25.01.2022 Kerrie Bell sent through this lovely old photo and information. It is Kerrie's bicycle in the photo. Thank you Kerrie. Posted by Kerry Payne.... Who remembers the hairdressing salon that was run by Betty West in the 60's . It was between what we called the Top Cafe and the Co Op. When she came, the town was desperate for a hairdresser and Mum worked from 7 til 7 for a couple of weeks to start with.
25.01.2022 More Paul McDonald Henley photos- enjoy. Cheers Geoff Langsworth.
24.01.2022 Julie Burke shared this on another page. A fitting tribute to Neil Cassidy.
24.01.2022 A photo of 1972 Sun Tour presentation has also been provided by Tammy Whitehead( I think ?) 23.01.2022 Photo of the Shire of Kowree Honor Board for World War One. The Honor Board was erected in December 1921 and was unveiled by Mr W.Salter, M.L.A. In February 2015 the board was moved to the foyer in the Edenhope Council Chambers . This is a magnificent piece of craftsmanship and is a great tribute to the men and women who served our Country during World War One. Geoff Langsworth - 0409551911.

22.01.2022 Follow up post to our last post regarding the ending of World War Two and the welcoming home of servicemen and the celebrations that followed. Article published in The Kowree Advocate dated 28-08-1945 includes " a list of discharged service personnel including that ever popular Digger George Gleeson, who had been a prisoner of war for over four years. " I am sure you will recognize many local names among this list, with many descendants still living in the district today. Regards - Geoff Langsworth.

19.01.2022 I am trying to find out that date this article and photo was published in the newspaper. I assume it appeared in The Horsham Times possibly about 1982 /83. The heading says " a photo from 1903 " and the comments say the photo was taken almost 80 years ago, so guessing that would make around 82/ 83. If anyone can provided the exact date and the name of the paper, please let me know, thanks. Geoff Langsworth - 0409551911.
18.01.2022 Recently posted a photo of the petrol bowsers outside of Berkin Motors which also showed a car with a Sun Tour sign on it's roof. Seems the Sun Tour annual cycling event passed through Edenhope in October 1972 and again in October 1973. Two articles published in the Kowree Advocate are attached to this post for our friends to enjoy. Cheers Geoff Langsworth - 0409551911.

13.01.2022 Tomorrow, Saturday 15th August 2020, marks the 75th Anniversary of the ending of World War Two in the Pacific, also known as Victoria in the Pacific or VP Day. The article below was published in the West Wimmera Advocate on 26th July 1995 reporting on the 50th Anniversary of the end of WW2. The plaque pictured is located at the Edenhope War Memorial on the corner of Elizabeth and Anzac Avenue Edenhope. This is an important event for all Australians and we should respect all... those men and women who fought for the freedom that all Australians enjoy today. Regards Geoff Langsworth 0409551911.
13.01.2022 Michael Galpin sent this photo through to me. Thank you so much. My brothers and I appreciate it. Our Dad, Tom Payne and Michael Galpin's brother Greg at Henley are in this photo.... many years ago. Gramps, Ted Payne built the bike as pointed out by my brother. "The chain tensioner is a give away" He made 1 for Michael Payne too; who coincidentally rode tandem in the Henley parade many decades later.
13.01.2022 Rex Matthews provided these two photos recently. Rex is President of the Heywood Wagon Shed and Museum and is a collector of bottles and demijohns from SW of Victoria and SE of South Australia. I believe the Brooksby family operated the Lake Wallace Hotel in Edenhope from around 1927 with the owner being Ted Heffernan. In 1932 ,the Lucy Hodge Brooksby took over ownership of the hotel and retained ownership until 1971/72 . Thanks Rex for sending the two photos - Cheers Geoff Langsworth - 0409551911.

12.01.2022 I have just learnt of the passing of Arnold " Rex " Harcourt on 11th July 2020. Rex was the co -author of the book " Cricket Walkabout ". An excellent story of the Australian Aboriginal Cricketers that toured England in 1868. The book was first published in 1988 and the story was written by John Mulvaney and Rex Harcourt. If you haven't already read this book, I would highly recommend it to you. I believe copies of the book are available at your local library. Regards Geoff Langsworth.

