19.01.2022 Fallen coconut leaves are crisp dried in the sun. Thereafter the stem of the leaf is stripped and smoothed. These stems (or ekels in Sri Lanka) are then bundled, cut to size, attached to the broom handle and threaded with coconut fibre string to create their distinctive shape. These tough ekels are perfect for sweeping and raking over uneven ground or between delicate plants.
