25.01.2022 Are you children SAFE on your farm? Children who live on farms are more likely to be injured or killed on the farm than their parents or other farm workers. Around 20 children under the age of 15 years die every year in Australia(1) as a result of farm injuries. Machinery, tractors, animals and water can all be dangerous for farm children. Keep young children away from dams, creeks, tanks, troughs, dips and channels because they are a major cause of toddler drownings on farms.... Young children need a safe play area of their own where there are no major hazards, so fencing part of the yard close to the house for your child’s use is important. Older children can be taught about farm safety, but still need to be supervised at all times. Most importantly, children learn by imitation. If you practice and value farm safety, so will your child. https://farmerhealth.org.au/2014/03/21/child-safety-on-farms Keeping Kids Safe on Farms [Video] Fast facts: Children who live on farms have a higher risk of injury or death than other children. Teach your children about safety from a young age. Talk to your child frequently about the safety rules of the farm. Provide fenced play areas for young children. Supervise older children when they work on the farm.

14.01.2022 National Skin Cancer Action Week 15-21 November, 2020 It’s still the same sun Each year Cancer Council Australia and the Australasian College of Dermatologists come together for National Skin Cancer Action Week. This is an important reminder to use sun protection and of the importance of early skin cancer detection for all Australians.... Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, including melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Every year in Australia skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers. Around 2000 people die from this disease every year. However, more than 95% of skin cancer cases are caused by unprotected exposure to UV radiation from the sun, meaning it is a nearly entirely preventable cancer. How to protect your skin from the sun Many Australians will remember the ‘Sid the Seagull’ campaign from the 1980s which launched the ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ message. Some things have changed since then but our sun is still the same. A lot of those Australians who first heard Sid’s message now have kids of their own. National Skin Cancer Action Week is the perfect opportunity to remind them of the importance of staying SunSmart, not just for themselves but for their kids as well. By using sun protection and preventing sunburn and skin damage you are reducing your risk of skin cancer including potentially deadly melanoma. Sun protection is recommended whenever UV levels reach 3 or higher. There are five simple things you can do to protect yourself and greatly reduce your risk of skin cancer. Slip on sun-protective clothing Slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go outdoors and reapply every two hours afterwards Slap on a broad-brim hat to protect your face, head, neck and ears. Seek shade Slide on sunglasses make sure they meet Australian standards A combination of the five measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes, are key. From the 1980s till today, Cancer Council has been front and centre in skin cancer prevention. As long as the sun shines on Australia, we won’t stop working with the help of our supporters to reduce skin cancer rates and save lives. We are calling on the Australian Government to invest $10million annually over two years in a mass media campaign to increase public awareness about skin cancer risk, sun protection and associated behaviour change. The time to stop cancer is before it starts. Let’s make the future cancer free.
