25.01.2022 2018 will be another busy year. There are some lesson times available after school. I'll be teaching at the School Locker in Maroochydore most afternoons. On Saturday mornings I head down to North Lakes and teach at the School Locker there. I've been playing non-stop over December. Had great fun filling in on bass with Annie J & Fusion for two gigs. I'm really getting into Sibelius music software and have dusted off 30 old tunes that I found in turn of the century music journals. It's musical archaeology. Unfortunately, Sibelius can't reproduce a full size mandolin or banjo orchestra of 40 plus musicians, but it does a good job on mandolin and guitar duets, banjo duets and other interesting combinations.

25.01.2022 Here's some jaw dropping monster guitar playing to inspire you all https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEMWTyO8iXQ

25.01.2022 This should be a great concert. Bill is a great guitarist with a unique style. Not at all what you'd expect from a "jazz" guitarist - just check out the collection of effects pedals in the photo!

24.01.2022 The sixties are a long time ago now and a lot of Australian music from that era is unknown because it didn't sell well at the time or was only played in one State but not the others. The Throb had a big hit with a cover of "Fortune Teller" but the one I really like is called "Believe In Me". Check it out here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKoprqdVWes

23.01.2022 This school became a national leader by focusing on a neglected subject

23.01.2022 I just learned that my webpage has expired. Some company called Domain Rescue rang me claiming to be able to restore it (for a fee I imagine). Anyone had any dealings with them?

22.01.2022 SCREAM Big Band had its first rehearsal for 2018 on Friday night. Several new members have joined the band and we're looking for places to play. So, if anyone reading this has an event and a large stage we'd love to hear from you.

21.01.2022 Fastest finger picking ever?

21.01.2022 Hands of angel!!! Agustín Barrios Mangoré - 'La Catedral' Ana Vidovic: guitar... Agustín Pío Barrios (also known as Agustín Barrios Mangoré and Nitsuga --Agustin spelled backwards-- Mangoré; May 5, 1885 August 7, 1944) was a Paraguayan virtuoso classical guitarist and composer, largely regarded as one of the greatest performers and most prolific composers for the guitar. His music remained undiscovered for over three decades after his death. Barrios's compositions can be divided into three basic categories: folkloric, imitative and religious. Barrios paid tribute to the music and people of his native land by composing pieces modeled after folk songs from South America and Central America. Imitating the compositional style and techniques of the Baroque and Romantic periods was another side to his craftsmanship. "La Catedral" may be viewed as Barrios' tribute to Bach. It is believed that "La Catedral" was inspired by a religious experience for Barrios; therefore, the piece may also be categorized under religion. Religious beliefs and experiences also played an important role in Barrios' compositional process. Una Limosna por el Amor de Dios (Alms for the Love of God) is another example of a religiously-inspired work. Breaking down the works of Barrios into these three categories helps the guitar enthusiast to understand Barrios's musical intent.

20.01.2022 After about 45 years of playing guitar, I have lost all the padding in my fretting hand fingertips. Even though I play for around 8 hours a day and have pretty tough skin, there is no padding (collagen) underneath. i've tried a few things to fix this and the latest is Collagen Beauty with Verisol (not too sure what that is) and Vitamin C. I haven't noticed any improvement in my fingers but the skin on my forehead is now feeling smooth and free of sun damage! If it gets rid of the keratoses on the backs of my hands, I'll be very happy.

19.01.2022 Just discovered some great tenor banjo players. Check all frets.com for more guitar, banjo and mandolin videos

19.01.2022 Before the ukulele craze there was the mandolin orchestra. Here is an example from 1910 clutching instruments that would be worth a packet today.

18.01.2022 Over the years there have been many precocious young musicians who possessed a skill beyond what you expect from someone of their age. In the eighties on Australian guitarist named Nathan Cavaleri. In the Fifties in America there were the Collins Kids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ur7br6Y5CE

18.01.2022 This is a fantastic introduction to the sound and capabilities of a harp guitar in the hands of a skilled musician. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHS7w2AuCKY

17.01.2022 These guys are amazing. The bass player has a 6 string fretless bass and some pedal that makes his bass sound like a synthesizer. The drummer is a groove making bundle of joy. And there's some flashy guitar playing too!

16.01.2022 Eric Clapton got some of his guitar licks from Big Bill Broonzy

15.01.2022 Smooth jazz from an amazing player.

14.01.2022 The Rosenbergs playing at home!

13.01.2022 Today was a busy but fun one. First up, a performance at the Caloundra Chorale's Pleasant Sunday Afternoon. The debut of the Bettega / Barletta Duo with my good friend Basil Barletta of A to Zed Drumming joining me for a guitar and marimba (wooden xylophone) duet on the Beatles' "Blackbird". We followed this up with an original flamenco style piece called "Leave It Alone", which featured Basil on Cajon and bongos. Good fun. Immediately after I raced off to Pacific Lutheran College for a performance by the guitar ensemble. An outdoor setting is always a challenge, dealing with wind and dodgy sound but the boys did very well.

13.01.2022 One of my students has just retired as an oncologist after 40 plus years of service at the Nambour Hospital. He started having ukulele lessons with me 4 years ago and despite many interruptions for medical conferences, has managed to come a long way in improving his skills and rhythm. I'm sure having a musical outlet must have been a good release after dealing with life and death situations all day in the cancer ward.

13.01.2022 The 2019 Teaching year is about to get busy. My music lessons resume at Immanuel and Pacific Lutheran Colleges next week. I will have some vacancies for private students in the Caloundra area. I teach acoustic and electric guitar and bass. Also mandolin, banjo, ukulele and harmonica. I have a blue card and have completed my annual child safety training. Give me a call if you have any questions.

11.01.2022 Some great bass and guitar on the this one. The guitarist really rips into his solo.

10.01.2022 Have just discovered "classic banjo" where the banjo is strung with nylon strings and the music comes from the banjo's peak period of popularity - 1880s - 1920s. Check out the Titanic String Band on Youtube for more info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eibkwv6kn88

09.01.2022 Check this out - classic guitar instrumentals down by a unique guit-steel master https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bHWhbu_mbk

08.01.2022 There's a seriously good musical being staged at the Caloundra Chorale Theatre - The Secret Garden - one enthusiastic audience member told us it was "professional!" There are a few seats left but they will sell fast based on the feedback from this week's audience. I have been involved as part of the mini orchestra, which consists of Neil Booth and Ken Kelly on keyboards and myself on bass and acoustic guitar.

07.01.2022 Came across some posts on Youtube about guitars made from Bamboo. My brother had some experience helping a friend who wanted to build one. He found it went mouldy but the Indonesians seem to have come up with some good sounding instruments. Check out this clip and see what you think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no2I0no2PUE

06.01.2022 Christmas gift idea - a music lesson gift voucher.

04.01.2022 I'm very impressed with the Kato brand classical guitars. They look and sound great and are very playable without breaking the bank. I purchased one recently after trying a lot of different ones. I've been playing my old Takamine for 23 years and it's gotten quite battered, so I'm re-inspired with this new one.

03.01.2022 Thanks to Mark at Mooloolaba Music who lowered the action on my steel string acoustic and recommended Thomastik silk wrapped strings. They have given my guitar a fantastic tone and the lower tension is easier on my worn out finger tips. Hear it in action in the latest Caloundra Chorale production - "The Secret Garden". But hurry, it's almost sold out.

01.01.2022 The Music Matters workshop for December has been cancelled.
