16.01.2022 The two floating islands in Lake Douglas had the netting removed this afternoon, so are now available for water birds to use for safe nesting away from the thre...at of dogs. The process took a while and Paul Reed from the City of South Perth was present to check on progress. The netting over the two islands was necessary to prevent the young plants being uprooted by swamp hens. Contractors towed the islands to the shore using a kayak, then removed the netting and weeds. Each holds three raised platforms on which birds could nest out of the water. As a trial, one of the islands has also been fitted with ramps adjacent to the platforms to help bird access. Each island is loosely anchored in place. Within minutes a swamp hen was checking one out, and a black swan took close interest in the whole process. See more

The City of South Perth has installed two new floating islands at Lake D...ouglas to provide a safe nesting ground for swans and other birds. The man-made islands will provide birds with a refuge from predators and, as the rushes grow under them, will also serve as a filtration system to improve the quality of water in the lake. The city said Lake Douglas has been identified as a suitable breeding ground for swans which is why it installed the floating rafts.
