All community members are encouraged to attend to give their thoughts and opinions on the tourism strategy. These insights will be used to create the new tourism strategy as part of the Northern Growth Alliance. You can click attending on one of the Facebook events, or head over to Eventbrite and RSVP there. https://business.facebook.com/economictransitions/events/

18.01.2022 Great news! A new archaeological study has begun at Jurien Bay, creating a new potential attraction for tourists. The project, being run by Heritage Detection Australia, hopes to uncover some amazing insights into the structures and the people who lived and worked there during World War Two. This may then also open the door to new tourism opportunities for the region. Check out the blog for the full story! :)... http://economictransitions.com.au/blog/

18.01.2022 We are delighted to say the new Shire of Leonora GeoTrail App is now live! This wonderful project has brought the geology of this unique area to life in this brand new tourism trail. We've worked with the Shire of Leonora, the Department of Mines and petroleum and Easy Mobile Apps to create this unique new experience for the Goldfields. Download the app now and read all about it over on the blog. http://www.economictransitions.com.au/blog/

17.01.2022 What better way to end the day than a peaceful stand up paddle board session with Jurien Bay Adventure Tours!

13.01.2022 Great to see that Norseman is trying to diversify their economic benefit by transitioning from mining to tourism before mining has ceased in the town. The Woodlands Cultural, Community and Visitors Centre would be a wonderful attraction for visitors to the Goldfields. Well done Shire of Dundas! https://thewest.com.au//focus-on-tourist-centre-plans-ng-b

The Gwalia's Gold Launch Weekend will feature a Gatsby-esque cocktail party, walking tours with the characters of Gwalia, a multimedia exhibition and a community bake-off! 11.01.2022 Did you catch this great piece on GWN7 News last week about the archaeological work taking place in Jurien Bay? It's fascinating and sure to open up lots of potential tourism opportunities for the region! Well done to Bob and the Heritage Detection Australia team :) https://www.gwn7.com.au/news/2203-digging-up-history

11.01.2022 JUST OVER ONE WEEK TO GO! The Shire of Leonora will be opening the doors to Gwalia’s State Hotel to the public for the first time in 54 years on the 17th and 18th of November 2018, as part of the Gwalia’s Gold weekend. Did you know the hotel, built in 1903, was the first of the State Hotels to be constructed in Western Australia?... It follows the State Government taking the unusual step of building the State Hotel to provide Gwalia with a licensed premises and to lessen the sly-grog trade. The hotel was opened to the public on 3 June 1903, the cost of construction, including furnishings, amounting to 5,429. In March 1919, the State Hotel was subject to a 'beer strike' when a group of miners agreed to boycott the hotel until their demands for improved conditions were met. In June 1959, Gwalia residents signed a petition against the State's proposed sale of the State Hotel. In the early 1960s, the Government's interest in hotels waned and a number of communities looked to take over the hotels themselves. In Gwalia, after protracted negotiations, the Gwalia community Co. Ltd bought/leased the hotel in 1960 for 18,000. The State Hotel continued to be used as a hotel up until the mid-1960s. After the mine's closure in 1963, Gwalia was nearly deserted, although a number of its building remained. The State Hotel was closed on 17 January 1964, in a town that by then had only 40 residents. There’s plenty more that has happened with the State Hotel since then and hopefully many more exciting developments in the future. Get down to the Gwalia’s Gold weekend to find out more and to see this iconic part of WA’s history for yourself. Return flights from Perth are only $280 for the weekend! Secure your seat by emailing [email protected] and come visit this amazing part of Australia's Golden Outback.
