24.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day, an opportunity for us to reflect upon our mental health and wellbeing. The past months have brought many challenges for everyo...ne, especially healthcare workers, emergency services personnel and for people with mental health conditions, many experiencing even greater social isolation than before. I encourage you to check in with yourself, your friends and colleagues during what is an incredibly challenging time - and listen, provide support and encourage action. 22.01.2022 Get to know your Brigade. We're profiling some of our volunteers. We're a diverse bunch, but what unites us is working together to serve the community in which we live. This week, Brigade Support Team (BST) member Thoa Nguyen How long have you been a member of the brigade and what prompted you to join? ... I have been a member for about 7 years and joined after migrating to Australia with my husband - because I have always looked for ways to help others. What is your role within the brigade? Brigade Support Team and marketing coordination. What’s been the best thing about being a CFA volunteer? What keeps you volunteering? It feels rewarding to help the community in their times of need or emergencies, but it also feels fulfilling to see the community gather together through events such as the Brigade’s annual Fun Run. What’s your most memorable moment from being a part of Edithvale Fire Brigade? It has been very memorable to introduce my family to become part of the larger brigade family, especially seeing our young son grow up around the station and fire trucks. What’s your occupation outside of EFB? Training resources coordinator Are you involved in any other community groups, or have any other interests/hobbies? My family are involved in other community groups through our son’s school, sports and recreation activities and I enjoy traveling and seeing new places.

22.01.2022 on Tuesday (3/11/2020), Edithvale CFA was responded to an air-conditioner on fire in Aspendale. Upon arrival, crews were confronted with a fire in the evaporative air-con unit that had spread into the roof of the single storey house. Fortunately, all occupants had already evacuated safely. Crews from Edithvale and Fire Rescue Victoria station 90 (Patterson River) entered, wearing Breathing Apparatus (BA), to conduct an internal attack. The fire was quickly contained and suppr...essed, but unfortunately, extensive damage to the property had already occurred. Due to the warm conditions, additional BA crews were requested from Patterson River Fire Brigade. Bayswater Fire Brigade-CFA BA Support was also called to provide on-site service of cylinders and sets. Crews were on-scene for quite some time, ensuring that all hotspots were fully extinguished, and assisted the occupants by retrieving belongings, documents, and pets (including a snake!) from the house. The occupants of the house reported that this was the first time they had used their evaporative air-conditioner after winter. This serves as a timely reminder heading into summer, to ensure cooling equipment is serviced, particularly after a long period of non-use. CFA (Country Fire Authority) #cfavic #WeWorkAsOne

16.01.2022 Edi Bear’s adventures saw him join Firefighter Matt and future Firefighter Mason at Edithvale Fish n Chips, a popular destination among EFB members due to its proximity to the station. Also, Firefighters Pete and Pete caught up with Edi Bear while shopping at Aspendale Gardens Shopping Centre. #communityfirestation

14.01.2022 Community Appreciation Week This weekend, Edithvale CFA members accompanied Edi Bear for a babyccino at SkinnyBoyJim cafe on Laura Street, Aspendale followed by a visit to Aspendale shops to get some snacks from the bakery. We also supported McHappy Day, Getting Big Macs all round. #communityfirestation

13.01.2022 Over the past weeks, Edithvale volunteers have been undertaking necessary skills maintenance training in preparation for the upcoming fire season. This has been made possible under an exemption from the Chief Health Officer for CFA volunteers to keep current with their ongoing training requirements. Each year all CFA firefighters must undertake mandatory bushfire safety skills maintenance, including a burn over drill, where crews activate our tanker’s crew protection system ...to shelter in the event of being overrun by fire. This training ensures that our volunteers are ready to respond to bushfires over the upcoming fire season, either within our local area or if deployed to support firefighting efforts elsewhere in the state. All members attending the fire station to undertake this training adhere to minimal crew numbers, have undertaken a COVID cleaning training package, and are supervised by a trained COVID coordinator. 11.01.2022 When our firefighters co-respond with Ambulance Victoria to cardiac arrests as part of the Emergency Medical Response (EMR) program, one of the best things we can find on arrival is bystanders performing effective CPR. Early CPR and defibrillation is a vital link in the chain of survival for critically ill patients. October is "Shocktober", and Ambulance Victoria is urging Victorians to learn CPR and locate your nearest available AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). Next Thursday 15 October, join paramedic Mike who will be live-streaming a CPR and AED demonstration. RSVP to the event to register.

