25.01.2022 Armored eyes of the whale shark (new paper out) This report elaborates on adaptations of the eyes of the whale shark Rhincodon typus (Elasmobranchii, Rhincodontidae), including the discovery that they are covered with dermal denticles, which is a novel mechanism of eye protection in vertebrates. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file

20.01.2022 Another Dunsborough whale shark sighting - thanks for sharing Tris and Anita :) We've had a few sightings from down there now - and we've even satellite tracked whale sharks as far south as Perth. 09.01.2022 pretty cool! :)

09.01.2022 Apart from being a unique experience and so much fun, joining one of our whaleshark tours gives you the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing research about ...these endangered animals. Each day we liaise with scientists sending them the data we collect about the sharks we swam with: their sex and length, and an ID photo of the pattern of their spots, which is unique like fingerprints in humans! Marine Conservationist Brad Norman has been carrying out research on the Ningaloo for many years, nominating this species for full protection in Australian waters in 2001 and producing reports such as the Best Practice Whale Shark Ecotourism manual. His not-for-profit organisation ECOCEAN, in collaboration with Murdoch University and The University of Queensland, keeps monitoring whale shark numbers and in this period they are deploying behavioural data-logging tags (called Daily Diaries) which will help better understand the sharks’ behaviour. Yesterday our customers had some great swims with Stumpy, the very first shark to be recorded in the global whale shark photo identification database (Wildbook) - number A-001 - and also the first shark Brad Norman ever swam with when he began his research in 1995! Join our tours to swimming with our local celebrities and contribute to marine conservation while learning and having fun! Photos by Chiara Bussini [Thanks Ecocean Whale Shark Research and Conservation for the ongoing efforts to better understand and protect our spotty friends!]
