24.01.2022 WE SPONSOR BIRDING RESEARCH Echidna Walkabout proudly sponsored the unique Mallacoota Birders Big Weekend this March. Have you heard about it? Mallacoota Birders Big Weekend is a special event created along with locals, with the purpose of understanding how Mallacoota's birdlife was impacted during the terrible bushfires of 2019-2020.... Through the registration fee and extra & generous donations, the event generated at least $1275 that has been donated to Birdlife Australia’s Bushfire Recovery campaign. We plan to continue to run this event over the Labour Day holiday each year and continue to help the birds of Mallacoota. During the long weekend, experienced birders search for birds and add data to help understand if endangered species are recovering. We might add a late November date this year, so if you are interested in being part of the birders group, read Janine's blog and register interest to keep informed. #birdwatch #bushfirerecovery
24.01.2022 WILDLIFE JOURNEY Snakes can be found all over Australia but it’s not that easy to see them. Their eyesight is not the best of their senses - they primarily work on smell and vibration - so during our walks, the noise/vibration of our steps pre-warn them that something is in the area and they will move away. We usually only see snakes when we are looking for them and when conditions are perfect. See our wildlife journey here: http://bit.ly/Wildlife_Journey... On our Wildlife Journey to East Gippsland, you can get the chance to encounter one, and if you do so, there is no need to fear. Your Guide will be as interested in them as in all wildlife and will look out for them and ensure you see them at a respectful and safe distance. #conservationtour #protectwildlife #snakes #wildlifejourney COVID-19: If you cannot travel due to Covid-19 restrictions we guarantee a FULL REFUND. 24.01.2022 The Laughing Kookaburra is a gorgeous bird, instantly recognisable in both plumage and voice. Not only one of Australia’s most iconic birds, but the Laughing Kookaburra also has a noisy territorial call that is one of the best known sounds of the Australian bush. It sounds like a variety of trills, chortles, belly laughs, and hoots. This famous call is most often heard at dawn and dusk, often given in response to neighbouring group, evidently to establish territory boundari...es. 22.01.2022 THE ULTIMATE COAST MOUNTAINS OUTBACK TOUR Platypus are mystical creatures with a 6th sense called electroreception that enables them to feel the presence of both their prey and their predators without touching or seeing them. To find them you must be still and quiet. See our conservation travel here: http://bit.ly/CoastMountainsOutback... They come and go as they please, often with no indication of where they have been except, maybe, a few ripples or a small stream of bubbles on the surface of the dark, clear waters they need to survive. They are shy and secretive. They don’t want to be found. Search for platypus on the first section of our Coast Mountains Outback tour series - canoeing is the quietest and best way to see them. 22.01.2022 The Singing Honeyeater is a small bird found in Australia. It lives in a wide range of shrubland, woodland, and coastal habitat. The bird's song ranges from scratchy to melodious - it also varies according to where they live. The song given mainly at dawn is described as pleasing, merry, melodious and musical, while their daytime calls are generally short and not song-like. On our new Island Birds & Whale Sharks conservation travel we will take notes of all birds seen and up...load the data to online atlasses for wildlife conservation purposes. 18.01.2022 COAST MOUNTAINS OUTBACK TOUR SERIES Aren’t cockatoos amazingly beautiful? On our Coast Mountains Outback tour series, you can see many of these magnificent birds. More cockatoos live in Australia than anywhere else in the world and the Grampians Range (Gariwerd) is one of the best places to see them. Read more here: https://buff.ly/3prMkNU... The varied habitats, combined with a steep decline in annual rainfall from south to north and an abundance of old trees with nesting hollows, mean that Gariwerd can support the needs and seasonal movements of half of Australia’s cockatoo species. On your next holidays, besides enjoying nature, you can help record all birds seen for conservation purposes. 16.01.2022 If you see a koala in a solitary tree in paddocks, miles away from a forest, don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong. It comes as a surprise to see a koala sitting in a big isolated paddock tree, far away from any suitable forest. But for koalas, walking across open country is not rare, even though most people rarely see it. A recent study found that koalas use those trees more than expected and that some of them seem to live in these scattered paddock trees - they are a normal p...art of some koalas’ home ranges. #koalafacts #koalarecovery https://buff.ly/36DaHlZ
14.01.2022 https://buff.ly/3pzvIoP Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours is the major supporter and donor of not for profit Koala Clancy Foundation - more than 50% of our profit goes into creating habitat for koalas. Research has shown that koalas are drawn to trees beside water on hot days and during droughts and due to climate change, we are experiencing more of these. ... Koalas do best in trees growing in fertile soils so the koala trees, funded by our tourists, are planted beside streams, rivers and waterholes, on the most fertile land possible. Help ensure wild koalas have a future. Consider coming to Australia next year and join us on a special Koala Tree Planting and recovery experience, near Melbourne, or in Gippsland. #koalarecovery #helpkoalas

13.01.2022 https://buff.ly/2LCKjfs Hello human friends! Did you know our fur tells a lot about us? Look at this picture of me, Wongerrer, and my joey our fur looks squeaky clean and healthy, doesn’t it? A healthy koala has beautiful fur!... The place where we live says a lot about our fur as well. One of my friends from Queensland has very light grey, short fur because where he lives is hotter all year round, so it is better for him to be smaller and have shorter fur. #koalarecovery #savekoalas
12.01.2022 OUTBACK CONSERVATION JOURNEY Over many years Echidna Walkabout’s wildlife monitoring efforts have enabled a number of scientific projects to gather important long term insights into the conservation status of wildlife in the regions that we travel to. See our tour here: http://bit.ly/AG_Mungo... Our special 6-day conservation journey to the magical Mungo Outback, in partnership with Australian Geographic, departures this April. During each day, you will help record all the species of birds, reptiles, mammals and other wildlife we encounter. At the end of the tour, the recorded sightings are uploaded on ID lists that will enable scientists to determine the movements and conservation status of species over time and help with ongoing conservation efforts. We can give you access to some of these lists after the tour if you wish OR you may like to create and share your own lists! Have a share in this action. 08.01.2022 Have you ever heard the calls of koalas? Watch the video and pay attention. They are loud pig-like grunting snores, mostly uttered by males - they vocalise partly to avoid conflicts with other males. Those calls give other males information on the whereabouts of the caller, his size and fitness. ... They don’t want to fight, certainly not against males who might hurt them, so they listen to the calls, respond and avoid bumping into each other. Those calls are also mating calls, intended to attract females. Koalas are amazing creatures, aren’t they? Read more interesting facts about them on our website. #koalarecovery #koalafacts https://buff.ly/2H3eBub
08.01.2022 Great news! Australia has won Lonely Planet's Best In Travel 2021 for Community Restoration after our terrible bushfires. 05.01.2022 https://buff.ly/3pzvIoP While our tourists were watching wildlife, we were planting a tree for koalas. Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours runs a range of popular wildlife tours for small groups of international and local travellers, and all our tours contribute financially to wildlife.... In 2020, our not for profit Koala Clancy Foundation used that funding to plant 9000 trees for koalas, and 2021 is shaping up to be our best year ever we already have 40,000 trees to plant. We will need as many helpers as we can get. Thank you to all our international and local visitors who supported this initiative by taking a tour in 2019, and all the years since 1993. #koalarecovery #protectingkoalas

01.01.2022 To all our followers, we regret to advise that the Facebook lockdown in Australia has stopped most if not all, of our ability to share our tours and events with you.
