23.01.2022 Statement from EDFA and EDV regarding this week’s VCE Yr 12 Maths Exam [Image reads: This week, EDV and Eating Disorders Families Australia were alerted to the fact that the recent Yr 12 Further Maths exam contained questions that utilised themes around weight gain, BMI, body size, overweight and obesity. We know that this has been highly distressing for some students and parents. EDV and EDFA have written to James Merlino, the Minister for Education and Mental Health, a...nd Stephen Gniel, the CEO of VCAA, to express our deep concern and disappointment about this issue. It is very disheartening to think that students who may have found this content distressing may have had their performance in this exam negatively impacted. Even more concerning is that some students may have had their eating disorder recovery compromised. Victoria is currently experiencing a surge in eating disorder new presentations and relapses in young people due to the impacts of COVID-19. There is more need than ever to be sensitive around issues such as weight, size, shape or attaching any type of classification to a person based on BMI. EDV and EDFA have asked the Minister and Mr Gniel to ensure there are checks and balances in place at VCAA to ensure content like this does not make its way into future exams or curriculum. You can read the full letter on our website. https://edfa.org.au/unca/edfa-and-edv-response-to-vce-exam/

21.01.2022 Today 10/10/20 is World Mental Health Day & this week is Carer’s Week.... A reminder on #worldmentalhealthday2020 that EDFA was formed by Parents & Carers with Lived-Experience. No one 'gets it' like WE who have lived it! Families of people with mental illness are doing it tough too. Can you spare 3 minutes to watch this video please? It describes perfectly what parents, carers & siblings go through on a daily basis caring for someone with an eating disorder, which is a life...-threatening mental illness which takes years to beat & impacts the entire family unit. This beautiful Mum shows you what it is like & why we started EDFA. I am delighted to say that two years on from this video, her daughter is doing well & the family is recovering from the experience Sadly though, Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality of ALL mental illnesses (with up to 20% dying from suicide or organ failure if not effectively treated ) so it is particularly challenging & frightening for the unwell person AND the whole family. I invite you to support our volunteer organisation Eating Disorders Families Australia by following our page, letting others know of our service - we now have a ‘strive’ parent/carer support group in every state & territory of Australia or even making a small donation to help us continue our work supporting, educating & connecting families so they are not alone in this battle to save their loved one Thankyou #mentalhealthmonth #carers4carers #volunteers #livedexperiencesupport #peer2peersupport #passthebaton4eatingdisorders #nationalcarersweek2020 #worldmentalhealthday Australian Government Department of Health The Project @InsightSBS @ABC730 #eatingdisorders #eatingdisordercommunity #eatingdisordersupport #eatingdisorderrecovery #eatingdisorderawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #eatingdisordersupport #selfcare #parentsupport #edfam #edfamily #edrecoverycommunity See more
