18.01.2022 Eyespots painted on cow butts deter lion attacks! #Humanwildlifeconflict is a main driver for large predator declines globally. Predators attack livestock and farmers shoot predators in retaliation. #Ecosure specialise in human-wildlife conflict solutions.... Cam Radford, our Sydney Manager, has just published some of his work in Natures Communications Biology showing how eyespots stop lions attacking livestock, promoting coexistence between lions and livestock farmers. Eyespots are common in nature as anti-predator signals, famously found on butterfly wings. Cam has shown they work for mammals too, and can be hijacked as a tool for coexistence. Check out the paper here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-020-01156-0. And the article in The Conversation here: https://theconversation.com/lions-are-less-likely-to-attack

17.01.2022 Bushland on your property could help you generate passive income by simply preserving it. If your bushland has been identified as being potentially high in biodiversity value, what does this mean? Well, in NSW, Biodiversity Stewardship Agreements are used by landholders wishing to generate and sell biodiversity credits under the Biodiversity Offset Scheme. They provide permanent conservation and management of the biodiversity values on your land, known as a Biodiversity Stewa...rdship Site. In return you earn an additional income. You might ask how? Developers who clear native bushland or impact biodiversity are required to secure like-for-like biodiversity credits. These can be ecosystem credits (such as a bushland community) or species credits (such as threatened species). So, you could sell biodiversity credits on your property to either: 1) Developers 2) the Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT), or 3) other interested parties such as philanthropic groups. We can do a quick desktop assessment to let you know what biodiversity credits you are likely to have on your property and indication of what they are worth. Register for this by giving us a call on 1300 112 021. A link to the full article: https://ecosure.com.au//biodiversity-stewardship-could-se/

16.01.2022 How much does the world invest in biodiversity conservation in Indo-Burma? The Indo-Burma region (Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and parts of southern China) is one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots home to large numbers of species, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. However, with the region’s large (and rapidly growing) human population, and intense pressure on its natural ecosystems, many of these species are threatened with extin...ction. The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) has invested tens of millions of dollars in biodiversity conservation initiatives in Indo-Burma since 2008, guided by a strategy document known as an ecosystem profile. CEPF recently engaged #Ecosure to conduct a study into biodiversity conservation funding in Indo-Burma, to read more about it please click here https://j.mp/32X6cjZ #ecosureau #wildlife #environmentalmanagement #ecologicalrestoration

16.01.2022 Here at #Ecosure we often come across irregular or unnatural tree markings whilst in the bush. Marked by distinctive cuts within the tree itself, these are often referred to as blaze or reference trees. A blaze is a carved marking, normally within the trunk of a tree used to determine distance, navigation and specifics on a property. In fact, many blazes can date back to the first organised parcels of land marked out by early European settlers in the 1800s. Located on a par...cel boundary at Upper Orara and a boundary corner at Tullymorgan, these trees show clear examples of blazes likely dating to the 1800s. These interesting markings show signs of regrowth over the scaring, this is often the case for many older blaze markings as the tree naturally regenerates the damaged trunk. Despite their history, finding older blaze trees is often difficult as forests are cleared, logged or burnt. #EcosureCoffsHarbour #TreeHistory #ProtectOldGrowthForests

15.01.2022 Ecosure starts a Reconciliation Action Plan! At the beginning of 2020 Ecosure started a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) with Reconciliation Australia. You might ask what is a RAP? Its program that provides a framework for organisations to support the national reconciliation movement. There are four stages to the RAP Reflect, Innovate, Stretch, Elevate. A RAP is a strategic document that supports our business plan and includes practical actions to drive our contribution to... reconciliation both internally and in the communities we operate in. It prepares our organisation for reconciliation initiatives, allowing us to scope and develop relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders. Through this process we decide on the specific actions we will commit to that are meaningful, mutually beneficial and sustainable. Ultimately, our RAP helps Ecosure develop respectful relationships and create meaningful opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is our demonstration of our commitment to recognise and support diversity in cultures and values and foster collegiality, collaboration and reconciliation between the First Peoples of Australia and the wider Australian community.

