17.01.2022 These children are being encouraged to Make Their Mark! Mark making is much more than just a scribble! Babies and toddlers learn and begin to make sense of the world through mark making. It is the beginning of a childs journey towards writing and is an important step in a childs development for handwriting, creativity and coordination. They realise that they can control their marks and their creativity starts to thrive. Early Years Framework Outcome 5: children are effective communicators

17.01.2022 Anger is so often a mask for another emotion! Its important to look beneath just what we see.
16.01.2022 Helping a little one learn to communicate so much more than "teaching him to talk". Watching, imitating, gesturing, taking turns, sharing smiles... are ALL communication skills.

13.01.2022 Too often, I see children reprimanded when they're not able to control their behaviours and emotions. They’re expected to remain calm and happy, not get upset, ...not display anger, and quickly calm themselves down if they do get angry or upset. If they can’t do this, they may be referred to me for "self-regulation difficulties". Here's the thing. Self-regulation is a developmental process. Just as we wouldn’t expect a child to run before they can walk, we cannot expect children to self-regulate until they’ve experienced co-regulation time and time again. And unless a child has had it modelled enough, and their brain has developed enough, they will not achieve regulation on their own. Have a think - when was the last time you heard a 3 year old say I’m so angry my sister hit me! I need to calm down. I’m just going to take myself to the kitchen for a drink of water and do some deep breaths. Co-regulation begins from birth. When babies are unsettled and we cuddle them, rock them, feed them - we are helping them to regulate. When toddlers are angry that they can't have the toy they want, and we empathise with them, sit with them, get them a drink - we are helping them to regulate. When preschoolers are upset because they're not ready to leave their playdate, and we listen and help them take deep breaths - we are helping them to regulate. Self-regulation only BEGINS to emerge around 4-5 years. And whilst some 4-5 year olds may be able to regulate themselves, others may not be able to. Both are within the typical range of development. True self-regulation is not fully established until our mid-twenties. Even then, we often turn to others to help us feel better when we are feeling low. And we are often quite happy to help other adults feel better when they're feeling low, however when children need our help, we may be reluctant to give it, perhaps in fear that we will stunt their emotional resilience (amongst many other understandable but unfounded fears). When we ask a child to regulate themselves before they're ready, we risk shaming them, affecting their self-esteem, and affecting their relationship with us. Co-regulation needs to come first. You may not be able to help your child regulate 100% of the time, and that’s okay. Just know that they may not be ready to do it themselves.

05.01.2022 Being a parent is the most important job you can do in your life. It also lasts a lifetime. It helps to ignore the common myths! Myths VS Facts from the Raisin...g Children Network!! MYTH: 'I should know all the answers' FACT: You don't have to know everything! No parent has all the answers. There is no such thing as one 'right way' or 'one-style-fits-all' parenting. Parents need to understand and be able to respond to the unique personalities, strengths and vulnerabilities of each child. Have reasonable expectations of yourself. Have confidence in what you do know. It's OK to say 'I don't know'. *It's OK to ask for help.* If you have any concerns, or need some guidance or reassurance, why not drop in to our FREE baby! Child and parenting clinic on Wednesday between 10am & 1pm

02.01.2022 You know whats better than saying "this food is good for you"? Tell them what foods do in their body! Why do I keep sharing this message? Because we keep selli...ng our kids short labeling foods and good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Here are some examples of messages I like for different ages: For 2-3yo kids I usually break it down by color. Although its not 100% accurate, its a good framework to get started. Red: gives you a strong heart Orange: helps you see in the dark Yellow: helps your body heal cuts Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain White: gives you energy For 4s and 5s you can start being more specific - like carrots and sweet potatoes help you be able to see in the dark. Clementines help your skin heal cuts. Broccoli helps your night vision, your skin heal, AND your bones be strong. For 4s/5s and 6s you can introduce the idea that some foods do a lot of things in their bodies and some foods do a few things. For 6s and 7s you can introduce the concept of vitamins and minerals - tell them HOW carrots protect their night vision (via vitamin A). Learn about the body. For 8s and 9s - learn even more about different things in foods. And so on. All the while, model the way you want your kids to eat in your home and serve them the balanced diet you want them to eat. Thats more powerful than anything you could ever tell them. If you need help getting your child to try new foods, my free child eating guide From Stress to Success - 4 Ways to Help Your Child Eat Better without Losing Your Mind is in my bio @kids.eat.in.color #kidseatincolor See more
