. Every major Jewish communal leader in the US has heard Mr Biden’s warm recollections of meeting Golda Meir and is aware of his steadfast support for Israel, she said. We sincerely hope that the Biden-Harris administration will advance its predecessors’ profoundly im...portant advancements toward securing IsraeliArab peace, and ending the cycle of war, misery and missed opportunities. We hope also that the new administration will fully grasp the malevolence of the Iranian regime and will avoid any steps that would empower the regime economically or diplomatically which would imperil the entire region. She added, Most of all, we look to a Biden administration to foster a new national cohesion that will counter the rise of antisemitism and other forms of extremism in the US.

14.01.2022 Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ co-CEO Peter Wertheim stated, As it has turned out, Sousa was utterly wrong not only about the cause of the blast but also about the perceptions of the people in Lebanon. Since the interview went to air, Beirut has been further rocked by massive anti-government demonstrations, with the demonstrators blaming the explosion on corruption and incompetence by their own government, not Israel. The ECAJ complaint calls for Aly to provide an unqualified, unreserved retraction and apology on-air during the program, and at the earliest opportunity.

12.01.2022 Yad Vashem is a shining light of memory, scholarship and commemoration, honouring the victims of the Shoah. Its purpose, through the uniqueness of the Shoah, is to affirm the innate dignity, humanity and equal rights of all people, and to serve as a universal warning of the calamities that may follow when there is any departure from this principle. Preserving the impeccable reputation and renown of Yad Vashem is of vital interest to the entire Jewish people, and to the whole ...of humanity. Those who have led Yad Vashem in the past have been torch-bearers of the institution’s values. Their distinguished lives and careers have enhanced the admiration and respect that Yad Vashem has earned from people of all backgrounds. In our view, Mr Effi Eitam does not fulfil these exacting requirements. He has stated publicly that Israel must expel most of the Arabs of Judea and Samaria, that Arab lawmakers will have to be evicted from the political system, and that Israel’s Arabs are a fifth column and an association of first-degree traitors. He has never retracted these comments. The rhetoric of demonisation and exclusion of entire communities defined by their ethnicity, and of ethnic cleansing, was precisely where the Shoah began. A practitioner of such rhetoric cannot lead an institution that is dedicated to warning of its dangers, without discrediting that institution’s core message and bringing it into disrepute. We urge the government of Israel not to proceed with the appointment of Mr Eitam as Chairman of Yad Vashem. Maintaining the integrity and credibility of the institution is of far more lasting importance than Israel’s internal politics. Israel is blessed with many distinguished citizens who have dedicated their lives and careers to upholding the sanctity and dignity of all human life, regardless of race or religion. In our view, this is the calibre of person who should be chosen to lead Yad Vashem.

11.01.2022 These agreements promise a future of fraternity, partnership and stability for the peoples of the region and signal the beginning of the end for the old tactics of anti-normalisation and boycott which were founded in racial hatred, fear and intolerance.

10.01.2022 The Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ, the national representative body of the Australian Jewish community warmly welcomes the announcement that Israel will sign a diplomatic agreement with the United Arab Emirates thereby ending the official state of conflict between the countries and achieving the full normalisation of relations. The UAE will become the third Arab country after Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994) to achieve peace with Israel. This announcement is a l...andmark moment not only in the history of the region but in the fulfilment of Israels founding vision of living in peace and good neighbourliness with neighbouring states and their peoples as enshrined in Israels Declaration of Independence. It also deals a major blow to the old strategy of anti-normalisation and permanent war with Israel which has only entrenched enmity and caused misery and bloodshed. We hope other nations in the region now follow in recognising that Israel is a permanent reality and in pursuing peace and good relations with the national home of the Jewish people. We warmly congratulate the governments of both nations and hope this announcement leads to the prompt establishment of bilateral relations in business, tourism, and cultural and academic exchanges to ensure that the state of peace and mutual understanding extends to the Israeli and Emirati peoples. "The re-emergence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has raised the awareness of the racism faced by African Americans. Mass protests and rallies against racism ensued after the death of George Floyd on May 25 and spread across the western world. Even in far-away Australia, it re-ignited the Stop Black Deaths in Custody movement which focusses on an aspect of the racism faced by indigenous Australians." Read the full article on our website.

09.01.2022 PETITION: Demand Jordan extradites celebrity terrorist Ahlam Tamimi, the Sbarro massacre bomber, now. On August 9, 2001, a Jordanian woman, Ahlam Tamimi, escorted a young Palestinian Arab male from Ramallah to Jerusalem by bus and taxi. Accustomed to dressing in traditional fashion, both disguised themselves to resemble tourists. She walked him from the Old Citys Damascus Gate into the Israeli capitals commercial centre. There, minutes after she rushed away to safety, he detonated the guitar case slung across his shoulder inside the crowded Sbarro pizzeria. Fifteen persons were murdered. 130 others were injured, many severely. A young mother remains hospitalised in a permanent vegetative state to this day. The goal is to reach 10,000 signatures. 09.01.2022 Philanthropy Australia announced the Australian Philanthropy Awards for 2020 on 17 November, with Gandel Philanthropy and the Australian Foundation for Yad Vashem winning the Bolder Philanthropy category, for the Gandel Holocaust Studies Program for Australian Educators. In a statement, the Chairman of Gandel Philanthropy, John Gandel AC highlighted the importance of Holocaust remembrance and its lessons for the young people of today being as relevant as ever. Given the worrying rise globally of racism, antisemitism and intolerance, the Holocaust messages of humanity, hope, care for the fellow human being, and the importance of protecting and upholding human rights, have arguably never been more important. 08.01.2022 What if we could predict when antisemitic incidents are most likely to occur? Is it possible to identify patterns linking these incidents to particular dates or events and therefore be better prepared to counter them? The research used data collected by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry - ECAJ, which include incidents reported... to the group or other Jewish state-based organisations across Australia, and published in ECAJ’s annual Report on Antisemitism in Australia. Data collected by community organisations like ECAJ are usually more detailed and complete than police statistics, due to the under-reporting of antisemitic and other hate crimes to the authorities. 02.01.2022 The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) welcomes historic peace agreements between Israel and UAE, Bahrain. The signing of the Abraham Accord between the State of Israel and the United Arab Emirates at the White House on Tuesday, and the announcement that the Kingdom of Bahrain will also establish a formal state of peace and mutual recognition with Israel are historic events both for the State of Israel and the Jewish people. They are a victory for peace and diplomac...y that continue the realisation of the Zionist vision of a Jewish State living in peace and harmony with its neighbours. These agreements promise a future of fraternity, partnership and stability for the peoples of the region and signal the beginning of the end for the old tactics of anti-normalisation and boycott which were founded in racial hatred, fear and intolerance. As we have seen following the UAE announcement, now that a state of peace has been declared between Israel and Bahrain, there will be rapid and extensive engagement between the nations including trade delegations, journalist missions, scholarly, scientific and cultural exchanges, and perhaps the scheduling of direct flights, all of which will serve to deepen understanding and ensure that peace becomes not only a declaration by leaders but a lived reality for Jews and Arabs. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry, as the national representative body of the Australian Jewish community warmly congratulates the United States and the parties to the agreements for their successful diplomatic efforts and for navigating a path towards peace and prosperity.
