13.01.2022 Im pleased the Berejiklian Government is finally promising some help for international students. They have acknowledged NSW Labor was right to pursue it - and ...that its in our economic and national nterest. However the package is not only very late but narrowly focused on 15% of international student accommodation. We also need to address the serious hardship faced by temporary visa workers and students who have lost their livelihoods, are ineligible for both Jobkeeper and Jobseeker and relying on charity for food.
11.01.2022 Tami was 25 years old when she came to Australia on a student visa. She met John through her work and they soon commenced a relationship. John proposed to her w...hile she was pregnant and they got married before their baby was born. John turned violent towards her while she was pregnant, controlling her financially and emotionally. The violence kept increasing and soon turned into physical and sexual assaults. Due to her temporary (student) visa status, she could not access public housing. She had no income and was also ineligible for Centrelink payments due to her visa status, making it impossible for her to afford private accommodation. She considered going back to her home country but was told that she could not take her child out of the country without permission from John, an Australian citizen. John refused to let her leave the country with their baby. Tami was stranded between a tough choice of either leaving the country without her baby or going back to her violent partner. What do you think she chose? She went back to John. 04.01.2022 NSW GOVERNMENT SUPPORTING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS THROUGH COVID-19 Following an announcement by the NSW Government on Friday 15 May 2020, please find information... below about support for International Students during COVID-19. The NSW Government will fund temporary crisis accommodation for stranded international students as part of a $20 million package protecting the vulnerable and maintaining the States track record as a leading global study destination. Thousands of families around the State depend on the sector whether through direct employment, homestays or other services. The package includes a temporary housing scheme, targeted at students in genuine need and delivered through approved student accommodation or homestay providers. "It also provides increased support via the International Legal Service NSW, making available 50,000 free subscriptions to the multilingual My Legal Mate student app". A new 24/7 international student support service, through the NSW Government COVID-19 hotline (13 77 88), will offer free advice and information about other measures, including the moratorium on rental evictions and medical, mental health, legal and emergency support. The additional support being announced today complements efforts of our education institutions, highlighted by a combined $180 million commitment from NSW universities for their international and domestic students.
