24.01.2022 Looking out to the learning studio from the dining space. The Lane Cove Council project is coming along. The children can connect during their dining experience. #ECFgroup #earlychildhoodfocussedgroup #interiorarchitecturaldesign #earlylearningdesign #educationaldesign #kindergartendesign #earlylearning #physicalenvironment #qualityarea3 #education

23.01.2022 The breakout space for the Lane Cove Council Project. When we designed the space, we wanted to ensure there was plenty of light and visual access to the natural world. #ECFgroup #earlychildhoodfocussedgroup #interiorarchitecturaldesign #earlylearningdesign #educationaldesign #kindergartendesign #earlylearning #physicalenvironment #qualityarea3 #education

23.01.2022 When I start the design process with a new client, the questions are what do we need to provide? How much space is legally required? What facilities do we have to have? When we have covered the standards, regulations and codes that are required, there is still the inevitable questions of Yes, but what else do we have to place in this learning room that requires 3.25sqm per child. What should we include? What should we buy? How do we resource our learning centre? Basically, w...hat makes a space a quality learning space? ‘Making Spaces Learning Spaces’ sounds like a simple enough idea. We have early learning settings, preschools, schools, universities, it should be just simple enough to look at the settings that we have and provide something similar that suits the desired aesthetic. We then add amazing educators and teachers and they provide a wonderful curriculum. However, if you happen to be one of those educators, teachers, leaders, educational practitioners then we know that this anything but simple. My work with educational physical environments and what makes a valuable learning space takes me to many disciplines from interior design and architecture for the built environment, to play and the curriculum, to values, beliefs and wellbeing, to occupational therapy and sensory awareness. In my research to define or explore typical learning spaces included in early childhood settings, I found that I always returned to the research of PLAY. There is an abundance of information available to the importance of play and its central position in how children learn but what determines the way and type of play that is introduced is not as easily defined. Learning spaces or learning settings refers to the physical setting in a learning environment so essentially a place in which teaching, and learning occur. In early childhood settings, the belief is children learn through play and as such our learning spaces are generally centred around the type of play that is happening. Physical, Social, Constructive, Imaginative (Fantasy) and Games with rules are types of play. We then tend to narrow it down further with the art, library, manipulative and puzzle spaces being some of the favourites in the interiors and sand play, water play, wheel play and mud kitchen in the natural environment. The areas or learning spaces are diverse and only limited by our imaginations. What are your must have learning spaces?

21.01.2022 We have been talking about the expectations of children in most of our workshops lately. In the last twenty five years, I have also noticed a considerable change in what society expects of our children. This has been said extremely well.

19.01.2022 The learning studio taking shape for Lane Cove Council. Loving the colour and style of the flooring. #ECFgroup #earlychildhoodfocussedgroup #interiorarchitecturaldesign #earlylearningdesign #educationaldesign #kindergartendesign #earlylearning #physicalenvironment #qualityarea3 #education

12.01.2022 The space between inside and out in an early learning environment is extremely important. We were so happy to see the builder’s take this on board and construct such an elegant transition. Children run, crawl, and play over this transition point. Pushing an emergency cot over this threshold during evacuation will be seamless with this design. #ECFgroup #earlychildhoodfocussedgroup #interiorarchitecturaldesign #earlylearningdesign #educationaldesign #kindergartendesign #earlylearning #physicalenvironment #qualityarea3 #education

10.01.2022 We have been talking lately about what makes a learning space? We would love to hear the thoughts of other educational practitioners! #ECFgroup # earlylearningeducation #thephysicalenvironment #qualityarea3... #playbasedlearning #education #makingspaceslearningplaces See more

09.01.2022 I love site visits; I see our designs being built and I can see how early learning practitioners will use the space to create engaging learning spaces. The construction team on this project has been amazing. #ECFgroup #earlychildhoodfocussedgroup #interiorarchitecturaldesign #earlylearningdesign #educationaldesign #kindergartendesign #earlylearning #physicalenvironment #qualityarea3 #education

07.01.2022 The art and craft joinery in one of the learning studio’s. By designing the cabinets to the ceiling we provided maximum storage but also clean lines during early learning operations. #ECFgroup #earlychildhoodfocussedgroup #interiorarchitecturaldesign #earlylearningdesign #educationaldesign #kindergartendesign #earlylearning #physicalenvironment #qualityarea3 #education

06.01.2022 Looking into the dining space and then into the kitchen from one of the Learning studio’s at the Lane Cove Council project. The use of glazing around the dining space allowed for light to filter through to the kitchen which was in the middle of the building. #ECFgroup #earlychildhoodfocussedgroup #interiorarchitecturaldesign #earlylearningdesign #educationaldesign #kindergartendesign #earlylearning #physicalenvironment #qualityarea3 #education

06.01.2022 Providing the ‘right’ learning environment for ‘every’ child should be our educational goal. No one way of learning is the right way, so why do we accept a system that says there is.
