25.01.2022 What a fantastic way for the children of the St. Albans Homework Club to celebrate the end of 2017. A group of children from the Homework Club enjoyed a trip to the Ballarat Wildlife Park where they engaged in a great day of animal exhibitions and a trip to the local park. A big thank you to Brother Trevor for his assistance, St Patrick’s College and their tutors for facilitating and supporting the days’ activities.

24.01.2022 Today marks the first day of the 2016 Spring Family Camp! Here is a snapshot of the families and volunteers enjoying the lovely spring sunshine. We look forward to hearing about their adventures throughout the week.

24.01.2022 A NEW START AT ST ALBANS ERCRS Yesterday the Edmund Rice Tutoring and Learning Club for students of refugee background started again for 2017, in its fourth St Albans location. Br Chris Meehl began the tutoring in the heritage-listed Uniting Church Hall in 2002. In 2010 it moved to the Brimbank Council's Errington Centre. When this was demolished in 2015, operations continued in the nearby demountable erected by the Council. The new and best site is the recently finished St ...Albans Community Centre. ERC RS had input into the design. On the first evening for 2017, about 30+ primary school students were present along with groups of Adult tutors and peer tutors from St Patrick’s College Ballarat, Parade College Bundoora, and Penleigh & Essendon Grammar. It was also a new beginning for the centre as it welcomes Gudrun Philipp on the same day as its new Coordinator. Gudrun also coordinates the Brighter Tomorrow Boys Mentoring group. She comes with vast experience in the sector. She will add value to the great work put in place by many before her. Coincidently or not, all this was witnessed first-hand by one of great contributors to what the centre is today, Br. Sean McManus. It was good to see him around connecting the dots in the proud history of ERCRS. Photos below from top left: Br. Terry in action, Gudrun talking to students, Br. Sean with St Pat boys, Br. John in the new kitchen, New building and PEGS students after session. See more

23.01.2022 Our visit to the wonderful Summer exhibition at National Gallery of Victoria in January, entitled 'Triennial', was a wonderful experience! The children explored creative ways to make carpets from pegs, rope and other materials, visited a beautiful flower-encased room, had fun with virtual reality, and took in all the awe-inspiring art works of the Gallery. The day inspired young imaginations and the children are more than eager for another visit soon!

22.01.2022 On Tuesday the 19th of September, a number of enthusiastic volunteers (myself included) assisted staff and Primary Homework club students with an exciting excursion to the Wyndham Leisure and Aquatic Centre. With an array of different pools, big waterslides, and a pool playground, students were presented with countless opportunities to engage in fun activities. Whether they were making friends with regular patrons or pushing their boundaries in attempting the scary waterslide...s, all the students made the most of this enjoyable opportunity and were an absolute pleasure to not only look after but to also be around. The fun and games were topped off with a well-earned feed provided by the lovely staff (ensuring there was enough for seconds and thirds for the hungry students!) and was a great way of kicking off the school holidays! 10.01.2022 Celebrating 80 years!!! Not often does it happen, but when it does it is a cause for great celebration. Last Wednesday at a special lunch, the ERCRS St Alban’s staff marked the occasion of the 80th birthday of one of our staff: Br Trevor Gibbons. The lunch was the vehicle to not only thank Trevor for his ever-faithful commitment to our programs, but also to acknowledge his many years of generous work with Aboriginal students in Broome, his work in the Cook Islands, Yambio and... in PNG. A missionary for most of his teaching life, Trevor has a great love for life revealing itself in his passion for camping, cycling, gym work-outs and his scientist mind that keeps him open to new ideas and discoveries. But it is his genuine interest in people- the staff, students and volunteers that we at St Albans/Sunshine have come to know and appreciate Trevor the best. Well Done and thanks, Trevor!! To help the students get to know their new tutors better, the Sunshine Harvester Homework Club spent the first week of term in 2017 conducting a slime experiment. 06.01.2022 YOUTH ON THE AIRWAVES Some Brighter Tomorrow Boy's Group members did a great job discussing a range of youth-related issues on SYN FM's radio program 'Youth and Loud' recently. Well done boys! https://omny.fm//youth-and-/youth-from-refugee-backgrounds

05.01.2022 Reflection from Graduate of ERCRS Brighter Tomorrow Boys Group 16 years old Zalalem is originally from Ethiopia. He migrated to Australia with his parents six years ago. Last years he became one of the first students to join Brighter Tomorrow Boys Mentoring program. Zalalm did very well within the group. He demonstrated leadership quality and self-drive. After he graduated from the program, Zalalem is start volunteering with Brighter Tomorrow as assistance Coach. Below is hi...s reflection; Through my volunteering at Edmund Rice Refugee Services ‘Brighter Tomorrow Boys’, which has a partnership with Melbourne Victory Football Club, a coordinator named Kaitlyn Krahe helped me arrange a week’s work experience at Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park. During the week of work experience at Melbourne Victory, I got the opportunity to meet not only professional football players and coaches, but also professionals in a wide range of roles. These ranged from executives and financial and administrative individuals, through to secretarial employees and various managers of different club positions. While at work there, I learnt about the roles and qualities that each person brought to the club. I also came to appreciate how many different types of professions are essential to running a high level football club like Melbourne Victory. As an example of a task I was given, I helped to find a rental house for a newly contracted international player named Alan Baro. To do this I started by doing a search online following the guidelines I was given. In my short time there, I had many positive experiences, but the stand-out favourite was learning from the financial manager about how the club’s money is organised. The most important lesson regarding money flow was the point made that to run a profitable company, the key is to ensure that overall income is higher than gross expenditure. It was an enormously educational experience, and I was privileged to have been given this opportunity to be involved with so many talented and friendly individuals. For my second work experience, I worked at Myer Melbourne in the CBD. I was positioned in Men’s and Youth’s formal wear, and undertook tasks such as direct customer service and interaction, movement of stock, as well as intricate training on how to take suit and shirt measurements. Over the course of the week, my inbuilt skills were brought to my attention, these included fast and efficient working and taking detailed instructions. I was recommended to apply for a Christmas casual position by my team leader due to my excellent performance, and I have recently submitted my application. Overall this was an amazing experience that I look forward to building on. Zalalem ERCRS wish him the very best in the years to come.

04.01.2022 ERCRS Brighter Tomorrow Boys Team Building day On the sunny morning of Saturday the 20th of February, the ERCRS Brighter Tomorrow Boys Mentoring Group traveled to Amberley Edmund Rice Centre to participate in a day of team building activities and fun together. The focus of the day was on how great things can be achieved when a group of individuals can communicate effectively and work collaboratively to conquer difficult tasks such as the Rope Swing, Spider Web, Marble & Pipe ...and Log Crossing activities. The mentees saw through trial and error how important listening, taking turns in being the leader and encouraging others are integral to success. One highlight was working together to fit 10 mentees and 10 mentors onto the Rope Swing platform without falling off! We finished off the day by cooling off in the pool and playing soccer. Thank you to Anthony Cocomazzo and Amberley Edmund Rice Centre for kindly providing the BTBG mentees with this great opportunity. By Kaitlyn Krahe

04.01.2022 In spring of 2017, we left St. Albans far behind and headed to Anglesea for the Brighter Tomorrow Boys Group Camp. Blessed with three days of sunshine, the boys spent the trip beach-hopping, playing soccer, sitting around campfires, canoeing and swimming in the ocean. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the camp, which would not be possible without the support of our amazing volunteers.
