16.01.2022 The following is a statement I have provided to the national media about the issue of people planning to travel to regional areas at the moment. It pains me to ...say it, but I hope people stay away from our little towns until this is over... If you dont live in regional Australia, and dont have a legitimate work reason to visit, please stay at home this Easter. A much-wanted holiday is not a good enough reason to risk spreading the coronavirus to new areas of our nation. For someone who has spent most of their working life encouraging city people to visit our regions and support local jobs it saddens me to tell them to stay away at the moment. You can still experience a little taste of country life by ordering your favourite wine, food and other products online but please dont visit until the authorities give the all clear. Although there is no shortage of food, we still have limited essential supplies in our supermarkets due to panic buying, and our health facilities are not designed to cope with a large increase in their caseloads. After experiencing droughts and bushfires, we dont need the extra pressure of large crowds potentially spreading the coronavirus to regions which have been largely untouched so far. My hometown of Lakes Entrance normally triples in size at Easter but we just dont have the services and tourism attractions open at the moment to care for thousands of visitors. The caravan parks, pubs, clubs and restaurants are all closed and locals are bunkering down to get through this challenge together. The best way to demonstrate your love for your favourite beachside villages and small country towns is to leave us alone until this crisis is over. Staying at home as much as possible, and helping to contain the virus, will save lives and get our nation back to normal faster. As country people, we look forward to welcoming back all of our city families and friends in the months ahead. Take care everyone. Be kind to each other and keep making good decisions.

15.01.2022 Day 1 of our long weekend! We travelled from West Gippsland to East Gippsland. Were staying at the wonderful Edgewater Terraces at Metung, Brian the owner was ...so accommodating and easy to deal with. Helped us navigate managing our duel jetskis, and our villa is super cute! We then went for a stroll to the Main Street and grabbed lunch at the Metung Bakery & Cafe. Back to the villa to hang out in the pool for a few hours before heading back into town for dinner at the (very busy) Metung Hotel! See more

06.01.2022 Good news, bad news, and a bit of a whinge, so bear with me! Imagine if the Monash Freeway was closed for more than three weeks? There would be hell to pay. So ...I can completely understand the anger and frustration for many locals with the prolonged closure of the highway. It has taken longer than is acceptable and we should be doing everything in our power as a community to make sure it never happens again. Transport operators, small business owners, residents and visitors are suffering massive economic and social costs because of the failure to maintain the road corridor to be more resilient to these types of natural disasters. As locals, we have argued for years to maintain a wider corridor with less large trees on the roadside verges, for the safety of road users and to make it easier to clear after storms and fires. The Princes Highway is the social and economic artery of life in Gippsland and its ongoing closure is severely hampering relief and recovery efforts. This is not a criticism of the teams working to clear the highway - thank you to the timber industry contractors, state government employees and ADF members who are working to clear the road. Im not blaming the work crews - just pointing out there shouldnt have been so much to clean up in the first place! Over to the good news... I drove from Orbost to Bemm River then on to Cann River today, with a permit, and the road has been cleared to a level I havent seen before. The road surface is largely in good condition and Im advised the Princes Highway is now open to the Bemm River turnoff. Please check the DELWP Gippsland FB page for further details but I have been told the highway will open to all traffic by the end of this weekend, and possibly sooner if final works to clear dangerous trees progress well, past Cann River. The Monaro Highway is still officially closed but locals have told me they have driven to Bombala in their personal vehicles and it shouldnt take anywhere near as long to clear as the Princes. Of course, I agree that safety must always come first, but there needs to be a greater sense of urgency among the decision-makers to get our major roads operating. And on a final note, the trees that have been felled should be salvaged by the timber industry for local mills or free firewood for locals, when its safe to do so. Theres a lot of trees on the ground and they will just burn in the next fire if we dont get the industry to clean them up. We would be better off getting properly equipped and trained firewood collectors to get wood for locals this year because its going to be unsafe in the bush for inexperienced collectors. Thanks everyone for your patience - mine has almost run out but at least the Princes Highway will be safer than it was before the fires. #lovegippsland
