25.01.2022 new cover photo taken in 1958 of my grandmother's vineyard at Campanella near Asti
24.01.2022 The first vineyard rose, thank you Judy!
22.01.2022 The Sheiling is an old homestead up north. On the property, a new vineyard is being established. Calling for volunteers to help plant 840 grape vines. I hope the planting will take place the week of the March 25th. Come on by, dig a hole, plant a vine, grab a bite and a drink. Visitors just wanting a chat and a look are welcome. More information to follow... Many thanks, john
21.01.2022 Because I have a strong belief in not using non organic herbicides, weed management is mainly manually done. Thanks to Anne-Maria for working the fences while I mowed.
16.01.2022 The work has again ended for a time at Eden farm's Sheiling vineyard with soil and compost building, irrigation system installation , animal proof fencing upgrades. Now there will be a rest before planting 840 shiraz rootlings in November. Special thanks go out to Sandro, Judy and Roger for their support, advice and winery and vineyard materials.
15.01.2022 The last of the 92 end-posts, right through a sheoak stump and the first of the mid post are now installed....
15.01.2022 Artichokes-sometime they are difficult to present to my fellow Australians-Sandro, I'll save a few for you.
13.01.2022 I will be taking a break now from the vineyard construction. Just finished with all the 300+ post, anchors and end strainers. I am about 20 short as I have tried to maximise space and added a few more trellises...maybe start a few days on the irrigation wires and strengthen the animal proof fence.
13.01.2022 Cattle muster down Edens Road with the new farm residents.
12.01.2022 This has been a dream for the past few years and finally the trellising has started. There are a few hurtles of course, limestone outcroppings, inclement weather, and buried power cables. Slowly and steady, they are taking shape.
11.01.2022 Thank you to my friends, new and old, who helped plant The Shelling vineyard today. I am at a loss of words that would articulate the appriciation that I have for the full day of work that they donated. thank you so much!
11.01.2022 This is the first star picket to get located. It will be an earth anchor for the end post. Most of the anchors have been positioned using tape measure, 100m line tape, pocket transit and an eye ball. The weather is closing in and there is the town journey for supplies tomorrow. The end post positioning next on the work schedule...
11.01.2022 Vineyard Update- The irrigation system is about 95% complete, I am 5m short with the 13mm polytube after installing 1500m. Here I have collected cut chaffy saw sedge that was slashed on the property. There were about 40-50 trailer loads collected and distributed here. I have used it as a weed mulch in the trellis rows. There will be no herbicides used in this vineyard. November will see the planting of the vine rootlings...
08.01.2022 Preparing for tomorrows planting with a few rows planted and vine guarded. One ton of compost for the holes, more weeding and a lot of odds and ends attended to. I look forward to seeing you here, if there is a deluge with the rain, we'll seek shelter in the Shelling. Tonight i pray to Bacchus for a good day of planting.
04.01.2022 Picked up the grape vines today, watered and gave them good vibes, then locked them away in the big shed overnight. Checking the shed that evening, there was a possum in the vines!!!! Tried to wrangle the little fella, but to no positive end...i hope the excitement of the chase, will have him stay hidden til the morn...planting still on for Saturday come wind and rain...
04.01.2022 Back to the vineyard work. This time it is the irrigation installation.
03.01.2022 With the first grape vines planted today, I'll calling the vineyard established. HOWEVER, I only planted about 25 or so vines and a few berry plants. The main planting, unfortunately, has been delayed due to the 840 shiraz vines not mature enough to go in the ground. The nursery folks will hold on to them until March. They tell me there will not be problems with planting them then. So staying positive, things are moving forward...
