22.01.2022 Thoughts from 2 Cor 1 Summary: the first part of the chapter talks about suffering and how God comforts us so we can comfort others. Paul expected to die in Asia and learnt how to stop relying on himself. He thanks the Corinthian church for their prayers and said that God had answered them. He ends with apologizing that plans have changed and they can no longer visit. Question: what caused the plans to change? What does v23 mean when it says ‘to spare you from severe rebuk...e’? Lesson: comfort others. Paul talks about God showering us in comfort! Don’t just limit ourselves to thoughts and prayers. The biggest comfort is our hope, a time when ‘sorrow and mourning will disappear’ (Isaiah 51:11). Share this good news but share it with a home cooked meal, a hug, a card and more ‘showerings’ of comfort.
18.01.2022 Readings thoughts on Psa 119:41-80 Summary: a lovely read talking about how David relies on God and his instructions. I read in the NLT and it came across beautifully. David really seems to love God’s instructions and meditating and thinking on them. He isn’t ashamed to share it with even kings and values instruction more than money. You are good and do only good, this chapter is a great one for improving our prayers and how we can praise God. He talks about how God turns h...is path around and how much better his life is for it. Question: David talks about arrogant people smearing him with lies but also seems to acknowledge his guilt. What event was he talking about in his life? Lesson: not to let people pull us away by being anchored and sure with God. To love God’s word enough that we aren’t even ashamed to tell ‘kings’, to really believe that the bible will teach ‘good knowledge and judgement’. I love verse 55 about reflecting at night on who God is. And verse 62 rising at midnight to thank God for being just. I always feel guilty I’m not a morning person and don’t ‘rise praising god’ I guess the lesson is, any time of the day is a good time to talk to God and thank him or think about his character.
14.01.2022 Readings thoughts on Luke 3 Summary: we are introduced to John the Baptist, who would prepare the way for his cousin, Jesus. His mission was to preach that people be sorry for their sins and get baptised to show this. Crowds came to see him and he didn’t hold back on hypocritical people. He says to be more giving to the poor, be honest and content with your pay. John said that he was not the messiah. He baptises Jesus and God shows his approval in the form of a dove and his ...words ‘you are my dearly loved son who brings me great joy’. The chapter ends with Jesus genealogy including some well known characters like Boaz, David and Methuselah. Question: what is the reason Jesus ancestors are listed? Lesson: if someone is hungry- feed them! If they need clothes- give them yours! Look for ways to give: food banks, meals cooked for others, donate clothes, give to homeless and sponsor a child. Do we bring God great joy? Are we sorry for our sins? Are we right with God?
