22.01.2022 Its our last Friday together at Educaring Fdc in Palm Beach. The Educaring Fdc is relocating to Elanora, five minutes drive from our current location, its very exciting!!! This morning, the Friday Group looked at the new place photos and together, we started planning how we are going to set it up. Lots of amazing ideias coming from my beautiful girls As we all shared plenty of amazing times at the Palm Beach Educaring Fdc, we decided to take with us a piece of this magical place. We picked our favourite stone from the garden and turned it into a beautiful necklace to keep it forever!. We will certainly do. #fdc #familydaycareaustralia #fdcideas #eylf #greatmemories #educaring #natureplay #forestschool #frienships @ Educaring Family Day Care

17.01.2022 The benefits of risky play. Risky play involves kids experimenting and pushing themselves to figure out what will happen, without knowing the exact outcome. If kids dont go far enough with their play, its boring and if they go too far, it gets too scary, Brussoni explains. She likens it to a science experiment, where kids are testing out their environment and determining what theyre comfortable with. When we have kids engage in play, its really a fundamental way for them... to figure out the world how the world works, how their body works, says Brussoni, adding that these little experiments are all done in context of a relatively safe space. Risky play in early childhood can help develop a childs self-confidence, resilience, executive functioning abilities and even risk-management skills. And Brussonis work in injury prevention research shows that engaging in risky play can actually reduce the risk of injury, too. https://www.cbc.ca//risky-play-for-children-why-we-should-. #fdc #familydaycareaustralia #earlychildhoodeducation #eylf #earlychildhoodmemories #letthechildrenplay

15.01.2022 Why do some children CHEW everything? I have chatted to lots of teachers this week who have a few little people who are chewing absolutely everything.......so I... thought I would share this post again. I have done lots and lots of classroom observations of late - which involved seeing about 5 children in each class chewing something and often hearing teachers say "take that out of your mouth"....... here is some info as to why kids chew and how we can replicate this sensation for them rather than trying to take it off them. They aren't doing it to tick you off or to ruin their clothes or their toys....... they are doing it for good reason Adults I know bite their fingernails, chew pens, chew gum/ mints etc when they are needing to calm or maybe needing to stay alert enough to concentrate..... the children I see are just the same - they just havent found the most socially acceptable ways to do it yet and hence they chew their shirt collars, hat cords, on every toy, on the skin around their fingers etc. The mouth has many sensory receptors: for taste, texture, temperature, wetness and dryness, movement and so on. The information from these receptors is sent to the brain, which organises and processes the information. When a child has difficulty processing their senses they typically seek, or avoid, certain sensations around the lips, tongue, and mouth. Some children chew on clothing, pencils and other inappropriate objects to receive the sensory regulation they need to keep calm and or/ alert enough to stay focussed so they can take in new information or try new experiences. They are usually seeking tactile and proprioceptive input through their mouths. IDEAS TO TRY - Vibrating facial jigglers or Z-vibes are vibrating tools that are great for offering more intense input to children's mouths and jaw for those that like to chew LOTS! - Offer chewable jewellery and other items. You don't necessarily need to use a food substance to address the desire for chewing or biting. There are many chewable necklaces and bracelets available these days, as well as Pencil Toppers so the child can chew that instead of the pencil itself. - Offer chewy/ crunchy foods and/or sour foods. These give strong input to proprioception receptors around the mouth and can be helpful in preventing licking and biting. If the child's system can handle the sugar and artificial colours or flavours, you can try giving them chewing gum, liquorice, gummybears, starbursts, redskins, minties, fantales or similar chewy lollies (this is not where I would start for the trying of ideas but I have seen it work for some of my teenagers at school) - Other chewy foods include dried fruit or sugarless gum. Sour foods that can satisfy oral needs include lemons, limes, and pickled vegetables. - offer resistive blowing - such as blowing pom pom through a straw, blowing bubbles, playing bubble mountain (tubing in a bucket of detergent and blowing until the bubbles rise), whistles that require sustained breath etc. If done regularly these activities cannot only be super calming but may reduce some chewing. Sufficient sensory regulation strategies may prevent oral sensory seeking behaviours by reducing the child's sensory discomfort overall. Consider whole body deep pressure or joint compressions throughout the day. This can be seen decrease the need for such intense proprioception at the jaw/ mouth area. - - Crunchy foods wake us up because we have to work harder to consume them, and that satisfying crunch engages the ears as well. The more senses involved in eating; the more likely we are to become more alert. E.g. apples, muesli bars, dark chocolate and nuts. - Ensure you address other sensory issues that are affecting your child. By all means, redirect the child to lick, chew, or bite appropriate items, but note that these behaviours often get worse when the child is anxious or frustrated by other sensory challenges. Just as you might find it comforting to chew gum or your fingernails when you are nervous, you may not have a strong desire to do so when you are feeling calm and focused. - Is your child hungry or do they have a nutritional deficiency? Sometimes, oral/motor sensory seeking is related to being hungry or having a nutritional deficiency. If the sensory seeking persists, consider getting nutrition review to assess whether the child is getting all his nutritional needs met or if supplementation is required. - Giving the child a warm bath with Epsom salts a few days in a row, which causes the body to absorb some magnesium has been seen to reduce oral sensory seeking behaviours in some children and is low-cost, safe, and easy to try. If you think your child needs more professional support make a referral to an OT who specialises in this area for a full assessment.

13.01.2022 We have been investigating and playing with real tools for quite a while now, and often parents get surprised how skilled their children are when they get to see the videos I daily send to families, showing some learning experiences and free play we experience here at Educaring. I like to introduce one tool at a time. I let the children examine it, notice the sharp or pointed or heavy parts of it; I prefer to let them practise holding it safely first with me and them by thems...elves; we chat a lot, imagine how we can use those tool, we share what we have seen and how people we know use them; the children always ask lots of questions as you can imagine, and the chat its endless. After that, I like to show the children how I use the tools myself and how I handle it safely. We talk about where we use it and how we carry it around. Its also the time where though real and honest conversation, we establish the rules together. There is plenty of learning here and collaboration for sure. When children get the opportunity to be an active participant in their own learning process and feel that they are trusted with tools, it immediately boosts their self-esteem, self-confidence, motor skills, concentration, reasoning and much more. Learning how to use real tools gives children immense pride and satisfaction. As adults, we can share in their sense of accomplishment knowing that, by allowing them to take these risks, we are expecting them to succeed rather than assuming they will fail. See more