08.01.2022 Edithvale CFA is back training in a COVID Safe manner and within an exemption provided by the Chief Health Officer. Captain Graham Fountain said "we are delighted to be able to recommence training and hone our skills ahead of the forthcoming summer bushfire season. We are also delighted to be able to finally commence training for our 30+ new recruits that have been patiently waiting for this opportunity whilst undertaking online training during the lockdown. Whilst we can'...t yet recommence our full training regime, the community may see us out and about but rest assured it will be in compliance with our COVIDsafe Plan and under the supervision of specially trained COVIDsafe Coordinators." 06.01.2022 A couple of days ago, I received a phone call regarding a little boy who lives in our local area. Without going into any detail, I heard 2 things about Rafael, ...who is four and a half, he loves Emergency Service vehicles, and the other thing I learned, is that Rafael is doing it pretty tough at the moment, and really, that was all we needed to hear. A couple of quick phone calls to our local mates, and a plan was hatched. So today, Raf and his Dad Rob and little sister Scarlett, arrived at the Chelsea SES HQ, to find not only SES trucks ready to be explored, but also an Edithvale CFA Fire engine, a Coast Guard vessel and truck and members from Chelsea Police, Moorabbin Highway Patrol, the Police Critical Incident Response Team from the city, the Chelsea Police all-terrain vehicle and an amazing low level fly over by the Police Air Wing, who knew that the Police Helicopter had a siren; and all on hand to try to lift Raf’s spirits for just an hour or so, and hopefully, provide a smile and some fun memories for a great and brave little boy. We also thought it would be good for him to take a few memories home with him including a Paddy Platypus SES Bear, a Chelsea SES Rescue Truck lunch box, a mini Chainsaw, and an official SES cap and an SES bear for Scarlett. A CFA Bear, and Fireman’s Helmet, and a VICPOL, Constable T Bear and Police cap. Raf was also made an honorary Police member at Chelsea, including getting his Sergeants stripes. After a ride in the Highway Patrol car and the Police all terrain vehicle, with lights flashing and sirens blaring, and getting to know the guys and girls, it was time for pictures, to make sure that no memories of the day went by without being covered. I want to thank the Chelsea SES members, Edithvale CFA members, Carrum Coast Guard members, and VICPOL members from Chelsea Police Station, the city and the air wing, who made the day possible. Also, a massive special thank you to Caitlan Milner, the owner of Sundaebake, for donating stacks of fabulous cupcakes for everyone on the day, including a special presentation pack for Rob and Raf to take home to share with the rest of the family. We truly hope you had fun Raf. You have all of the attributes of a good volunteer, you are tough, you are brave, and you have a wonderful heart. Thank you for visiting with us today, and please feel free to come back anytime you like. It's a big post, but you will not be sorry when you see this young man's happy face! Special big thank you to Kristy, the young lady whose phone call started it all. #WeWorkAsOne See more

05.01.2022 Get to know your Brigade. Over the coming weeks, we're profiling some of our volunteers. We're a diverse bunch, but what unites us is working together to serve the community in which we live. This week, Firefighter Patrick Hughes How long have you been a member of the brigade and what prompted you to join? ... I have been a member for about 18 years and joined after a letter drop because I thought it would be a good way to develop new skills and meet new people while helping the local community. What is your role within the brigade? Operational firefighter and volunteer instructor. What’s been the best thing about being a CFA volunteer? What keeps you volunteering? It feels rewarding to help the community in their times of need or emergencies, but it also feels fulfilling to see the community gather together through events such as the Brigade’s annual Fun Run. What’s your occupation outside of EFB? Primary School teacher. What’s your most memorable moment from being a part of Edithvale Fire Brigade? It has been very memorable to introduce my family to become part of the larger brigade family, especially seeing our young son grow up around the station and fire trucks.

03.01.2022 During the months of September and October, firefighters from Edithvale have been participating in this year's virtual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb. They have been collectively climbing one million steps to raise vital funds for mental health support services, an area close to the hearts of many emergency responders and the community at large. There is still time to contribute, with the challenge coming to an end on October 10. If you wish to support them in their climbs, visit https://www.firefighterclimb.org.au/station/cfa/edithvale/ Pictured are Firefighters Jaz and John climbing staircases at their local parks, during their outdoor exercise time.

02.01.2022 Community Appreciation Week - Day 2: Edi Bear's adventure continued today in Edithvale, visiting THE CROWDED HOUR for a brekkie burger with Lieutenant Siobhan before dropping into her hairdresser at Beach Hair razor Salon. Edithvale for a quick grooming. #communityfirestation

01.01.2022 Last week, Edithvale firefighters Dan and Nathan spoke to the kids at Edithvale Primary School as part of their ‘Community Week’ learning. Although our in-person school and fire station visits are on hold for now, Dan and Nathan joined the classes over video conference, and spoke about Edithvale Fire Brigade, fire trucks, fire safety, and answered plenty of great questions from the kids. After the session, we received some fantastic thank you notes from the classes. Just so...me of them are below. If you are part of an organisation or community group or know of a community group, that would benefit from a presentation like this, please contact us on [email protected] and we can organise a session that would suit your needs. 01.01.2022 We appreciate our community, so it’s EFB Community Appreciation Week. As part of its multidimensional community engagement strategy, Edithvale CFA are celebrating our local Community Appreciation Week and giving back to our local businesses following the easing of Covid restrictions. "Edi Bear" will be out and about this week with members of the brigade supporting the local community and businesses. Yesterday afternoon Edi Bear visited Buxton Real Estate - Chelsea, our major ...fun run sponsor for the past several years, with Firefighter Bek. Buxton is assisting Bek with property management for her investment property in Edithvale. This is the way we give back to those that support us. CFA (Country Fire Authority) #communityfirebrigade
