24.01.2022 We've just received a NatHERS report for our project in Marysville which reached 8.3 stars rating . We are so proud! HOWEVER, the NatHERS is calculated in software offering only a limited list of items. Even the best available option reaches only 50% performance of what the house will reach. For example, we are sure that the correct premium windows alone would kick us to 9 stars. Our result is great anyway, but we feel it's essential to know the downsides of this metric. If you want to know more, read the thorough explanation here: https://ecokit.com.au/what-is-a-six-star-energy-rating-and/

24.01.2022 HOMES WE // Barn House Eelde by Kwint Architects + Aat Vos The task of conceiving a private home in the countryside south of Eelde raises the question as to how far the existing typology is suitable, without resorting to historicising architecture. This local typology is strongly determined by the simple Drenthe barn: straightforward, at a right angle to the road axis, centred in the countryside, without a privacy layer, functional, a single construction layer with roof. Far...ms fitting this description have already existed for centuries. Due to the departure of farmers from the countryside and the arrival of urban dwellers with a desire for space, many old farms are being used as and reconverted into residential farms, without altering this typology. However, at the moment that the need for replacement development arises for this new function, the question comes up whether or not a private home can be conceived within this traditional description by incorporating modern-day demands with comfort, privacy, and a subtle transition from exterior to interior.

21.01.2022 HOMES WE // X-Lam passive house by estudoquarto The lot has a topography binding because of the altitude difference from the entrance fee at the border towards the valley , more than four meters in depression. The idea of the project is in full harmony with the client , was to not intervene in a massive field , restricting their movements , avoiding as much as possible the use of reinforced concrete. Looking at the exposure of the lot and its slopes rise to the possibility... of developing the building in length , on one floor, which unfolds in three sections differently inclined respectful of the existing shares of the land. Architecture " single level " that is placed and winds seeming lying on the lawn from where you pick up visually through a profile in oxidized iron , in order to obtain an architecture that is a veritable compendium of the landscape and not a forced insertion. The choice of construction makes the building project fits in the silent landscape context . The idea of detachment from the soil has allowed us to implement a package strongly draining to ground level through a stratification that allows to optimize the insulation of avoiding heat losses and simultaneously to drain the rainwater infiltration and avoid ascents humidity . Save this picture!

20.01.2022 HOMES WE // The Barn House by Paul Uhlmann Architects This residence was designed to be a rural weekend getaway for reoccurring clients; a busy city couple and their children. An existing driveway meanders through the property, flanked by sprawling jacarandas that lead to the building. This idea of ‘The Barn’ was embraced in both external form and the interior spaces, as the building was intended to be an escape for the family to go and enjoy their horses. The ground floor plan completely opens to engage with the sprawling lawn and grounds of the property. This enables cross-ventilation, and the ability of the family’s young children and their friends to come and go as they please. Cathedral-like ceilings and windows are encapsulated by exposed structural timbers to frame views to the paddocks and bushland below.

19.01.2022 Just a quick reminder that summer in Australia can be harsh and poor housing standards are a culprit for turning AC on with temperatures only reaching 25C. Is that bad? Well, the energy consumption is rising twice as fast as in 2010. What can we do about it? Read more in our new article: https://ecokit.com.au/how-does-your-home-deal-with-soaring/

10.01.2022 HOMES WE // Kellet Street House by C.Kairouz Architects A 3 level, 4 bedrooms, modern Melbourne home full of angles and light. This abode was designed to encourage bright & uncluttered spaces redefining family living. Clever shapes & restraint create a sense of calm and comfort that flows from beginning to end. The project brief was to deliver the ‘perfect modern home for a young family’ who cares about the quality of their home environment, how it makes them feel, and is seeking an inner-city locale, which is close to amenities and parks. This project was an investment opportunity for the client, which allowed them to flex their building knowledge and skills while working alongside the C.Kairouz design practice. The client wanted a light, airy, and sophisticated house while catering to all the functions of family life.

10.01.2022 HOMES WE // Groba House by Estúdio MRGB Two distinct volumes that dialogue with the characteristic Brasília flatlands - this was the general concept adopted in Casa Groba’s project. This general scheme presents itself in the landscape through the following hierarchy. The main pavilion, whose geometry disrupts with the conventional residential morphology, invites the spectator to overleap public and private domains, differentiated, here, only by a glazed plane. Inside its domains are placed, essentially, the gathering spaced of the housing program, creating a gradation to the more intimate spaces- the secondary block.

