25.01.2022 2020.05.22 - St Peters Fire, Percy Jack Motorcycles Okay 2020, that's enough, you can stop now. Around 9:30PM last night we noticed a weird chemical smell coming from outside, so I popped my head out our back doors and saw thick black smoke pouring over our building. I checked the Applebee Street side of our flat and saw flames flicking off the top of buildings across May Street, and immediately grabbed my camera.... The toxic smoke was awful (likely burning tyres, among other things), and there were several loud pops and bangs as tanks in the shop exploded. It’s still not clear what started the blaze, but it appears to have originated in the warehouse where local business Percy Jack Motorcycles recently relocated, which is terribly unfortunate. They’re a good bunch, and they’ve likely lost everything :( The NSW Police Force and Fire and Rescue NSW were already arriving on the scene (fast response!) as I snapped off a few photos. When the powerlines started sparking I knew it was time to move on! Thankfully, everyone in the neighbouring terraced houses escaped to safety with their various pets and a newborn in tow, most of them ending up in our building. We were fortunate to get a bit of rain while they were fighting the blaze, and the fire was eventually put out after about two hours. The preliminary report was that the terraced houses somehow avoided fire damage, but may still be at risk due to the structural integrity of the burnt out warehouse next door. Hopefully the tenants are able to return to their homes soon, and I’m hoping they find their belongings spared from smoke and water damage! The one silver lining from all this we met a bunch of our lovely neighbours last night! I continue to love this neighbourhood more and more All photos Edwin Sutphen Photography #stpeters #fire #stpetersfire #percyjackmotorcycles #sydney #innerwest #warehousefire #nswfireandrescue #nswpolice #fireandrescue #fightingfire #firefighters #esphoto #edwinsutphenphotography

14.01.2022 February Flooding In St Peters (360) All the rain this past week reminded me of the exciting evening I had a month ago when I decided to brave the elements and document the flooding in our little neighbourhood. After months of fires burning out of control north, west and south of the city, and the resulting smoke choking us every day for weeks, we were finally afforded a respite with four days of very much-needed rain.... All that rain helped put out half the fires across NSW (which are finally, a month later, all fully extinguished!), but we received nearly 400mm of rain across those four days (more than three times the average precipitation for February), which is the heaviest rainfall Sydney has experienced in 30 years... so needless to say, flooding was rampant! This lower lying area of St Peters has always been prone to flooding with far less precipitation, so despite all the new drainage installed by WestConnex along these corridors, it was no match for this influx of rain, and the intersection of May Street/Unwins Bridge Road and Campbell Street/Bedwin Road was covered by at least half a metre of water within only a few hours. Emergency response and road safety crews were overwhelmed and needed more elsewhere, the Town & Country Hotel had water up to its doors and their empty beer kegs floated away, several drivers foolishly drowned their cars attempting to ford the flooded intersection and revellers found a creative way across using only a few milk crates and a hook-handled umbrella! Despite all the mayhem, there were people out in this deluge finding the small joys in life, finding adventure in the adverse, laughing in the rain... just another reason I love St Peters #stpeters #sydney #flood #360photo #360panorama #sydneyflood2020 #sydneyfloods #westconnex #poordrainage #flooding #flooded #februaryflood #stpetersflood #floodedcar #drownedcar #nswpolice #rainfordays #endingthedrought #thankfulforrain #playingintherain #laughingintherain #adventure #tch #townandcountryhotel #revellers #ilovestpeters #esphoto #edwinsutphenphotography

13.01.2022 Sydney Sunsets Still Look Good The virus is definitely taking its toll, both literally and mentally. I feel all the stress and angst that my cooped up family and friends are feeling as they shelter in place, work from home, lose work, or try to avoid the outside world altogether. It is weird for me to be out and about during all that’s going on. I’ve been commuting between St Peters and Artarmon nearly every weekday since the middle of February, while Julie has been working f...rom home and avoiding going anywhere. I’ve been fortunate enough to land a well-timed, well-paid gig with a company that’s managing to stay open during this pandemic, and I just can’t say no to the opportunity. I’m torn every morning as I step out onto the significantly quieter streets. There is risk in continuing to take on this job, but in the freelance industry it’s this or nothing at this point. How much longer will this work last? If it stops, how long will that last? How can I say no? What if I get sick? My gut says, make hay while the sun shines! The trains and busses I ride across the city are a quarter full (or less) at any given time. People are catching on that keeping their distance from each other is what must be done. Paying attention to each other is the new norm. It’s bizarre. I’m lucky to have my health and relatively steady work, despite these uncertain times. I’m doing the best I can to take care of myself as I continue to traverse the city. These quieter commutes are the only real silver lining to this strange new world we’re currently living in. I find myself taking in the city more along the way, reflecting on its beauty and enjoying its character. Today‘s commute home was particularly special as my reward for working two hours later than usual was this beautiful display of colour over the city skyline. It’s strange out here, but I am happy to report that Sydney sunsets still look good. #sydney #sunset #covid_19 #sydneysunset #sydneyskyline #sydneytrains #transportfornsw #cityofsydney #pinksky #pandemic #prettycity #commute #redfernstation #thankyoutraindrivers #thankyoubusdrivers #esphoto #edwinsutphenphotography

