25.01.2022 Did you know that dragonflies are carnivorous? Baby dragonflies (dragonfly nymphs) use their fast, extendable jaws to catch unsuspecting prey. They eat tadpoles..., fish, and other waterbugs including each other! Find out what dragonflies eat as adults as well as more interesting things about dragonflies on our ECO Education Service website ecoeducationservice.org.au//dragonflies-and-aquatic-insects

25.01.2022 During the warmer months, horseshoe crabs emerge from the sea to spawn. Waiting for them are teams of lab workers, who capture the horseshoe crabs by the hundreds of thousands, take them to labs, harvest their blood, then return them to the sea. Here's why:

23.01.2022 Did you know that approximately 2 per cent of the Earths water occurs as groundwater, compared with 0.1 per cent as rivers and lakes? And yet in Australia over... 30 per cent of our total water consumption comes from groundwater. For Groundwater Awareness Week we've put together a short article about the water cycle on our website #GWAW http://ecoeducationservice.org.au/water-cycles/ #GWAW #Landcare National Landcare Program

18.01.2022 BUTTERFLY FLUTTERS FOR CITIZEN SCIENTISTS Knowledge of the population distribution of the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia) is about to be improved with a new citizen science project in south east Queensland. ECOllaboration Ltds Chief Executive Officer, Cerran Fawns, said We have had many unofficial reports of sightings since our last survey ten years ago and we need to update records for the last five years.... The butterfly is listed as vulnerable and is an important species that has been severely impacted by habitat loss and the introduced vine, the Dutchmans Pipe (Aristolochia elegans), which is poisonous to the butterfly larvae. The native birdwing butterfly vine, Pararistolochia praevenosa, is what the larvae feed on in the wild, however it looks so similar to the Dutchmans Pipe, the adult females get confused and lay eggs on the introduced vine which are a death trap for the emergent larvae. The native birdwing butterfly vine has been planted widely throughout the region over the last ten years and we are wanting to determine if the populations have spread from the isolated pockets of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast areas. Ms Fawns added, The males are easily recognisable being black and iridescent green with the females less striking with brown, yellow and white markings. The data collected from the community sightings will be uploaded to the Living Atlas of Australia which gives a generalised map of the distribution and the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Network. To report sightings over the last five years and to view photos of the butterfly, vines and larvae, go to http://ecoeducationservice.org.au/richmondbirdwingbutterfly/. A report from can also be downloaded and mailed to ECOllaboration, PO Box 311, Nambour Qld 4560 or phoned in on 07 54764777. This project is supported by ECOllaboration Ltd, through funding from the Australian Governments National Landcare Program. National Landcare Program #Landcare

16.01.2022 Edgy Veg fun fact for the school holidays: Plants living near water act like eyelashes. Join us for the Sunshine Coast Council Kids In Action Environmental Pro...jects series. Janine and Marcelo give us the low-down on why it is so very important to maintain the right native vegetation beside water. As shallow pools dry out, the deeper areas are critical as a holding zone to maintain the lives of our aquatic friends. Native plants protect from further evaporation through providing shade, they filter out pollutants and their roots slow the soil from entering the water and filling up the holding zones. So now we know:) Check it out here: https://tinyurl.com/yxwbn3bo Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council, the awesome KIA team and our Skilling Queenslanders for Work Trainees. #environmentlevyfunding #quotapark #Sunshinecoastcouncil #Kidsinaction2020 #riparian #edgyveg #landcare #citizenscience #catchmentcare #aquaticfriends #scienceeducation

09.01.2022 Did you know that plants grow in communities? Factors such as soil type, availability of water, elevation and wind play to the strengths of certain plants and not others. That's why you won't find succulents in a rainforest. Or ferns on a coastal dune. Year 12 Biology students at St Theresa's Catholic College spent two days with us exploring the different plant communities of sclerophyll, rain forest, heath, and coastal dunes, as well as water quality and its relationship wit...h vegetation. These field trips were proudly supported by Unitywater and Seqwater #STCC

07.01.2022 Happy 30th Birthday Maroochy Wetland Sanctuary Congratulations to the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary Support Group and Sunshine Coast, Queensland for taking good... care of this wonderful local asset. Here's to you serving our Sunny Coast community with your goodness for many generations to come

07.01.2022 We had a great day out with a very engaged group of Year 10 students from St Teresa's Catholic College, focusing on how dunes allow for other plant communities to exist behind them. The students completed transect lines and quadrat surveys of the dunes, foredune and heath. We also covered some plant identification and information about fire ecology in our half day session.

06.01.2022 Our annual frog survey is starting at the end of this month. Last year our vollies found the endangered Cascade Tree Frog (Litoria pearsoniana). What will you ...find? We monitor at various locations across the Sunshine Coast from January-March. We normally monitor on weekday evenings between 6:30-8:00pm. All equipment is provided and this is a family friendly activity. Monitoring is co-ordinated by an environmental scientist and volunteers are involved in identifying frogs through sightings and calls. No experience is needed! Register your volunteer interest to join us: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/65V9YTK This program is proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council's Environment Levy Partnership.