11.01.2022 Celebrating 10 Years in Central Queensland! Over the last 10 years, the CQ team has grown from 2 staff members to 10 full-time staff and 15 part-time and casual field staff. We are a total team of 25 and growing! We have also established long-term relationships delivering vegetation and wildlife management, environmental services and advice for local councils, natural resource management groups, industry and the rural sector. 75% of our Leadership team have advanced within t...he business over time as they have kicked goals! This includes our General Manager, Diane Lanyon who started in Central Queensland in 2012 as a Project Manager, and moved onto the role of CQ Regional Manager. Similarly our Business Process Manager, Heather Richards, started in 2014 as a Team Leader and then served as CQ Regional Manager. Paul Wileman, started as a Senior Project Manager in 2017 and early this year started as our new Regional Manager in Central Queensland. Most of our permanent graduates, environmental scientists and ecologists in CQ started as casual employees. They were then encouraged to do an environmental science degree with CQUniversity. As a flexible employer we worked around their busy study schedules and a lot of our team members have been with us for 5 years plus! Were certainly looking to continue to building on our rich history in Central Queensland, for another 10+years! 10.01.2022 Vanessa Cain from the Coffs Office participated in the threatened species bake off last weekend, here is a photo of her fantastic green sea turtle cake! For more info about the competition click here: https://j.mp/35eItNP Did you know? Green Turtles are widely distributed in tropical and sub-tropical oceans. Female green turtles take 30-40 years to reach maturity and many return to the same nesting area each year. They migrate long distances between their natal beaches and f...eeding grounds, and on their travels face a lot of threats including: as bycatch from trawl nets, longline fishing and gillnets, loss of habitat including coastal development and destruction of seagrass beds, disturbance from vehicles on beaches, overharvesting and the illegal trade. Climate change also poses a threat from increased temperatures which influence the gender of hatchlings during egg development. In the northern Great Barrier Reef, surveys identified that over the last two decades, 99% of hatchlings were female due to the temperature of nests exceeding 29 degrees. Its not all bad news though. Conservation programs are underway in Australia and internationally to reduce bycatch, protect habitat and raise awareness of the species, along with various research projects both locally and internationally. #TSBakeOff #ecosureau #wildlife #environmentalmanagement #ecologicalrestoration

09.01.2022 It's Australian Wildlife Week! This week is marked every year across the country to encourage a positive relationship between humanity and nature. 09.01.2022 COVID19 has made us look at how we can work differently. It also encouraged us to look at our environmental footprint. Ecosure staff are able to work from home. For our field crews its been business as usual with a few changes to safety procedures and social distancing see link to previous blog here: https://ecosure.com.au//covid-19-update-from-the-ecologic/. With office staff working from home from 16 March18 May, we saved over 25,000kg of CO2 emissions from our offices ...alone. Thats pretty impressive! See the graph for our various offices and emissions reductions. Lockdown also dropped air pollution in Brisbane and Gold Coast. On average, pollution in the cities fell by 30% after lockdown. The red in the second image shows a higher concentration of nitrogen dioxide, while the green and yellow show less. This links you to the original article: http://rebrand.ly/o4db9o1. As we return to the office environment, lets ponder how we can continue to reduce our environmental footprint. How has COVID19 reduced your environmental footprint? What changes have you made that youre likely to maintain? 09.01.2022 Saiphos equalis - yellow-bellied three-toed skink. Saiphos is monotypic as it is the only species classified under the genus Saiphos. This endemic species to Australia has been baffling scientists for generations - it usually gives birth by laying eggs but recently some have been observed giving birth to live young. This is likely to mean we are witnessing evolution further providing us with a rare glimpse of how placentas evolved. It is the first time scientists have been able to witness the evolution of a species in a single lifetime. Scientists have also noted that yellow-bellied skinks are continuing to lay eggs in the warm coastal lowlands while the same species occurring in the colder and more mountainous areas, are giving birth to live young. #nature #lowerbeechmont #Ecosure #EcologicalRestoration

05.01.2022 Bilbies are desert-dwelling marsupial omnivores. At the time of European colonisation of Australia, there were two species. The lesser bilby became extinct in the 1950s; the greater bilby survives but remains endangered. It is currently listed as a vulnerable species. Did you know? The term bilby is a loanword from the Yuwaalaraay Aboriginal language of northern New South Wales, meaning long-nosed rat. It is known as dalgite in Western Australia, and the nickname pinkie is so...metimes used in South Australia. The Wiradjuri of New South Wales also call it bilby. 05.01.2022 Wasps although smalla significant hazard to aviation! Birds and other vertebrates are well known hazards to aviation at airports. The threat of invertebrates, like wasps, is less understood. Our Managing Director Phil Shaw and former Principal Ecologist Alan House wrote a scientific paper on a 39 month study at Brisbane Airport. The study assessed the risk to flight safety by the mud-nesting keyhole wasp (Pachodynerus nasidens). The keyhole wasp views aircraft pitot tubes as... an attractive nesting opportunity and therefore blocking the tube. Pitot tubes measure airspeed, and blockages cause faulty measurements. This could lead to catastrophic outcomes. In this experiment the tubes were covered to see if this reduced nesting. Risk was greatly reduced when 33% to 75% of tubes were covered on arrival of the aircraft at the airport. This is significant when the cost of wasp management on airport is set against the costs of an aircraft incident. 02.01.2022 This year the United Nations celebrate 35 years of the Vienna Convention and 35 years of global ozone layer protection. The phaseout of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change. Furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the Earth. The slogan for 2020, Ozone for life, reminds us that ozone is crucial for our life on Earth and we must continue to protect the ozone layer for our future generations also.
