24.01.2022 Every time you crack open your hives you probably light your smoker! In this Beekeeping 101 episode we cover one way to light your bee smoker, and also our handy new liquid bee smoke perfect for those in fire ban areas. Do you know how to ensure your smoke is a "cool" smoke, rather than hot smoke? Hot smoke can aggrivate and harm your bees, rather than calming them. 23.01.2022 Happy Father's Day to our beekeeping dads! Here's another helpful mini beekeeper in the making! @ourwanderingwild

23.01.2022 QUEEN BEE MARKING 101 Did you know there are five queen bee marking colours that follow an internationally recognised colour sequence, depending on the last number of the year the queen was born? Since queen bees do not live more than 5 years, the colour code starts over in the sixth year. A common mnemonic used by beekeepers to remember the colours is, "Will You Raise Goods Bees" - White, Yellow, Red, Green, Blue. White = Year ends in 1 or 6... Yellow = Year ends in 2 or 7 Red = Year ends in 3 or 8 Green = Year ends in 4 or 9 Blue = Year ends in 5 or 0 As your Queen is vital to the health, productivity and temperament of your hive, colour coding will allow you to easily remember and identify when a Queen Bee may be due to be replaced in your colony with a younger Queen. Mark the queen with a small spot of paint on her back (thorax). Our POSCA paint pens may be used to mark the queen, and one of our queen catcher devices will help to safely hold her in place.

21.01.2022 It might be time to start thinking about splitting your hive. Splitting you hive not only increases your apiary size but can also help to reduce the urge to swarm by reducing overcrowding! 21.01.2022 When you’ve been a beekeeper for a while, you have your preferences. You might prefer to feed honey over sugar syrup, and gumboots fit you better than beekeeping boots. But when you’re first starting, all your beekeeping purchases and management decisions have to be based on your best guess or advice from people in the know. Picking the frames for your hives is one of the many decisions you’ll have to make when you buy your first hive - or if you’re looking to upgrade yo...ur existing frames. You can choose between traditional wooden hive frames or newer plastic models each has upsides and downsides. Here’s what you need to know https://bit.ly/WoodenOrPlastic

21.01.2022 If you catch a swarm and get the queen inside, the rest of the colony will follow her scent and march on in! It's a real life follow the leader. How cool is that!

17.01.2022 'Tis the season for busy bees! How are you going, keeping up with the flow?

16.01.2022 BURR COMB TIP! During a honey flow burr comb can quickly build up in your lids - especially in migratory lids like this one. Some beekeepers don't mind this build up, but there's no denying that it's a messy and time consuming job to clean up. One tip is to sit one of our inner covers or inner boards (also called a hive mat) between your lid and super, to reduce the burr comb build up which can cause honey to drip through your hive as you scrape it off before removing frames of honey. What do you do to manage and process burr comb in your hives?

16.01.2022 Marking your queen using our "handy" One Hand Queen Catcher! Easily hold your frame in one hand, while safely scooping up your precious queen with the other. Our upcoming beekeeping video series featuring @adrianthebeefarmer will show just how easy marking your queen can be! #beekeeping #beekeepingaustralia

16.01.2022 Spring and summer are prime swarming times! When a colony swarms, roughly half the population, including the queen, leaves the hive in search of a new home with extra space. Beekeepers are left with a depleted hive that will produce less honey over summer, and needs to rebuild its population before winter. If you’re diligent about monitoring your hives, you should be able to prevent swarming from happening! Check out our recent blog and video series on preventing swarming, so that you don't lose any bees to swarming this season!

12.01.2022 BEGINNER TIP: Join a local beekeeping club or group! There’s probably one near you, or a great community online with many helpful Facebook groups around! Clubs and groups let local beekeepers share resources and information, give them a chance to chat about their hives and trade ideas, and often have demonstrations or training sessions for newer beekeepers to learn new skills.
