25.01.2022 Breathing and recovery

25.01.2022 The first 5 people to book with Andy and use the words 'Foam Rolling' in the booking notes, will get $50 off the inital visit. https://edwardsspineandsport.cliniko.com/bookings#location Does foam rolling your back really do want it to do? Probably not. The action puts a lot of stress on the bones and joints of your spine in a way they are not really designed for. The spinous process, the pointy bit at the back of each vertebra is not supposed to hold your body weight. And the... joints of the spine are made for you to stand up straight, not to have your body weight sheered across them. The lumps that you are trying to workout when you roll over them end up just getting pushed and squished further in the soft tissue of your back. You can see what happens when I roll over this lump of BlueTac. Even if I hold pressure on the spot, it just pushes further into the tissue. Sure, you get that good hurt, but the lump is still there the next time you use the roller. We use a targeted form of soft tissue therapy that has been designed to breakdown and free up the lumps youve beating yourself up trying to deal with. We have you move while the muscle is under tension, this way we can provide a very local stretch to the muscle. If you want to find out we can do for you, click the link below and book in with Andy. Andy is highly trained to diagnose and treat lower back and hip problems.

25.01.2022 This recent study shows that 10 minutes of neck flexion -the position you're holding your head to look at your phone right now - was enough to have a sustained impact on the way the muscles of the neck function. Unfortunately the impact was higher in female participants. Regularly changing positions and strength are key to reducing the risk of neck pain.

25.01.2022 Stopped in this morning to test out the new exercise bands that just arrived from @bchealthcare Great bands and great service!! - - This is our fav exercise for... the band. Its really effective and super simple. By holding the band this way you work all the muscles of your neck and spine, your core, arms and legs. And then theres the other use for the band... #physiotherapy #chiropractic #rehab #coreworkout #neckpain #lowerbackpain #keepitsimple @ Edwards Spine and Sport See more

24.01.2022 Ever wondered what the difference is between cracking your knuckles and cracking your back? Us too. Not all chiropractors crack backs. edwardsspinesport.com

24.01.2022 The ability to develop stiffness in the muscles of the lower back is essential to your overall function. You also need great moblity in the hips. Improving your mobility and function is our job, getting it strong is your job. Here is an except from a blog post by one of our chiropractors Andy Knowles on this very topic! "Can you imagine stacking a bunch of blocks on top of soft cushions and expecting the whole thing to be stable? Sounds crazy, right? If you were going to do ...it, youd need to tie the blocks down on all 4 sides to make the structure rigid. However, what if you needed to also able to move? Things would get complicated quickly. Youd need a lot more wires, pullies and a system to control the whole thing. Some of the wires would have to go tight at the same time others went loose. The fascinating thing is, this is close to how your lower back, or lumbar spine, actually does work. A series of blocks stacked on cushions, or bones stacked on top of discs. The spine has a number of different roles - Protect the spinal cord and nerves that send messages to every part of your body. - Allow movement so that you can bend, lift, twist, sit and walk. - Transfer and disperse force while you are bending, lifting, twisting walking etc. And do you know what? It does this far more elegantly and reliably than any guywire or pully system ever could!" To read the whole thing go here https://mandurahspineandsport.com.au/how-your-lower-back-a/

22.01.2022 One if the most common things we hear from patients is I felt it twinge a week or two ago, I thought it would get better... - A niggle is a lot easier to work... on than a full blown injury. While this study was done on soccer players, it applies to everyone doing the same thing day in day out. Does your wrist niggle when you’re using the mouse? Does your knee niggle going up the stairs? Does your hip niggle when you walk? Does your back niggle when you get out of the car? - Getting something done at the first sign of trouble is going to be easier and cheaper. #nigglesmatter #lowbackpain #neckpain #shoulderpain #chiropractic #physiotherapy #kneepain #wristpain @ Edwards Spine and Sport See more

22.01.2022 Does your squat look like A or B? If it looks like B and youre trying to fix it with a band around your knees you are increasing the strain on your knees according to this study in the British journal of sports medicine. https://bmjopensem.bmj.com/content/6/1/e000610 ........ Your knees arent coming in because your glutes are weak. Theres a number of reasons, but in our experience the adductors arent lengthening correctly. If you want to find out what the real problem is, come in and talk with Andy or Luke. They can do a full assessment on you and get to the cause of your faulty squat.

