17.01.2022 Weed Wednesday Blackberry nightshade Botanical name: Solanum nigrum A short-lived bushy weed that can grow up to 1m tall. Stems and leaves are spar...sely hairy and are generally a purply-green colour, particularly when young. Leaves are generally 4-7cm long and 2-5cm wide and are ovate (egg shaped). Leaf margins are either lobed or bluntly toothed. Flowers are white, from which small green berries (2-8mm diameter) form. As the berries mature, they turn black. Blackberry nightshade is very similar to glossy nightshade. The main difference being that blackberry nightshade has a general dull appearance compared to the glossy/shiny appearance of glossy nightshade. The plant is known to contain toxic alkaloid and accumulate nitrate, mostly in the leaves and unripe berries. The weed is a host for many pasture and crop pests and diseases. Seed is often spread by animals and birds that eat the berries that can contain 20-30 seeds. Maintaining ground cover will reduce establishment of seedlings. 16.01.2022 I thought I needed to write this post to explain fully why I am so passionate about the Mother of Ducks Lagoon and trying everything I possibly can to prevent i...t being drained forever. Growing up the Lagoon was always there it became part of coming home. I could never imagine Guyra to be without it. Two photos quite contrasting, what the lagoon is like when full and then when dry. I know what I would prefer to look at. I have had a lot of strong & passionate women in my life, some now passed & some with us still. My mother is definitely on top of the list followed closely by Gloria George, Thea Wilson & Sue Rice. These ladies had a dream to partially restore the lagoon with the hope of it eventually being fully restored. I believe I owe it to them to do everything within my power to keep their dream alive. They succeeded, with a lot of hard work to have the lagoon partially restored, it is now my job to keep this dream alive. I know a lot of people think we need the water that the bores will provide. The fact is there are a lot of more sustainable ways to keep our water supply, one of these being Puddledock Dam. These bores will affect a lot of things, not only in Guyra & Armidale but a lot of towns, rivers, wildlife. Underground water is not unlimited, this is being proven with lots of towns now having bores fail. We have just come out of the worse drought for 100 years or in known history. We have learnt how precious water is & we should not forget this. This is my beliefs and not necessarily facts, this is why I am asking for your help in letting me honor these inspiring ladies who had the vision to keep something so precious alive If you can help all I ask is that you could please sign the petition by clicking the below link. http://chng.it/zRQhhwm4
