24.01.2022 I’m hosting the Edible Flowers class here this afternoon. It’s not the usual high tea, but an opportunity to explore the growing and nurturing of edible flowers in the garden. Afternoon tea includes some of these delicious Torch Ginger fresh spring rolls. If you grow Torch Ginger you really just use those tiny inner petals in delectable dishes before the flower dies. They are floral, gingery and crisp. More classes on edible flowers next year, but in the meantime check the Ecobotanica website for the current list

21.01.2022 These are the stems of the stunning Lipstick Palm. They need a very warm and humid area for successful growth, so our garden in Capalaba in the subtropics doesn’t cut the mustard. But, it was so nice to see them in all their glory at Port Douglas this week.

18.01.2022 A concentration of some of our garden in a punnet of edible flowers. I just love picking and packing each punnet. It gives me the chance to meditate on the season, what to plant next, how each species is coping wth heat/rain etc and it gives me the desire to put in more flowers than ever before. And like people, no one collection is the same as another. You’ve got to admire the glories of Mother Nature.

16.01.2022 There’s something or should I say many things, so rewarding and energising about working with children. Today was a Bush Tucker Garden class. Today was the first of two consecutive Sunday workshops at Morningside State School. Before everyone arrived I set up tables, plants, potting mix and lots more. ... We started, with a wonderful damper made by one of the families plus some of our home grown jams that I made. Rosella with strawberry and carambola, and Davidson’s Plum with star anise and lime. Both with Bush foods and both voted delicious by everyone. That was washed down with some Lemon Myrtle Cordial. Made last night from the lemon Myrtle tree in our garden. The recipe is on the Ecobotanica.com.au website for you. Feeling full and happy, we went on to discover and propagate lots of bush food plants. I’m hoping they grow strong and healthy to populate gardens in the area and introduce people to the range of foods that our indigenous peoples enjoyed for thousands of years before white fellas arrived. #Bushtucker #Bushfood #Nativeingredients #Morningsidestateschool #Ecobotanicaclasses

14.01.2022 So with the garden awash, I decided to grab some flowers and press them instead of worrying about everything washing away. Several books and timber flower presses later and there are dozens being tenderly squashed between tissues and paper. It’s all in the cause of a kids workshop coming up soon -April 6 in fact, at Sunnybank Hills Library. 03.01.2022 Once upon a time, when living in Ballarat, I could only dream of growing my own bananas. We had plums and apricots, gooseberries and other cane berries. But it’s always what you don’t have that you want the most isn’t it? A bit over thirty years ago we moved to Qld with work. What a joy it’s been to live here. Bananas and pineapples, jackfruit and rose apples, star fruit and achachar, limes and lemons, tropical apples, mangoes and mulberries, and dozens of other tropical f...ruits grow in our garden. This year though, I’ve been particularly hankering after the stone fruit again. So I’ve planted low chill plums and nectarines and another fig. All have been espaliered against wires and training has begun. I’m hoping that a couple of years will give us bountiful harvests of those to add to our home harvest calendar.