18.01.2022 Is it time for your 10,000 deadlift service??? From an injury perspective, deadlifting can be quite high risk. The height of the bar off the floor and the position of it in front of your shins makes it awkward, and very difficult to bring in the big power muscles in the early part of the movement. Trap bar/hex bar or rack pull/hanging deadlifts are a safer option. ... However, if youre going to pick heavy weights up off the floor, everything needs to be in perfect working order. Thats where we come in. #deadlift #lowerbackpain #hippain #trainsmart #physiotherapy #chiropractor

18.01.2022 We are temporarily closed as per government advice surrounding COVID-19. We will be in contact with all of our valued clients that are currently booked in for appointments during this period. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call us on 6161 0242 or email [email protected] We are continually monitoring both of these channels to help you the best we can.

18.01.2022 Training the rotator cuff muscles to rehab a shoulder doesn’t really make sense. Despite the name, the rotator cuff stabilises the shoulder. The big shoulder movers are the Deltoid, Lats and Pecs. Training those brings in the rotator cuff doing its normal role of stabilisation.

18.01.2022 Unfortunately it looks like we will be closed. This is the section of the WA state stay at home order that relates to allied health. As we don’t work in a hospital setting or provide Telehealth services it appears we have to close. We are still waiting on clarification from both the chiropractic and physiotherapy associations, but we will not be opening today. We will contact everyone to help rebook you. - https://www.wa.gov.au//310121-Stay-and-Home-and-Closure-Pe

17.01.2022 Lower back pain can literally be a pain in the butt. There are many possible causes, but one often over looked cause can be the cluneal nerves. Typically the pain starts as a sharp pull into the top of the glutes. This can last a day or two, then eases off to a dull ache. It leaves people feeling like they need someone to stick an elbow into the buttock, or like they need a good crack. But these treatments dont seem to work or last. The chiropractors and physiotherapist that work with us are trained to diagnose and treat this problem. Treatment is not a crack, an exercise or an elbow into the buttock. See our previous videos of how we do what we do. No point doing the same thing and expecting a different result!

16.01.2022 We'd like to give a big welcome to Russell, who is starting work with us on the 12th of June. He has been doing extra training in the treatment of soft tissue (muscle) injuries. 16.01.2022 Luke our physio is back! Hes spent the last few weeks figuring out ways to help with lower back, hip and knee pain. 15.01.2022 Since the gyms are closed, here are some simple home exercises to get you ready for them to reopen. These exercises focus on the posterior chain of muscles from the calves all the way to the tip of the neck. 4 simple exercises that can be done at home and all you need is a band and a step. Repeat the neck exercises 1-2 times every few hours, but all other 2 sets of 10 in the morning and in the evening.

11.01.2022 For those of you taking advantage of the day off to hit the gym, heres a little tip. Shoulder stability is influenced by how hard you grip the bar or weight. The stronger your grip, the more the muscles of your shoulder contract. - This is an anticipatory reflex to prepare the shoulder for a heavy load. - So squeeze that bar!!!... #shoulderstrength #rehab #muscles #bigshoulders #stronggrip #chiropractor #physiotherapy See more

09.01.2022 What stretches can I give you? None. Do the strengthening exercises I give you instead. Oh and get off your butt and move more...

09.01.2022 Are your butt muscles (gluts) always tight and not in a good way? Are you one of those people who is always poking, rubbing or trying foam roll/trigger point ball the back of your hip? Does it feel like the pain is coming from the top of your gluts and just radiating down? In some recent research, more evidence has come to light about how cluneal nerve entrapment can cause pain. This nerve passes down through the muscles of your back into the muscles of your buttock and can get trapped in the soft tissue across the top of your ilium (hip bone). It can cause pain when sitting and walking, pain that mimics sciatica/disc pain. If you are tired of stretching and foam rolling your gluts, Russell might able to help. Watch below for a video on how we work on this problem.