09.01.2022 ORCHARDS & DRIED FRUITS INDUSTRY - EDENHOPE. The following article was published in The Weekly Times dated Saturday 14th January 1928 regarding the dried fruit industry that commenced in the Edenhope district from around the early to mid 1920's. With the ending of World War One, the Closer Soldier Settlement Board was established and farming land was made available to returned soldiers. One of these properties was Kooyonga which was owned at the time by Samuel Ramsden. The... Kooyonga property was originally part of the Lake Wallace North property which had earlier been owned by Edward Hearne and was originally part of the Lake Wallace Pastoral property established by George and James Hope in 1845. Four successful applicants for the Soldier Settlement blocks were E.F.Narik , F.G.Thornton, F.C.Robertson and H.J.Riley. The attached article mentions hoe Mr E.F.Narik had established an orchard and commenced growing fruit such as prunes and apricots along with other fruits. Mr Charles Robertson and his four sons also established an orchard on their property and the dried fruit industry seemed to flourish. It has been hard to trace how long the orchards and the dried fruit industry existed for but it is believed it continued on until the mid 1960,s. Our Historical Society is keen to find out more about the dried fruit industry in our district and we encourage anyone who can provide information such as newspaper articles or photos, could they please contact Geoff Langsworth -0409551911 or email Geoff at [email protected] See more

07.01.2022 We recently posted two articles regarding the 1972 and 1973 Sun Tour annual cycling events passing through Edenhope. Well turns out the Sun Tour also passed through Edenhope in October 1971. Miss Kerry MacKenzie presented Graeme McVilly with a garland of flowers and a congratulatory kiss for winning the sprint into Edenhope. A copy of an article published in the Kowree Advocate dated 20-10-1971 is attached. A photo of Kerry and Graeme are attached.
06.01.2022 56 ELIZABETH STREET EDENHOPE. I am looking for information about the former businesses that operated at this location between August 1974 and March 1982. The Leehane family operated the Edenhope Fruit Market from January 1971 to August 1974. Prior to then, Frank Natoli conducted the Edenhope Fruit Market from August 1965 to January 1971.... In March 1982 , Austin and Jan Grigg opened Griggs Sports Store which I believe operated until late 1985 and then Power and Bennett Solicitors moved to that site in January 1986. They remained there until June 1994 before moving the former Westpac Bank site at 77 Elizabeth Street. In December 1998 a new business opened under the name of LifeStyle. So the information I am seeking is - what business operated at 56 Elizabeth Street between August 1974 to March 1982 and secondly what business operated at that site between June 1994 and December 1998 ? If anyone can provided any details , please post details here or contact Geoff Langsworth - 0409551911 or email [email protected] Happy Easter - Cheers, Geoff.

06.01.2022 DRESS SHOPS, FROCK SALONS IN EDENHOPE. Mrs Patricia Lowe opened a dress shop in Edenhope on Monday 5th April 1965. It was named " The Patrice " Frock Salon and was located in Elizabeth Street. As can be seen from the advertisement, the premises was formerly known as " The Pharmacy. " On Thursday 1st August 1968, Mrs Janice Adam announced the opening of her salon named Jans Frock Salon and was formerly known as The Patrice.... Not sure how long this shop operated for , but on 18-12-1968 Tania-Louise Frock Salon opened. This shop didn't appear to operate for very long as it closed in January 1970. Questions - does anyone know Tania- Louise;s surname and where the shop was located ? Prehaps it was formerly Jans Frock Salon ? On 11-01-1967, Mrs Audene Schmidt from Horsham opened " Audene's Boutique next to the National Bank in Elizabeth Street. Mrs Irene Neate was the Manageress of the shop. This shop closed down 23-07-1969. If anyone can supply any additional information regarding the above mentioned shops or their owners, please let me know. Cheers, Geoff Langsworth - 0409551911.

04.01.2022 The World War Two Memorial at Edenhope was unveiled at the Anzac Ceremony on 25th April 1990. Surprisingly there was no World War Two Memorial erected at Edenhope until the idea was suggested by the local branch President Mr Jim McDougall. His letter was published in the Kowree Advocate on 21st June 1989 suggesting that a memorial be erected to hono,r not only the WW2 men and women but also for those who served in Korea, Malaysia, Borneo and Vietnam and the various peacekee...ping forces in which Australia has been involved. The Kowree Shire agreed to support Jim McDougall's suggestion and the public were asked to submit the names of the men and women who enlisted. A final list of names was published in The Kowree Advocate on 25th October 1989 which is set out below. I believe we all should all be grateful to Mr Jim McDougall for his untiring efforts to honor all these men and women. Geoff Langsworth - 0409551911
