25.01.2022 There were many amazing different energies at Guildford KIN Village today. There was so much excitement to be here. Today was a day where creations happened. We relaxed as we created an epic hammock hotel. There was also an amazing beach hut made with fallen bark. Critters were made with wood and nails. We watched flocked of white cockatoos and even found a prawn. We went on an adventure leaving trail trail markers towards treasure. Then teamed up for a huge game of capture the flag. Everyone should sleep well tonight!

24.01.2022 At the end of each program we send a short survey home to all the families. This survey attempts to gain insight into the elements of our school holiday that the kids most enjoy and the areas we can make improvements on. We also ask the question ‘what do you see as the main outcome for enrolling your child in our program?’. We love that the responses we get are so closely intertwined with our core values, philosophy and passion here at Educated by Nature! Bookings are open now for January - book your child’s space at www.educatedbynature.com/kinvillage

23.01.2022 The bliss of a day spent outside with like minded friends. Everyone seemed to get the memo that today was about chillin, catching up up with old friends and making new ones. Don’t think we weren’t mortal enemjes when it came to capture the flag though. Can’t wait to see you all again KIN friends.

21.01.2022 What better way to develop core muscle strength, than trying to balance on a home-made raft. Sitting or standing on a rickety piece of wood, with waves and ripples beneath you and a friend rocking you from side to side. This is nature's occupational therapy studio helping children gain control of their natural movement, coordination and strength. KIN Village January is open for booking NOW! These holidays, for KIN Village Summer, we will be focusing on rafts and cubbies - enc...ouraging muscle development and balance through play. Crawley has sold out - but Guildford still has spaces available! Get in quick to secure your child's place. 20.01.2022 Bush Inventors Club Homeschool was the perfect place to be on this scorcher of a day! We enjoyed a warm morning by the sparkling river building rafts and searching for sneaky crabs hiding in the water. Our community embodied the epitome of cooperation and care by sharing two rafts and ferrying each other around. The friendships that have grown between the participants that join us on Tuesday morning are testament to the wonderful community members they are becoming. It has be...en awesome to see so many participants testing their limits and building new creations. Children that hunt for crabs together, water fight together, climb trees together and play together, stay together. #bushinventorsclub #educatedbynature #natureconnection #natureplay #afterschool #getoutdoors #mentoring #tinkering #tools #lostskills #carpentry #Perth #nature #kidsinperth

20.01.2022 Our KIN Village teams are made up of passionate Playworkers... what do Playworkers do we hear you ask? We aim to provide a play environment in which children will laugh and cry; where they can explore and experiment; where they can create and destroy; where they can achieve; where they can feel excited and elated; where they may sometimes be bored and frustrated, and may sometimes hurt themselves; where they can get help, support, and encouragement from others when they requ...ire it; where they can grow to be independent and self-reliant; where they can learnin the widest possible senseabout themselves, about others, and about the world." 18.01.2022 Trudi and Daniel are thrilled to be involved with the 2021 Creative Schools Program! Delivered by FORM, this program places Creative Practitioners with classroom teachers in schools across Perth to co-create 16 weeks worth of mind blowing opportunities for learning outside the box. With a focus on 5 Creative Habits of Learning, The features of High Functioning Classrooms and with permission to challenge the status quo, the program aims to flip learning on its head and bring f...ocus back to teaching for creativity. Trudi and Daniel were invited to co-develop some of the training for the Teachers and Creative Practitioners in the program this year and spent two days at the end of last term facilitating workshops down by the river. In term 2, the projects kick off so keep an eye out for stories of the work that follows. For stories, case studies and reflective blogs from last year's program check out this link. https://creativeschools.com.au/blog Creative schools, 2021. Photograph by Taryn Hays, courtesy of FORM.

17.01.2022 So wonderful to be at Scotch College this morning for their public Saturday Bush School Open Day! A chance to celebrate all the amazing benefits to getting kids outside and connected to nature as a part of their learning journey.

17.01.2022 The clever team over at Perth Children's Occupational Therapy have posted this before, and we’ve shared it on because the message is SO important! So, we wanted to share it again too! The push down of skills and academic pressures continues in many educational settings and it’s with messages such as this one that we need to continue to support parents and educators to realise there are very specific stages that children need to progress through before they are ready to write...! Play, play, play, especially in outdoor settings, that is what our young children need to help them develop the muscle strength, dexterity, control and precision needed to write - when they are ready! This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are prewriting patterns, with the average (not prescribed) age at which children are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as visual motor integration. Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better. 16.01.2022 KIN Village school holiday programs are a favourite for so many reasons...! Bookings are now open for January - secure your child's space today at www.educatedbynature.com/kinvillage

15.01.2022 Did your kids come to KIN Village over the last two weeks? Are any of these objects missing from their bags? Email us at [email protected] if they belong to you.

