25.01.2022 Shameless plug for my talented cousin who is stranded in Brisbane and has also been made unemployed. Sure she can do horses, dogs, cats anything you like! Even a share would be great appreciated

24.01.2022 NOTHINGS REALLY NEW This shoe could easily be over 100 years old Following my post yesterday I woke up to see this shoe from Italy on a Farriery page I follow ... Like all good ‘ideas’ they always come full cycle maybe with a bit more jargon thrown in to makes us look clever Most Farriery techniques have been developed through the necessity to keep horses ‘sound enough’ so people could earn a living Of course the Equine landscape has changed in most parts of the World but many of the methods are still essentially the same Nothing is really new Take it easy

23.01.2022 WE HAVE A WINNER Great result for Zoe yesterday where she won the Novice Class of the Mail-In Shoemaking Competition ‘Shoe Shoe & Shine’ For someone who only picked up a hammer 18 months ago her shoes (top photo) are coming along great ... Huge Congratulations and a testament to her hard work Very luckily I scraped a 4th in the Open Class, which was a welcome surprise as the standard of some of the Open competitors is excellent and it’s nice just to tag along As many of my school reports said ‘more effort needed’ Ric Bramucci runs this comp and it really is great to be involved so anybody looking for something to do in Lockdown, especially for Apprentices that will learn so much...get stuck in Cheers

23.01.2022 WHAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT? From my perspective if there is anything positive come out of Covid-19 it is the time I’ve had to reflect on what is important to me Without doubt my wife and 2 boys are at the absolute pinnacle of my importance along with the rest of my family and friends, but also important is my career in the Farriery industry ... Not just my ability to earn money to support my family and pay the bills, but as much the quality of training I provide my apprentices and the standard of work provided my clients Time management isn’t always my forte, but I also have a weakness to ‘fit everyone in’ I have made a vow to streamline the business and make time for the important ‘stuff’... Family, education and quality of work No more chasing around paddocks trying to catch unruly horses or even worse chasing payment when I can be attending to good clients horses or learning a thing or 2 in the Forge Don’t be offended if I don’t answer your message about Fluffy’s loose shoe at 6am Sunday morning from now. I will get to Fluffy all in good time Anyway enough philosophy for a Sunday night, ‘Carpe Diem’ people, but also take a bit of time to work out what’s really important Ps. Photo of one of Zoe’s handmades fitted to a school pony last week. Very important stuff

22.01.2022 SETTING UP HOME Well the sign is up at our new Workshop! I think it’s looks great. Special thanks go to my more than generous mate John Runiewicz whose design I ‘stole’ and Ryan Pepper for making it ... We’ve still got a huge amount of work to do inside and some of our plans have been scuppered by this bloody Covid The plan being to give the business a base and a quality workshop for Zoe and any future apprentices to practice and make shoes for ‘special horses’ You never know I may even pull my finger out and do some higher qualifications myself In the future (that seems a long way off currently) we will also have limited appointments for clients to float their horses and be shod in conjunction with Veterinary support if necessary Not only that we will have emergency availability Friday afternoons here for those very frustrating ‘post show weekend lost shoes’ Take it easy and cheers

22.01.2022 HAPPY WEEKEND, PEOPLE... Here’s Zoe ‘The Impaler’ Sutton knocking on Phoenix’s hind shoes under the watchful eye of Bella the dog Don’t look too long or that hallucinogenic rug will send you trippin’...... As we work on in such serene surroundings it’s hard to believe at times the World is in such turmoil. We are most definitely the lucky ones Stay strong, stay positive...and stay at home! Take it easy

