25.01.2022 And true for horses as well

21.01.2022 FROSTED GRASS IS DANGEROUS- As the extremely cold weather is here and whilst managing my own ponies, I thought I would put up a post in the event some people ar...e unaware..... Frosted grass is more dangerous to foundered, fat cresty ponies and those prone to laminitic episodes than spring grass. You may think that grazing dead brown pasture is safe, unfortunately its not. It contains extremely high levels of sugar, especially when temperatures are below 6 degrees. The grass is so stressed so the sugars are stored in the stem as growth ceases. Keeping them off the grass and soaking hay is a much safer option, even if it is for a couple of months. Your pony will thank you and be much more comfortable See more

19.01.2022 More collecting yesterday. Came close to tears when we pulled all 4 hooves from a very large (old) draft horse out. First "OMG" at seeing the massive side bone. Then "Holy Sh**" when seeing what was left of the coffin bones! Will try to get more pics when they are cleaned up.

07.01.2022 Food for thought for those with laminitis prone ponies When my beautiful pony ,Nicky , passed away in July I was not the only one upset about her loss Her daug...hter, Chat , became very depressed They had always been together and though Chat was 10 and had her own foal they were very close Chat developed laminitis which I was unable to control Blood tests showed nothing and she remained on a daily dose of bute to control the pain , without it she could not even stand I ran out of options and was considering having her pts I was given the loan of a pony three weeks ago and everything changed They were paddocked together and bonded quickly Chat started to enjoy life again and the pain was reducing I gradually cut back the bute and now she has been without bute for a week with no pain Sometimes we need to look outside the box ! They now gallop around and are always together, even though I have other ponies here she did not have any that she wanted to spend time with Every morning I walk out and think she is going to be sore again but so far so good Hope this helps someone else Where there is life there is hope See more

06.01.2022 We often concentrate on keeping our horses warm in winter and forget about their skin health! It is even more important in winter to make sure that dead hair an skin debris is removed. An easy way to do this is by using a hessian rug that will help to lift dead hair etc away from the skin Added to that the natural properties of hessians and the sustainable nature of the raw product the hessian rug is a wise choice https://www.farmyardsaddlery.com.au/rugs/summer-rugs/

03.01.2022 Heritability of EMS in Horses By Dr. John Kohnke BVSc RDA Over the last 15 years, a number of studies have highlighted the symptoms, characteristics and underly...ing causes of Equine Metabolic Syndrome or EMS in horses and ponies. Most owners of larger breed Warmbloods and British Breed ponies, such as Welsh Mountain ponies, are aware of the good doer type animals that can put on weight very easily, especially if given 24/7 access to pasture or high sugar feeds and hay. Many owners also observe that these good doers have an increased risk of laminitis as they age. More recent studies have shown that the long term intake of soluble sugars and Non-Structural Carbohydrates (NSCs) in heat treated grains, certain pasture grasses, such as ryegrass, cocksfoot, fescues and even Kikuyu, can result in these animals developing high circulating blood insulin levels, now established as Insulin Resistance or IR. This syndrome is similar to Type 2 diabetes in older, overweight humans consuming a high carbohydrate-based diet in food and drinks. Many of these horses develop a cresty neck and tail-butt fat accumulation which increases the risk of EMS and IR related laminitis. Over recent years, grazing management to limit access to high sugar pastures and hays, especially overnight in high risk horses and ponies with a sedatory lifestyle and little regular training exercise, combined with soaking hay to leach-out excess soluble sugars, has provided the best management tool to minimise the risk of EMS-induced laminitis in horses. Many heavier horse and pony breeders have observed that certain breeds and bloodlines of high risk good doers also seem to have a higher risk of EMS and IR. The latest scientific studies have concluded that genetics may have an important influence and contribute to the risk of horses and ponies developing EMS as they age, even on well controlled diets. A recent review has been published in the prestigious Equine Veterinary Journal. Researchers Elaine Norton DVM, Dr. Molly McCue PhD and colleagues at the University of Minnesota College of Vet Medicine, have shown that in a largest ever population study investigating genetic links to EMS in 264 Welsh ponies and 286 Morgan horses, have highlighted these recognised good doer breeds as having up to an 80 % heritability of EMS, far higher than the 40 % previously suspected. Effective dietary management and an exercise plan can help to manage the risk of EMS in susceptible horses and ponies. For more information on EMS, Safe Grazing Management times and other handy hints to help manage your EMS, IR or overweight horse or pony, contact the friendly Kohnkes Own team via private message or email [email protected]