12.01.2022 We found that the environment had changed a lot in the bushland for Hamilton Hill at KIN Village yesterday. This challenged us to find new cubby spaces and design bases in different ways. We learnt how trees changed over summer and how thirst affects trees, we learnt about the affect of fire and termites on wood and how people using the bush in different ways can affect the health of spaces.

12.01.2022 What a great day to be back at Guildford for KIN Village. It was a day for the most fantastic cubbies with the best views! We even had a hotel and bucket communication system with wooden pencils and bark. It was also a day for making new friends. When a group of girls were asked if they could take someone into their team, they replied There is always space for new friends! This is why we love KIN Village!

10.01.2022 Only 6 spaces left for Bush Inventors’ Club for this term at Crawley. All of our other locations are now sold out! We start next Tuesday!!! 3.45pm!

09.01.2022 Bookings for KIN Village Winter open today! KIN Village is a ‘drop and leave’ school holiday program for 6-12 year olds, that allows children to freely explore their world and community with the support of Nature Educators and Mentors. Each session runs from 9am to 4pm and costs $83 per child. This cost includes morning tea. We have an average staff to child ratio of 1:8. All staff have a Working with Children Check, with at least two staff at each session being first aid... trained and at least one with water rescue qualifications (where applicable). These holidays, for KIN Village Winter, we will be focusing on fire! No two days at KIN Village are the same, but typically they range from learning how to use a fire steel and cooking a sausage on a stick, to creating cosy cubbies and hammocks to shelter in with friends. 09.01.2022 Reading to your kids... even if they can already read... is such an important part of childhood. All you have to do is this: Read to your child. Even if they already know how to read to themselves. Because research shows reading aloud is the powerful keystone habit that will raise smart, kind kids.

09.01.2022 This morning I was amazed to see an Osprey pair hunting together at the beach in the territory of a Nankeen Kestrel that my husband and I like to watch. Sometimes I wonder if I have got the name of a bird right and haven’t confused it with something else, like a juvenile sea eagle. I spent some time opening my awareness to concentrate on the shape and colours of the birds. What colour is its beak, how many ‘fingers’ does it have at the tip of its wing, what shape is its tail..., what colour is its neck, what colour are the talons, what sounds does it make and when do all the small birds around stay silent and start singing again. This information helps me to double check its name in a field guide app later. Names are important as it communicates value. When we call our friends and acquaintances by name we communicate that we value them. It is the same with nature, we can communicate how much we value nature by the effort we put into learning and remembering names. When we call a bird by name we can feel closer and more connected to that bird. My next challenge is to see if I can learn how to tell a male and female apart. ^Trudi Photo credit: Gary Morris

09.01.2022 Hamilton Hill KIN Village is all about developing bases. Some bases are for peace, some are girls or boys only, some are for adventure and enterprise and others are for war. This week at Wednesday’s KIN, one the peaceful base decided to setup a ‘dagger’ shop and created a whittling production line. Swords were also built and a hectic game of Capture the Flag helped to give energy and community purpose to the play. #KINVillage #connectionmentoring #community #perth #perthschoolholidays #educatedbynature #nature #natureconnection #artofmentoring #mentoring #natureplay #kidsinperth

08.01.2022 Opening up a dialogue, shining a light on an important issue!

08.01.2022 "Children who are allowed the space to be still and permitted to direct their own lives with respect are mindful because it is totally compatible with healthy brain development and growth." Maggie Dent KIN Village provides children the chance to reset their minds and hearts after a busy school year. January is open for booking NOW! These holidays, for KIN Village Summer, we will be focusing on rafts and cubbies. Rafts provide the opportunity for joy and a release of energy..., whereas cubbies provide calmness and rest. Crawley has sold out - but Guildford still has spaces available! Get in quick to secure your child's place. 07.01.2022 How very Australian!!! Love it.