07.01.2022 Our team is so experienced in video calls not due to the lockdown, but because some of us work from Melbourne, some from Perth, others from the USA and the rest is in the middle of Europe Running such a global team pose a great challenge, but we keep laser-focused on our mission: 4 ( I haven't told them that I am taking the screenshot, so it's 100% natural!)

06.01.2022 HOMES WE // Cuckoo’s Nest by BetweenSpaces Nest is built on a corner plot measuring 45’x75’ with roads on the western and northern edge in a gated layout and surrounded by a silver oak tree and some palm trees. The brief was to design a house that is simple, pragmatic and modern for ageing parents of the owners, the owners themselves and their two sons. The entire narrative of this house is constructed around the idea of playfulness and pragmatism. The name Cuckoo’s Nest, a...lludes more to the playful imagery of Cuckoo’s clock. The proposed design interprets the typical layering in south Indian temple complex, where the inner sanctum is surrounded by layers of pillared verandahs and the outermost layer of tall fence. This layering helps in gradually taking people from the chaotic outdoors to the serene and quiet indoors in a sequential manner. #architecture #barn #modernbarn #cabin #cabinporn #cabinlife #diy #energyefficient #forestviews #healthyhome #kitofparts #offthegrid #tinyhouse #notsotiny #homeswelove #ecokitloves

06.01.2022 HOMES WE // The Island House by 2by4-Architects On an island of 5 by 100 meters in the Dutch lake area 'Loosdrechtse Plas' 2by4-architects designed a unique recreational house. The house is a subtle frame that captures the view from the inside out and outside in. Completely anticipating on the client's needs 2by4 has designed the house in such a way that it can customize the interaction with the surrounding nature. One of the glass facades can be completely opened so that th...e wooden outdoor terrace becomes part of the interior. To even more lift the inside-outside barrier the dark wooden facade can be folded open, creating a panoramic view to nature. The folded facade becomes an abstract perpendicular element that floats above the water. By opening this part of the facade the wooden floor of the living area is now directly connected to the water enabling the inhabitants to access the lake from the living room. See more

05.01.2022 HOMES WE // Field House by Lookofsky Architecture The Field House consists of a series of small units that each contain their own function: a bedroom unit, a unit for communal space, and a reading room unit. The cluster of small volumes is a contemporary interpretation of a local settlement typology traditionally seen in old fishing villages and small farmhouses on the island of Fårö. As the needs of the owner or future generations evolve, new units can be added to the structure in sequence, creating overlapping spaces inside- and out. #architecture #barn #modernbarn #cabin #cabinporn #cabinlife #diy #energyefficient #forestviews #healthyhome #kitofparts #offthegrid #tinyhouse #notsotiny #homeswelove #ecokitloves

05.01.2022 HOMES WE // Precious Talk House by JNDA Until a single house is built, there is a lot of dialogue and communication between the architect and the client. This is why the name of this project is ‘Precious talk’. #architecture #barn #modernbarn #cabin #cabinporn #cabinlife #diy #energyefficient #forestviews #healthyhome #kitofparts #offthegrid #tinyhouse #notsotiny #homeswelove #ecokitloves

01.01.2022 HOMES WE // Kleines House by Lukas Lenherr Architektur In the middle of Jonschwil in Alttoggenburg, Switzerland, a typical old storage house was constructively secured. Three superimposed rooms with sanitary cells were installed one above the other, opening up a spiraling and vertically upward living space through all three floors. On the square floor plan of 6x6 meters emerges now a "small house" with not quite 99 square meters of living space. The openings in the interior... connect the rooms, large windows create connections to the nearby surroundings and perspectives emerge. The spatial circumstances remind of Japanese room constellations. The house has no corridors but consists of a sequence of rooms. They can be experienced in different sequences and as well by sitting on horizontal nets. All materials are clearly reduced and natural. The contrasts and cracks of the materials meet each other without lamination. Often, the materials are unconventionally used and the traces of work are part of the atmosphere. The house has no cellar because of the groundwater and the technical equipment is tiny that it can be found in a closet in the washroom. Small also means a little volume to heat. Thick insulation of wood fibre and sheep's wool protects the house. The wood stove in the middle floor can get suppored by the floor heating. The weather will reflect over the years on the wooden façade.
