18.01.2022 Customary 'Hello World' message to greet everyone!
16.01.2022 IKEA food range packaging is an attention grabber during recent trip. If you can make "Pastej Lax" - i.e.: Salmon paste in a tube (God bless Swedish and their unique delicacies) look sexy enough to buy, you know you are crack designer. P.S.: The brief wasn't any easier either, apparently: "The products should always express the key values: reliability, quality and Swedishness." On closer inspection there is nothing but one tone illustration with Verdana as the chosen font. Ve...rdana, the one font that has been around since 1996, made in U.S.A, hardly Swedish in any way and - here is the best bit - comes standard with your Windows CD. There you go... You could have been the next big IKEA designer since 1996, but no, sorry; the peeps at Stockholm Design Lab have beaten you to it. So what makes this generic design works so brilliantly? This is what the CEO had to say: "The product name is in Swedish; sometimes people don’t know how this product is meant to be consumed. So we have pictures to show that." ... and that is exactly it: A direct, clean and minimalistic approach. Combine this with lots of empty space and you'll fill the customer with enough information on what they are getting in no time, plus plenty of void to provoke their interest and imagination. Feels like Australian Homebrand have so much more to learn. Admittedly, naming your product in foreign language always sounds better. "Hem varumärke mjölk" anyone?
15.01.2022 Truth is, working in the creative field is not always happy and dandy time with unicorn dancing on top of a rainbow - Unless, of course, you are literally on LSD; but we at Edenhall Studio does not condone the use of acid aye? Kids remember: "Winners Don't Use Drugs". Going back to the topic, sometimes it gets to the point where we would just sit there for hours and hours with blank canvas, especially on warm sleepy Sunday afternoon like today. So, in the attempt on jump star...ting those creative juices, we raid the kitchen for munchies and... There it was, the ever-so-difficult option: Espresso double shot or cold glass of Cab Sav. Caffeine vs. alcohol. Despite being both considered the drink of creative mind, does one actually works better than the other? Thankfully, a quick Google search showed a scientifically proven answer to this dilemma -- written by Mikael Cho and beautifully illustrated by Ryoko Iwata from ILoveCofee for us who are more visual than linguist: http://en.ilovecoffee.jp/posts/view/79 For us? Err.. 'Por que no los dos'? Now, where is my coffee martini. P.S.: We had a great weekend and we hope everyone had a great one too!
05.01.2022 Our last post on IKEA and their love of Verdana had sparked recent kitchen conversation with a friend (Teacher by profession, not designer) on the topic of the infamous Comic Sans; another Microsoft font bundled with any of your Windows circa 1995. Unbeknownst to many, before its massive downfall, Comic Sans had enjoyed a fair bit of worldwide boom, however, tripped and fallen to the lowest point of even having its own sworn enemy (bancomicsans.com). Which pose the question: ...Why do we hate Comic Sans? We used to love it, so... Do we just mature up? Or like any other pop culture *cough* Bieber *cough* was it because everyone else hate it so we should too? From a designer point of view, Comic Sans had broken fair bit of design rules: inaccurate kerning and uneven weighting which makes it terribly hard to read. Not surprisingly as it was never serious and had originally intended for punchy speech bubble inside Microsoft Bob (Now obsolete product). Think of the good old Word's Clippy, except older and in a form of a dog. Get the idea now? Comic Sans was created for a very specific purpose and had been used outside of its context repeatedly due to its fame. From public newsletter, warning sign, police notice and (God bless) Pope Benedict XVI e-Book from the Vatican themselves - pun intended. Just like anything, when you have too much you'll ended up hating it. Well... Maybe almost everything, there is your loved one, Helvetica and IKEA KÖTTBULLAR. P.S.: Are you a Comic Sans criminal?
03.01.2022 Recent chat with a friend triggered curiosity on great wedding card design. In hope of having the best, many set aside a big chunk of wedding budget on getting the classiest design on the best paper stock possible; think of white satin and silk decorated with heaps of golds and glitters and all that jazz. Perhaps all that missing are butterflies and rainbows spewing out of the card -- and mind you, the thicker the card the sadder your wallet will be. While some Bridezillas w...ill swore upon their ancestor and say 'yes this is necessary', it doesn't change the fact that it would ended up being just another invitation card forgotten as soon as the wedding ends. But what if we can create a lasting memory even after the card has long misplaced? Not surprisingly, a creative design can turn a budget wedding invitation into something more memorable than the expensive counter part (And don't we all love the word 'budget' *wink*). Think of retro, good humour and minimalist. The aim is to engage your audiences, get your message across creatively, effectively and give the readers few chuckles on the way! They'll sure to remember that. This invitation might have just hit all the criterias above: http://ashevilleindieweddings.squarespace.com//wedding-inv
03.01.2022 Initially we weren't going to do a post on this topic, however, it had lasted tad long to be considered just as a quick novelty. If you've been wondering about the flood of non-sensical comic filled with inside joke on your Facebook wall, you are not alone. They are called Bitstrip and apparently has been around since 2008, initially started as a way to for its creator (A comic artist named Ba) to streamline his drawing process, then partnered up with Cartoon Network in 2011 ...as an anti bullying project before moving to Facebook in 2012. However, total domination (A staggering 20 million users) weren't achieved until last couple of week when they released an app for both iOS and Android. On the other end, steadily gaining its own hatred army. Just like any other fad, all good and dandy at first until everyone on your friendlist rush and overuse it. Similar to how photographer despise Instagram and how musicians feel about Garageband, cartoons used to hold a special meaning to all of us; it was a novelty getting a caricature made by those market buskers and cartoon was *the* channel for satire and witty humour. All of these are pretty much killed with quick point and click avatar filled with inside jokes. Seems like it is more fun for the people using it than the audiences. Bitstrip's success phenomenon is rather babbling too; almost like a crossover between Bratz doll and Wii avatar, it is not a game and yet people are flocking in to use it. On an attempt, it seems that there is more effort required in creating a story than just doing a quick status update, which pose the question whether we are reaching the point where text just doesn't cut it anymore? Amazingly enough, all of this without any marketing budget: "We’ve done zero advertising, and our acquisition cost so far has been nothing," said Shahan Panth, the marketing VP for Bitstrips. Would be interesting to see how they perform in the next couple of months. In the meantime, we'll just drop this hint here for those of you that are thinking of blocking your friend (don't) over Bitstrip (and potentially every other future fad).
