12.01.2022 30 July is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Trafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year, thousands of m...en, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. People are trafficked for sexual exploitation, forced labour, forced begging, forced marriage; for selling children and as child soldiers, as well as for removal of organs. It affects almost every country in the world. Recognition of this day raises awareness so that we can work together to #EndHumanTrafficking Not sure what it is? 12.01.2022 Human Rights Month is here! Human Rights Month is an annual campaign run by the Commission to highlight the importance of protecting and promoting human rights.... It runs from 10 November each year, culminating on International Human Rights Day on 10 December. This is the sixth consecutive Human Rights Month we’ve run, but the first with a Human Rights Act in full operation. This Human Rights Month we’ll be focussing on the Act and answering some of the most frequently asked questions about what it protects, who it applies to, and how it’s being used to protect the rights of people in Queensland. There are resources over on our website including posters, training for workers and the community available during the month (including some free webinars!), and more you can check them out at https://buff.ly/3eBTLyq. [Image: an illustration of a hummingbird sits on a blue, aqua and white background. ‘Human Rights Month 10 November 10 December 2020’ is in blue text underneath the hummingbird. At the bottom of the tile is the QHRC logo on the left, and on the right is an orange box with ‘#HRM2020’ and ‘https://buff.ly/359DDAR’ in white text.]

10.01.2022 The Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa Bill, which would formally recognise traditional adoption practices in the Torres Strait, was introduced to Queensland Parliamen...t last week by Cynthia Lui, Member for Cook and the first Torres Strait Islander elected to any Australian parliament: "Today, I speak in my cultural truth that children who are raised under this practice deserve only love, respect, dignity and acceptance, and the questions about who they are and where they come from are irrelevant. This practice ensures that the child's cultural right is treated with the utmost respect and dignity they deserve." The bill will go before the Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Committee for inquiry. More information, including the statement of compatibility with human rights, is available on the parliament website at https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//current-inquir/MOKK2020. Submissions are due by 5pm on Friday 31 July.

If you’re unsure how, or not sure you should, talk to the Queensland Human Rights Commission on... 1300 130 670 or report it online at www.qhrc. qld.gov.au. #UniteAgainstRacism #StrongerTogether #WeAllBelong If you would like to support the Department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs' campaign to Unite Against Racism, visit: https://www.dlgrma.qld.gov.au//o/unite-against-racism.html to access the media toolkit.

01.01.2022 The Australian Human Rights Commission's Respect @ Work report released earlier this year stated: "As the 2018 National Survey revealed, almost two in five wom...en (39%) and just over one in four men (26%) have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace in the past five years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were more likely to have experienced workplace sexual harassment than people who are non-Indigenous (53% and 32% respectively). Sexual harassment is not a women’s issue: it is a societal issue, which every Australian, and every Australian workplace, can contribute to addressing. Workplace sexual harassment is not inevitable. It is not acceptable. It is preventable." Sexual harassment is prohibited by Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Act, and is unlawful anywhere it happens - but if you're at work, your employer is obligated to take steps to make sure your workplace is free of this type of behaviour. Sexual harassment doesn't have to be repeated to be against the law. You can find out more about what the law says about sexual harassment on our website at https://www.qhrc.qld.gov.au/your-rights/sexual-harassment, or read the full Respect @ Work report from AHRC at https://humanrights.gov.au//respectwork-sexual-harassment-.