20.01.2022 MOLLY’S BIG SHAVE Back in May our long term client and friend Molly lost her lovely Mum Mary to Lung Cancer On the 10th of December Molly is having her hair cut and her golden locks to be used for wigs for other needing Cancer patients ... A selfless act and something she promised to do for Mary before time sadly ran out. Molly is also collecting sponsorship money for the ‘big shave’ and today we shod her horse Nixie and in return, payment with go in the sponsorship kitty. Zoe even handmade and fitted Nixie’s hind shoes for the cause, which added an extra bit of love to the job not to mention a great achievement for a 2nd year apprentice We wish Molly all the best on the 10th and if any of you fancy adding even the smallest donation to the kitty please follow the link below it will be greatly received ! https://fundraising.cancervic.org.au//molly---s-hair-cut-f Take it easy and have a great weekend

20.01.2022 HOLDIN’ THE FORT Appreciation post to my apprentice Zoe who has been has been upped to Senior Executive the last few weeks As some of you know I had surgery before Christmas and have been out of action, but the way Zoe has stood up since I’m not even sure I’m needed anymore ... With such great work it’s easy to forget Zoe is only just at the end of her 2nd year Well done, Zoe ! In all seriousness I will be back to light duties next week and although the rest has been great I’m really looking forward to getting back into the swing of things Take it easy and have a good weekend

19.01.2022 3D PRINTING TO THE RESCUE Who would have thought a few years ago that 3D printing would become part of everyday Farriery and even potentially save a little pony’s life Today was a first for us but I very much doubt it will be a last ... Little Monty has been struggling for sometime with Chronic Laminitis. He’s been laying down and becoming very despondent Having had numerous tests and long periods locked up in a dirt yard, nothing seemed to be the answer Step forward Vaughan Ellis and his team at Pegasus Shoeing Vaughan has recently invested heavily in the equipment and staff to design and print 3D innovative hoofcare products that either aren’t available in the marketplace or for specific cases like Monty Why use 3D printing Firstly Monty has tiny feet, so tiny there are no shoes small enough on the market. Secondly, the shoes were designed to the exact dimensions of Monty’s feet. Win - win, plus there is absolutely no chance of nailing a shoe on We went for something very simple. Basically a slip on cuff that we could fill with Impression Material to aid with concussion. Then just taped them on They worked brilliantly and Monty is a very happy boy. A huge result for everyone involved Cheers

18.01.2022 GROUND FORCE REACCCCTTTIIIOON Here’s a lovely client that has been struggling with niggling High Suspensory Ligaments in his hind limbs Today we made up some flat shoes with a welded in toe-piece. They are often referred to Anti-Sinking, G.F.R or just simply Suspensory shoes around the traps ... These shoes will cause a ‘Ground Force Reaction’ as the foot hits the sand arena stopping the toe from sinking excessively and in turn relieving the stress on the Suspensory Ligament as the Fetlock descends distally... I love a bit of jargon, I do Hopefully very soon, he will be able to ‘float like a butterfly and sting like a bee’ Have a good weekend and take it easy Ps. Excuse the photo Zoe

17.01.2022 FULL SMORGASBORD ! Here we are on Day 2 of FARRIERS WEEK and Janelle Martin at Skye Equestrian Academy has pulled out a serious 10/10 The team won’t need to stop for lunch now! Zoe you can’t moan you’re hungry and need a rest now! ... Cheers Janelle

17.01.2022 Monty in his new 3D Printed ‘Dancing’ shoes. This is the best he’s moved in months having had periods of crippling laminitis and laying down. Cheers To Vaughan and the team at Pegasus Shoeing

