25.01.2022 The recent massive firestorms that incinerated much of Australia’s vegetation have left devastating impacts on our native flora and fauna. The animals most likely to survive the recent firestorms have adaptations that help them cope with fires better than other animals. We may think these fires are unprecedented, and in our experience, they are, but the fossil record tells us they’ve happened time and again. In the past, the only species left on earth had certain characteristics which allowed them to survive, but even then, survival was not guaranteed: Dr. Matt McDowell explaining bushfires as past and present drivers of extinction, in this month's DEEP Thought! https://www.deep-group.com//bushfires-as-drivers-of-extinc

24.01.2022 ‘Happy New Year’ sounds a bit strained clocking into 2020. Our massive country is on fire. Billions of animals (not just vertebrates) have suffered. People have lost their homes and their lives. However, the outpouring of emotional and financial support for those battling the fires and those affected by the fires, from within and outside of Australia, gives us a shard of hope. Hope that good people working together can reduce impacts from climate change. Let’s not forget the severity of these January days over the coming year.

24.01.2022 Now that we are one month ‘deep’ into 2020, we'd like to welcome three post-docs and one honours student to our group! Their projects fit nicely with the broader research aims of DEEP, with a strong emphasis on mathematical modelling to understand past extinction events and predict future biodiversity changes. Head to our website to take a closer look at the talents and interests of our new researchers! https://www.deep-group.com ARC Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage UTAS School of Biological Sciences

21.01.2022 Congratulations to our Feb 2019 honours cohort for graduating yesterday! Check out a summary of their awesome projects on our website: https://www.deep-group.com//feb-2019-honours-cohort-gradua

16.01.2022 The devastating Australian #bushfires have left many of us feeling helpless. Here’s something we can do all the time to assist our wildlife: RESPONSIBLE WILDLIFE PROVISIONING. Our first DEEP thought blog post for 2020 is by Dr. Rebecca Wheatley! Small efforts from many people can make a big difference. Have a read to find out how you can help our bush #critters: https://www.deep-group.com//responsible-wildlife-provision

16.01.2022 Congratulations to our recently completed honours student, Peter Vaughan, awarded the University of Tasmania University Medal! Awarded to a handful of students university-wide, the medal recognises outstanding achievement in both their undergraduate and honours-research degrees. Well done Peter Vaughan!

14.01.2022 A timely Deep Thought post from PhD Candidate Matt Fielding. For the last 60,000 years, Australia's birds have lived alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait people, developing a profound mutualistic relationship. Matt's post touches on a few of the deep-rooted connections that Indigenous Australians have established with Australian birds and highlights some of the lessons we can learn from traditional knowledge. https://www.deep-group.com//australia-s-birds-are-embedded

13.01.2022 Elephants as refugees. Interesting new paper from our PhD candidate, Tristan Derham https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com//10/pan3.10070 #elephant #refugees

08.01.2022 Back in January, post-doc Stefania Ondei said in her DEEP Though blog post: The frequency at which high-intensity fires have been recently occurring in Tasmania suggests that we will continue to use the word ‘unprecedented’ for quite some time. And wasn’t she spot on. It’s hard to find a more appropriate word to describe the fires (and heat) that continue to burn mainland Australia. Our thoughts go out to the many people and species affected. https://www.deep-group.com//no-country-for-old-trees-tasma

08.01.2022 Members of the DEEP group recently attended the Ecological Society of Australia’s Annual Conference, held in Launceston, Tasmania! True to our group’s research themes, presentations from DEEP covered local, national and international ecological topics from the past, present and future! Here are some of our members presenting, as well as a summary sketch of post-doc Rebecca Wheatley's presentation by the talented Maggie J Watson #ESAus19

08.01.2022 INEFFICIENCY NEEDS CULTIVATING TOO. "Given increasing over-population, limited resources and a global ecosystem suffering unprecedented losses, what argument could there be for cultivating inefficiency?" Find out in this Month's DEEP Thought, written by post-doc Luke Yates. https://www.deep-group.com//inefficiency-needs-cultivating

06.01.2022 The ABC Four Corners 2020 Series Saving the Amazon (https://iview.abc.net.au///series/2020/video/NC2003H008S00) encapsulates last month's DEEP Thought blog post by Carley Fuller; backed by research, the written piece explains how pivotal deforestation in the Amazon is to global-scale biodiversity. #abctv #fourcorners #biodiversity #conservation

06.01.2022 Using #ensemble models can overcome difficulties with #model selection for land-cover classification! Congratulations to Vishesh Leon Diengdoh (& co-authors) for his first PhD publication! *Ensemble algorithm provided as R-script!... https://sciencedirect.com/scien/article//S1574954120300157

05.01.2022 New paper published in Biodiversity and Conservation from our group! PhD Candidate Cristian Montalvo Mancheno and co-authors provide a systematic overview of where, what and how biodiversity has been researched at bioregional scale https://doi.org/10.1007/s10531-019-01913-6

05.01.2022 Meta-analysis: a tool to avoid drowning in a sea of information, or, 'should you be trying to get your hands on some hydroxychloroquine?' - DEEP Thought by Dr. Tom Botterill-Jones https://www.deep-group.com/p/meta-analysis-trumps-fake-news

05.01.2022 A draft law signed last month in Brazil would allow for large-scale mining and oil and gas extraction to take place on designated Indigenous territories. Passage of this law would constitute a significant threat to the land rights of indigenous peoples across the country, many of whom are on the front-lines of the struggle to halt illegal deforestation - PhD candidate Carley Fuller wrote our Deep Thought for this month: https://www.deep-group.com//the-opening-up-of-indigenous-l