06.01.2022 A very important part of the Educated by Nature kitbag is the humble hut (cubby, fort, den, hide-out it goes by many names). As Nature Connection Mentors we see the multi-faceted role of a cubby and its ability to connect children, build community, inspire creativity and be a platform for real play. In this weeks episode of Campfire Conversations, Daniel and Trudi share their excitement for cubbies and the inspiration they take from Professor David Sobel and his 7 Nature Design Principles. Listen to the full episode here: anchor.fm/exn, or search for 'Educated by Nature' on any podcast app.

06.01.2022 Celebrating success and achievement comes naturally in our task-oriented society. We feel pride when we complete a challenge, overcome adversity or master a skill. However, we often need reminders about the importance of acknowledging the process and celebrating when things don’t go quite to plan, but we continue on anyway. Our tag line at Educated by Nature is, ‘Resilience through Connection’. We strive to support children (and adults) develop resilience as a core skill tha...t supports us when things don’t go as planned. One way we do this is by celebrating and honouring failure. In this weeks episode of Campfire Conversations, Daniel (Co-founder of Educated by Nature) and Nadia Robinson (Nature Playworker) discuss the importance of supporting children to persevere through tough times. They consider how adults working with children are able to support children in these moments, rather than rescuing them when the going gets tough. When adults sit with children in those uncomfortable feelings and use language that honours the process or acknowledges frustration, we build the child’s capacity to persist and not give up. 05.01.2022 Yesterday’s KIN Village at Crawley saw tribes develop and booby traps were created. A friendly competition over the most successful trap took place and this water based trip wire took out the win! Trudi, Jack and Daniel all fell victim to this ingenious invention and we absolutely love the joy these forms of play bring. Not to mention the team camaraderie! So many new friends were made!

05.01.2022 Come and see the new insect we’ve found! We’ve never seen one before! I wonder if you’ve discovered a new species? The kids spotted this insect recently during Bush Inventors’ Club at our Crawley location. They weren’t sure what it was called and we didn’t know either so they named it the ‘Leaf Winged Moth’. #bushinventorsclub #educatedbynature #natureconnection #natureplay #afterschool #getoutdoors #coyotementoring #wildernessawareness #Perth #nature #kidsinperth

04.01.2022 Did you know that spending 10 minutes a day in the sunshine can increase your vitamin D levels which can have a positive impact on your overall health and wellb...eing? Vitamin D is known for its natural superpowers of helping our bodies fight disease, reduce depression and even boost weight loss. You can still improve your vitamin D levels while practising sun smart guidelines so don’t forget to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide when going out into the sunshine! 04.01.2022 Back out at Boshack today facilitating a camp for Regent College and we are so grateful to get to work in this stunning environment. Driving into Boshack is instantly regenerative. This land holds us, supports us mentally and physically and we feel so fortunate to get to work out here!

04.01.2022 Today was a day of wonders, natural and created. Every single clamp in the clamps box was busy being a third hand and all the saws were put to work. The community at KIN Village autumn today each found their arena for success, some quite literally as they built an arena of hammocks in the cubby space. We were also greeted by dolphins when we adventured to the greatest climbing tree in Crawley, but they escaped our cameras. Today reminded us why we do what we do, to adventure, explore and wonder at the awesome world around us.

04.01.2022 We wrapped up KIN Village for Spring on Friday and we have to say, we had two weeks of glorious fun, nature and play! Here are a handful more photos from last week!

04.01.2022 "If young children can feel comfortable moving back and forth between self and animal, between indoors and outdoors, then those pathways are easier to follow later in life. The simple act of play naturally wears the paths into the landscape." - David Sobel

03.01.2022 Someone mentioned ‘Bird Box’ at Armadale Girl Guides for our Tinkering Zone this evening, and that idea rippled through the imagination of the group. We even had a ‘Bird Boat’ with its own parkour course. #girlguideswa #incursionsperth #tinkering

02.01.2022 In this weeks episode of Campfire Conversations, Trudi and Daniel discuss why FIRE is one of their key passions and an important aspect of Educated by Nature programs. Listen to the full episode here: anchor.fm/exn, or search for 'Educated by Nature' on any podcast app.

02.01.2022 "Be thankful for what you have, you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never ever have enough." - Oprah Winfrey

02.01.2022 Persistence!!! This Bush Inventor has been working hard for the last couple of weeks on making a ‘wooden water bottle’ using drills, augers, files and sand paper to carve out and smooth off this block of wood to hold water. He’s so proud of his work!
