18.01.2022 I often get asked when is the best time to get sun exposure. There are two parts to this. 1. You need red/infrared light but you also need UVB so that you can make vitamin D. Infrared light you can get from morning to night but is most beneficial during the golden hour around an hour before and after sunrise. At this time of the day you dont get UV light. This red light alone will help you build what is called a solar callus on your skin. The callus built up over several m...onths will help protect you from the strong UV rays which appear later in the day. Anyone, believe it or not, even those of the fairest skin complexion can build this callus so we can get the full benefit of the sun later in the day without burning or sunscreen later in the day. In the evening just before and after sunset youre also only exposed to infrared light and this can heal the skin from the effects of the stronger UV wavelength you have been exposed to during the day. A natural sunscreen protection for thousands of years when we didnt spend over 90% of our time indoors. Now UV light we also need in order to make vitamin D. UVB only appears when the sun has risen above 30 degrees and is usually most intense around noon. Use the dminder app shown here to work out when you can make vitamin D in your neck of the woods. In Perth we are extremely fortunate because located at about 30 latitude we can make vitamin D all year round. The further south you move the more you lose this year round affect of UVB. Its vital to know when you can make vitamin D based on your location so that you can bank your stores during the summer time or look for additional supplementary help in the winter time. Just know that vitamin D you make from the sun is far superior to vitamin D in a pill. You could also download a golden hour app if you want to nerd out a bit more eg Sun Seeker app. You will not make vit D if you are covered in sunscreen and clothing. You also wont get the effects of red light if you wear a hat or sunglasses. 14.01.2022 When I'm asked about getting rid of toxicants from workplaces, schools, clinics, gyms etc I always tell clients to prioritise detoxing their own home first. When you're exposed to toxic loads in your work or leisure time you always want to be able to decompress, rejuvenate and sleep in a nontoxic home afterwards. It should always be your first priority. Then, once you get your home ship-shape (sometimes this may require moving sadly) start looking at your external exposures.... Some of these you might be able to control, but mostly not. My go-to detoxing tool to deal with all these external (uncontrollable) insults is my infrared sauna. For maximum benefits I try use it 4-5 times for at least 20-30 minutes but even just once a week has massive benefits. Saunas are well known for their heating and detoxifying effects. They can rid the body of heavy metals, mould, solvents, BPA, flame-retardants, DDT etc found in our drinking water, food and air. But saunas also create what is known as a 'hormetic effect'; another way of saying "that which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. They take you out of your comfort zone and your mitochondria and health thrive as a result. Research on the benefits of saunas is absolutely outstanding. 07.01.2022 Back in the day when I used to work in the I could start work in the office at 8am and work til 7 in the evening time. On a good day I might spend 10 minutes outside eating my lunch. Most days Id rush back to my desk and eat in front of my computer. Other days my fitness regime entailed going to the gym in a basement next door. Now I know this life was slowly killing me. Why? We have evolved under the . Specific packets of energy from the drive every biological effe...ct in our body. We need the light in our eyes and on our skin to set in motion hormones, neurotransmitters and immune messengers. We look for complex solutions to our health without realising its being significantly compromised by our comfortable indoor lifestyles. A deficiency in natural light. Even our food made through photosynthesis is the embodiment of light. Eat after dark and youre giving your body the wrong signal that its light outside. Cue obesity. If your downtime is then spent indoors working out under artificial light you are even more blue light toxic. LED or fluorescent lights produce a completely unnatural spectrum of light in contrast to nature. The flicker from these lights is also horrendous. The stress on your system you cant see. But I have devices that can show you all this. To see the flicker yourself take a video in slow motion of the lights in your gym or office and see what you find. Start looking at how you can increase the natural light in your day and reduce the artificial. One way is to simply get outside more. Can you take your laptop and work outside? The coast is not usually a good option because mobile phone towers usually litter our coastline. But today I was pleasantly surprise to find a home that was over a kilometre from mobile phone towers. In this day and age that is very unusual. ... Your postcode matters more than you think when it comes to your health. Im so delighted that I get so many calls these days from people relocating wanting to make sure their home is a healthy one before putting in an offer or even renting.
