17.01.2022 Moisture has arrived and there’s so much to celebrate. Over the last 18 days 157mm has gently fallen here at Echo Valley. Every drop has been held in the landscape . We have new seeds germinating (we planted 2.5 ha to diverse covers just before this rain event) and they’re looking very happy. Here’s to the muddy mess, the boggy best, and all of the challenges that black soil brings. It’s makes the soul sing to lug buckets through mud to feed pigs and collect eggs and watch the bugs bounce from flower to stem. Moisture is the catalyst that all life relies on. 14.01.2022 Here’s a short video showing how we work with the impact of our pastured poultry. We adjust our expectations, minimise negative impact and look out for opportunities. These spots are our whale fall... what??? When a whale dies and falls to the sea floor that’s not the end of the story. The nutrient left behind as the whale carcass decomposes feeds and nourishes thousands of other lives building entire new ecosystems. So too does the nutrient spots left behind when we move our chicken trailers. This hot spot is like a nutrient bank releasing soil food across the landscape as we move. It will feed the soil, build microbial life and grow more plants. She’s a magical mystery is Mother Nature with her ever changing complex adaptive systems. Love our soil
