20.01.2022 In the last week we have seen possibly the greatest ever over reaction of any government. The truth of the matter is that border communities, and now travelling... Victorian residents, have been treated with contempt. Nothing more highlights this than New Years Eve. Thousands of Victorians fled Moama to avoid quarantine, most waiting up to 7 hours to cross the border. Around midnight on NYE the police gave up and waived everyone of the waiting motorists through the border without being checked. The government has rushed to get thousands of people back into Victoria where the COVID numbers are the highest and where they are more likely to contract it, rather than staying put on holidays To rub salt into the wounds of Victorians who visited NSW, it is now policy that the NSW residents from the same border communities can travel freely across Victoria, while Victorians who have come from the same area must isolate in their homes for 14 days, irrespective of a positive or negative result. This is extreme madness. Then there are the even more unfortunate Victorians who are now stranded in NSW and left to fend for themselves. This is not Europe where our residents are returning from another country or a war torn area. These are fellow Australians crossing a line on a map, or a river with a bridge. The police called in for border protection are staying in Bendigo and receiving 5 hours overtime per day to travel to Echuca and staying in a town 100klms away. The same police are earning close to $10,000 per fortnight to check licences. Surely these police could be staying in the motels, hotels and holiday accommodation 500 metres away from the border checkpoint? Our business manages 25 short term rentals, six of which are on the wrong side of the river. The cancellations we have processed in the last four days are close to $70,000. The summer trading period produces 25% of both our businesses annual income, and the income for our home owners, all of whom live in Melbourne. This Summer period was much anticipated and is now no longer. Mortgages maybe defaulted and the mental health of those affected is significant. The ripple effect is huge for every business, Echuca included. Although accommodation in Echuca is unaffected, every retail outlet in Echuca is trading at standard levels as the thousands of Moama based tourists who visited Echuca daily have disappeared. Moama is now a ghost town, reminiscent of the hard lockdown’s months ago. Sadly, the Victorian government is unlikely to offer assistance to the NSW border towns so heavily affected, and If they do it will not touch the sides of the losses, or keeping our businesses open. I think it is accurate to say that every NSW border resident from Yarrawonga west to the SA border is effectively Victorian, and we consider ourselves Victorian. We shop in Victoria, travel daily to Victoria and spend 90% of our income in Victoria. If the cross border commissioner is campaigning on our behalf, it is falling on deaf ears and is invisible to the communities affected. Victoria must stop making blanket decisions. The input of our local representatives must be acted on and respected. See more

Airbnb are only refunding the owner's portion and keeping the service fee guests pay (17-20% ) as a travel voucher. As local managers in an area that is not affected, we feel it is unfair that Airbnb have released a policy that affects us the same as it does other greatly affected, unreach...able, areas overseas. Once we are through this, PLEASE #bookdirect with local tourism operators and help us to stop sending your $ overseas to colossal booking sites. It's probably time we think about boycotting overseas sites, however unfortunately for most of us, their market saturation means we have no option but to list with them. At this stage, we are unable to take any holiday/leisure bookings for arrival before 1 December 2020. The government's very vague exit plan means we have no definitive date as to when we will be allowed to travel within the state. ... All bookings made within this period and booked prior to today are entitled to a full refund. Please contact our office if you need to arrange a cancellation. Once a date has been announced that regional and/or metro Melbourne residents can travel for any reason, we encourage you to book directly with us rather than at OTA - this means you are dealing with the local property managers directly and also not spending your money with an international company. Our calendars will remain open for anyone needing to book accommodation for work, long term or other allowed reasons. Any cancellations of bookings made from today for arrival before 1 December 2020 will incur cancellation fees.

With this is mind, Echuca Holiday Homes has made the tough decision to stop trading today. Our customers are staying home and we agree. ... We are putting the health of our staff, families and customers first, and as such will be closing our business until further notice. We will still be operating online and on the phones and encourage travellers to book in holidays for later in the year.