09.01.2022 I Know Leopard are playing a FREE show at The Royal Bondi with Tim Ayre TONIGHT. Show starts at 6PM. Sometimes posting anything at all is what it takes to get the ball rolling and get the creative juices flowing... Music is a tremendous inspiration in my life. I LOVE music, and I love capturing the people that make it.... I snapped these photos of my absolute favourite Sydney locals I Know Leopard back in November when they played the Paddo RSL (great venue!). As always, it was a brilliant show. If you haven’t spun their debut LP, ‘Love Is A Landmine,’ do yourself a favour and get it in your ears. Pumped for tonight! #iknowleopard #livemusic #seesound #esphoto #edwinsutphenphotography

08.01.2022 The Burj Al Arab -------------------------------------------------- I just had to include the full, vertical, uncropped versions of these two photos from the previous post. The Burj Al Arab is simply massive, featuring some of the most incredible architecture and engineering. Humans are amazing! Since we can’t travel right now, and all my photo-related work has disappeared during this pandemic, I think the one year anniversary of one of the most epic adventures Julie and I h...ave ever embarked upon is the perfect time to start sharing it. During our departure from Dubai International, we finally caught our first proper glimpse of the Burj Khalifa (previous post) and flew out over the city to the coast, passing by the Burj Al Arab (one of the tallest hotels in the world, seen here, shaped like a ship’s sail), and the incredible man-made Palm Jumeirah and Palm Jebel Ali (previous post), which afforded me some great photo opportunities, despite my grimy window! -------------------------------------------------- #dubai #dubaiinternationalairport #burjalarab #huge #UAE #unitedarabemirates #persiangulf #seagreen #internationalflight #emirates #engineering #architecture #manmade #humansareamazing #travelinthetimeofcovid #covid19 #travelmemories #thistimelastyear #travelphotography #travel #adventure #exploremore #julieandedwinadventure #julieandedwingotoafrica #africa2019 #africanadventure #esphoto #edwinsutphenphotography @ Burj Al Arab

03.01.2022 The Adventure Begins -------------------------------------------------- Since we can’t travel right now, and all my photo-related work has disappeared during this pandemic, I think the one year anniversary of one of the most epic adventures Julie and I have ever embarked upon is the perfect time to start sharing it. On 28 May 2019, after a 14 hour overnight flight from Sydney, we arrived bright and early at Dubai International. We only had a short two hour layover, and then ...we were on our way. During departure we finally caught our first proper glimpse of the Burj Khalifa (first photo in this series, just to the left of the light post), the world’s tallest tower (828m/2,717ft). We passed through Dubai on a trip to Europe in 2016, but the desert dust hid it from us, so finally getting to actually see the tallest man-made structure, truly towering above everything else, was a real treat... it is mind-bogglingly tall! (It’s in the first photo in this series, just to the left of the light post) We even had the added bonus of flying out over the city to the coast, passing by the Burj Al Arab (one of the tallest hotels in the world, shaped like a ship’s sail), and the incredible man-made Palm Jumeirah and Palm Jebel Ali (stunningly massive palm-shaped islands, built completely out of sand reclaimed from the Persian Gulf), which afforded me some great photo opportunities, despite my grimy window! -------------------------------------------------- #dubai #dubaiinternationalairport #burjkhalifa #UAE #unitedarabemirates #skyskraper #worldstallesttower #mindblowing #internationalflight #emirates #burjalarab #palmjumeirah #palmisland #manmade #humansareamazing #travelinthetimeofcovid #covid19 #travelmemories #thistimelastyear #travelphotography #travel #adventure #exploremore #julieandedwinadventure #julieandedwingotoafrica #africa2019 #africanadventure #esphoto #edwinsutphenphotography @ Dubai, United Arab Emirates