17.01.2022 TOE DRAGGERZZZ Heavily worn dorsal toes on hind feet are often simply put down to deep sand arenas and lazy horses These of course can be a contributing factors, but very often the horse can also have some form underlying injury, weakness or conformational issue in its back or hind end ... Consequently the pedal bone in the hind feet may also have a degree of Negative Plantar Angle (N.P.A) and the hoof will flare in the quarters where the toe is lost as a weight bearing structure. Both will also exacerbate the overall issue You will also actually find the majority of hoof damage is actually done traipsing around in the paddock (unless of course you do roadwork) So, if you have Toe Dragger it maybe worth getting your vet to check over your horse before they make right mess of their feet with drier harder paddocks coming over the Summer months One of the main Principles of Farriery is to ‘provide protection to the feet’ ! Here is a great client of ours with a Toe Dragging issue and although the core of the problem is being investigated we have fitted hind shoes with a ‘Set Toe’ In basic terms, the toe of the shoe is bent up to provide protection of the affected area. The wear will now be on the toe of the metal shoe, not on the toe of the foot We’ve started pretty small and the ‘Set Toe’ can be made bigger even covering the dorsal wall which would actually be more of a ‘Toe Cap’ Hopefully in 6 weeks we will see some great results Excuse the long post, I’ve already had my 2 Hour Covid Lockdown exercise for today and it’s not even lunchtime Try and have a great weekend guys

17.01.2022 FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING Zoe made, fitted and finished her first shoe all on her own today Fantastic achievement for someone just into their 2nd year of their Apprenticeship ... Hopefully there’s plenty more where that came from Cheers

16.01.2022 HERE WE GO AGAIN...! Once again the greatest week of the Year is upon us That’s right, it’s that time again to show your support for the long suffering Farrier in your life... Think of all the emergency lost shoes they’ve fixed or late night messages about the latest fad you’ve seen on Facebook they’ve answered Give generously...be it a cuppa, a donut or god forbid a tip it will all be grately appreciated Strictly NO pats on the back this year though Take it easy and cheers

16.01.2022 HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE Well that’s a wrap for 2020 and what a year it has been From Bushfires to Covid and a whole lot of stress in between we look forward to a happier and more prosperous 2021 for all our clients new and old... Thank you for your support, patience and faith you have put in us to provide hoofcare to your pride and joy this year In a year that has been so tough for many it is important to look to the positives Zoe has developed her skills in leaps and bounds this year in her shoeing and shoemaking alike. She is now going into her 3rd year and has become a huge asset to the business ! Tayla having qualified last year has now built her business to the point that she will be cutting us loose in the New Year. Good on her ! I’m hugely grateful and proud of them both We have also set up our permanent base, ‘The Forge’ at Leisurely Park and although Covid has curtailed some of our plans we are excited to develop the workshop further in 2021 Take it easy and enjoy the holiday

16.01.2022 HAPPY FRIDAY PEOPLE Beautiful day down here in Victoria, got a couple of pretty cool new workers along for the ride Take it easy and have a great weekend

15.01.2022 ROSE TO THE CHALLENGE Fair play to Zoe she rose to the challenge of the 1 heat shoe...! and on a Sunday! Bloody ‘Teacher’s Pet’ ... Now we have a lovely pair of handmade shoes to go on this week, sure we can find a lucky horse Anybody who fancies a go, Farrier or not, the door is always open! Sometimes you need to challenge yourself. Stepping out of your comfort zone does wonders for your confidence Happy Sunday people

14.01.2022 KEEPING UP TO SPEED Zoe’s first full ‘make and fit’ all on her own For a 2nd year apprentice to make and fit their own shoes to this standard (with minimal help) is fantastic and really shows testament to the effort she is putting in ... There’s always improvements to make, but it really is great to see someone absorbing themselves in this ancient profession Like schools, Apprenticeship courses are currently postponed due to Covid restrictions so we are just plugging on with our own training programme just to make sure we are up to speed when we get back to the ‘new normal’ Keep positive people, there’s a great future ahead and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel Take it easy

13.01.2022 WHACK IT WEDNESDAY Ft. Zoe ‘Old Hand’ Sutton and Ethan ‘New Kid’ Height...plus some old bugger with a beard Since Covid came into our lives I’ve had a chance to organise the diary to allow some Forge time on Wednesdays to make ‘special’ shoes for particular horses in the following days ... So good for the soul and so much better for the horses. I absolutely love it Take it easy

