25.01.2022 Wurdi Youang Have you heard of the Wurdi Youang? This stone structure located in Wathaurong country, is older than stone hedge or the Egyptian pyramids and is known as the world’s first observatory. This structure is over 10,000 years old, and helps provide information to the moon cycles, the winter and the summer equinox. #NAIDOC2020 #IndigenousScience #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe... Virtual Tour Ecolinc is located on Wadawurrung land. This year you can take a virtual tour of some culturally significant sites to celebrate NAIDOC week. Did you learn something new? #NAIDOC2020 #IndigenousScience #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe Budj Bim eel traps In 2019, the Gunditjamara people were finally able to get the Budj Bum eel traps to be World Heritage Listed. This site is the first to be listed solely for its Aboriginal cultural significance. The Bumj Bum eel traps are 6,600 years old, and a sophisticated aquaculture system which allows the sustainable and efficient hunting of eels in this area. Budj Bum provides evidence of intelligent engineering, farming and sustainable practices existing in Australia for thousands of years. https://wec2019.org.au//budj-bim-6000-year-old-aboriginal/ #NAIDOC2020 #IndigenousScience #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

14.01.2022 Did you know Indigenous people have been practising science for thousands of years? Join Tidda Tash as she demonstrates the many ways indigenous people used biology chemistry and physics to learn about the land on which they lived and how this knowledge has been passed on. Hear how we can also use this knowledge in modern day science and how much we still have to learn about sustainability and looking after our environment. Go to our webpage for booking details for term 4

14.01.2022 This is a very disturbing report but unfortunately many people who are interested in VVP grasslands wont be surprised. The question is where to from now?

11.01.2022 Its Threatened Species Day a day for us to reflect on our species at risk of extinction and to consider what we need to do to protect our unique plants and a...nimals into the future. Thats why Im really pleased that, on this day, the Australian Government has announced its commitment to develop a new ten-year Threatened Species Strategy to protect Australias threatened species. Our native species face significant challenges with many threats working together to drive decline, including invasive pests and weeds, habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as climate change and disasters, such as the 2019-20 bushfires. The new Strategy will deliver practical on-ground action and the development of new tools and technologies to help address these pressures and build the resilience of our threatened species. The new Strategy will build on the model of the current Strategy. The Strategy will include a ten-year vision to 2030 and it will be underpinned by five-year Action Plans which will establish targets, steps and timelines. Launched in 2015, the current Strategy was Australias first nationwide Threatened Species Strategy. It was new, bold and ambitious. It included explicit and measurable targets to tackle feral cats, improve recovery practices and improve the trajectories of 20 mammals, 20 birds and 30 plants by 2020 (you can read more about how were tracking against those targets here: https://www.environment.gov.au//threatened-species-strateg). The targets in the current Strategy conclude this year, and my team is working on a final report which will present a robust and evidence-based analysis of progress against these targets. Threatened Species Day is also about reflecting on collective efforts around Australia to help protect and recover our threatened species, including by conservation organisations, researchers and the community right across Australia to help protect our precious native wildlife. The resilience, dedication and expertise of these groups and individuals is remarkable. The development of the new Strategy will be informed by consultation with individuals and organisations across the country. Starting in October, I look forward to hearing about what you would like to see in a new Threatened Species Strategy. 10.01.2022 Once upon a time, on a humble blackthorn shrub in central NSW, a colony of ants carefully looked after a butterflys babies. They protected the little butterfly... larvae in their ant nests during the day and every night took them to the plant to feed safely in the dark. Sounds like the beginning of an animated kids movie, but this actually happens! The Bathurst Copper Butterfly has a complex and mutually beneficial relationship with its attendant ant species, where the ants care for the butterflys offspring in return for access to a sugary dew that is secreted from the larvaes backs. The Bathurst Copper Butterfly is one of Australias rarest butterflies and is currently featured in Australia Posts Wildlife Recovery stamp series because a significant portion of its known range was impacted by last summers devastating bushfires. Its a fascinating species you can learn more about by clicking the link below. In the meantime, keep an eye out for these iridescent flutterers near blackthorn bushes if you live in the NSW Central Tablelands, or stuck to an envelope if you live somewhere else! https://australiapostcollectables.com.au//wildlife-recover

04.01.2022 Did you know that the use of opera house nets has been banned in all Victorian waters, public and private, since 1 July 2019? They were banned as they can cause... the drowning of air-breathing wildlife, such as native water rats (rakali), platypus and turtles. Unfortunately, two nets were found a few days ago by Bruce Boddington of NatureWest at Doherty's Drain, at Leakes Road, in Tarneit. Help us to keep these traps out of Melbourne's waterways by report illegal fishing activities to the Victorian Fisheries Authority on 133 474.