10.01.2022 THE WONDER OF X-RAY Although at times us Farriers are expected to have ‘Super Powers’ ...X-Ray eyes sadly aren’t one of them! That’s where Vets and their amazing machines come in ! ... Here we have a high-class Dressage mare that has been ‘slightly off’ on the near fore. Initial external assessment of her foot shows no major problems, although the medial (inside) wall does present slightly longer. Having X-rayed her feet it is apparent the joint margin of the Coffin Joint is narrower medially than laterally (outside). She also has some bone bruising on the medial aspect of the Pedal bone seen on a previous MRI. To combat the bone bruising and regain even joint spacing it was deceided to ‘Float’ the medial heel and re-distribute the weight onto the Frog using a Heart Bar. In layman’s terms this creates a bridge over the affected area and will hopefully alleviate any pain. Job beautifully clenched and finished by Zoe Oh to have X-Ray eyes...! Cheers and have a good weekend Ps. Excuse the lack of floated heel photo. This ‘princess’ doesn’t like to stand still for too long

09.01.2022 EDDY & TEDDY It’s more of a ‘love - hate’ relationship! Apparently the cap that was the problem. Don’t blame him it was a $4 special from K-Mart ... Teddy is owned by our client Raquel at The Park Agistment, who also has a litter of these beauties being born this week. Take it easy and keep smiling

08.01.2022 THE EVIDENCE One heat shoe... ...well 2 actually to put a clip on, rasp up and give it a quick brush for the ‘Crowd’ and Facebook Likes ... Just a bit of fun...now waiting for Zoe’s shoe to make a pair and earn us a quid C’mon Zoe

07.01.2022 Handmade v Machine Made ‘Why do you make shoes when you can buy everything you need?’ Same horse, same foot. Different day ... First photo is a shoe handmade and fitted by Zoe (with a little help), the second a modified machine made from the previous shoeing. Unfortunately this foot isn’t a ‘standard’ size with a collapsed lateral heel ‘too boot’ we decided to make rather than modify his shoes this time. Neither is better or necessarily worse. They are both more than adequate for the required shoeing job, but by making them we know we have them perfect for size What is more important, is that we have well educated, well skilled Farriers that are passionate about the profession and the welfare of the horses in their care That should start at the very beginning and finish at the very end In a World of quick fixes, not everything can be bought off the shelf or downloaded off the Interweb Cheers

07.01.2022 HAPPY RETIREMENT ‘OLD’ BILL... Bill or Kalunda Thunder Struck as he’s known in the Showjumping World had his shoes taken off for the last time today Bill was pretty handy in his day winning a World Cup Qualifier, but more importantly to ‘us’ he has been a magnificent servant to Claire and Christie Freeman over the last 4 or so years ... A pleasure to shoe, a horse of a lifetime for Claire and a beautiful home for Bill How very lucky we’ve all been Good luck Old Bill, put your feet up, have a beer and take it easy buddy

07.01.2022 WORK FASTER BOY! I once had a College tutor that told us to ‘getting it hot and smash the sh*t out of it!’ Well here it is! ... There has been a few online challenges recently of making shoes in one heat. Good shoemakers should be able to do it in 3 or so heats, so it’s a fair effort So still under the Lockdown cloud and limited opportunities for ‘fun’ I thought I’d give it a crack Ok, I didn’t get it clipped but not too bad for an ‘old unfit fatty’. They do say Television puts on pounds don’t they? Over to you Zoe...your turn next Take it easy guys and have a good weekend

05.01.2022 TRAILER TRASH... Just a little pair of trailers on a fantastic young horse to help with the axial swing of the Hind limb. Plus a front foot to make up the numbers! ... Beautifully finished by Zoe ‘SuperClench’ Sutton Take it easy guys

05.01.2022 This is a fantastic opportunity for employment with great people in the Australian horse industry. Anyone lucky enough to get a job with Frannie and Courtney will love it.
