25.01.2022 New Years Exercise Goals! As many people are ramping up their exercise following a break over Christmas it is important to keep a few key points in mind: - A lot of injuries are caused by an increase in training load, it is important to gradually build up into exercise following a break! - Starting a new form of exercise can also be a high risk time for injury, so if you are starting something new it is also worth easing in slowly!... We have appointments available next week so please get in contact if you would like some advice while ramping up your exercise!

25.01.2022 Great to see Charlie back jogging under 4 months after his ACL reconstruction! All the hard work at home and in the gym is paying off! Well done!! If you need any help with post surgery rehab please get in touch!!

24.01.2022 Best of luck to Nick and Tahia who are heading off to New York to run the TCS New York City Marathon this weekend! Both have overcome several niggles/injuries (as most people who run a marathon do!) and have been super dedicated to their running and gym programs! Enjoy the event and no doubt you will both finish in great times!

24.01.2022 Dry needling for knee pain! Dry needling can be beneficial for a range of areas including the knee. Anni has been benefitting from dry needling to reduce pain and tension in her quad and knee! If you think dry needling could help any sore spots you may have please get in contact!

23.01.2022 EFM Physio is Back! After a brief break due to COVID restrictions, physiotherapy is now allowed to resume in South Australia! Appointments are available this Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and evening at EFM Health Clubs Burnside and Wednesday evening at EFM Health Clubs Hawthorn!... Please get in touch to book in!

23.01.2022 Massive Congratulations to Nick and Tahia on completing the TCS New York City Marathon! Tahia completed her first marathon in 4 hours 27 minutes, while Nick shaved 20 minutes off his time from last year to run it in 3 hours 19 minutes. They have both put in a huge effort over the past 12 months, not only to run a heap of kilometres every week but also to complete gym programs, recovery sessions and manage several injuries/niggles along the way!

22.01.2022 This time of year it is a common complaint at a physio that someone has sore feet, calves or knees and puts this down to wearing thongs over summer! Yes, a drastic change in footwear such as wearing work shoes all year and then thongs for 3 weeks straight while on holiday can lead to soreness! However, some time in thongs can be fine as long as it is not a sudden change and the transition from one footwear to another is gradual!... https://amp.smh.com.au//in-defence-of-thongs-and-science-2

22.01.2022 With the busy Christmas period fast approaching we now have made early afternoon appointments available on Tuesdays and Thursdays so you can fit in Physio during the day and free up your evenings! Please get in contact if you would like to make an appointment to get any niggles sorted before the end of the year!

22.01.2022 Fiona has been struggling for a number of months with some hamstring pain for a while particularly when driving. She has been working on an exercise program for the last month and tonight we trialled a lumbar support which offered her some relief! This shows how a combination of activity modification and a tailored exercise program can often be the best way of managing long term problems!

21.01.2022 EFM Physiotherapy is now up and running with Video-Consults! With many people self isolating at the moment we can now bring physio to you! Using a video call we can assess and discuss your injury, pain or issue and come up with a plan to best manage it!... Please get in contact if you would like to book in, or if you have any questions!

21.01.2022 Interesting research coming out as sports return to competition post COVID restrictions. A report from Dr Joel Mason, an Australian working in Germany found that injury rates had tripled from 0.27 to 0.88 during the first round of the Bundesliga Soccer Competition. This increase in injuries is likely to be the case across all sports, with participants not ready for the intensity of games returning post an extended break. ... This shows the importance of a gradual increase in intensity to exercise post this COVID lay off! Please get in contact if you would like some help with some injury prevention or management!!

21.01.2022 Should you be using a foam roller? Using a foam roller, spiky ball or other hard ball () is commonly included in recovery or warming up! While there are many theories as to why and how this works, there is only limited evidence to support many of the common ideas! ... What we do know is that using a foam roller or rolling on a hard ball can increase mobility in a particular area and can lead to a decrease in muscle pain! This all means you can recover faster and get more value out of your exercise! Generally the foam roller is better for rolling out larger areas with more general soreness (hamstrings, quads, back) while using a hard ball is more effective for areas with more specific muscle tightness (glutes, arches of your feet). Please get in contact if you would like any more info!

20.01.2022 How many single leg calf raises can you do? Did you know that decreased calf strength can be a risk factor for a number of issues including Achilles issues, calf strains and shin splints. A study by Herbert-Losier et al in 2017 included over 500 active participants and found the average amount of single leg calf raises for each age bracket.... If you cant reach the average for your age it might be worth adding some calf raises (with or without adding extra resistance) into your routine to help minimise the risk of lower leg injuries! Please get in contact with any questions!

20.01.2022 Amazing video of US Swimmer Katie Ledecky swimming while balancing a glass of chocolate milk on her head! This would take a huge amount of control, coordination and an amazing ability to maintain stability, as a result of years of training! Well worth a watch!

19.01.2022 Injury Prevention for kids! There are plenty of resources around for exercises/warm ups/prehab programs for preventing ACL and other lower limb injuries, but this one is unique in that in targets kids under 14. Based on the FIFA 11+ program, this kids edition is designed to be more interactive and fun, in particular to soccer players but could be modified to be used for other sports! Particularly as sports are resuming post COVID closures, it is important to keep injury preve...ntion in mind and get on top of any niggles early! Please get in contact if you have any issues!

18.01.2022 First evening of appointments at EFM Health Clubs Hawthorn tonight! Appointments can be booked online at https://efm-physiotherapy.cliniko.com/bookings for either Hawthorn or EFM Health Clubs Burnside... Or alternatively you can call or text me on 0424 188 393.

17.01.2022 Free Weights vs Machines Many gyms are set up with a combination of free weights (Dumbells and Barbells) as well as Strength Training Machines, both of which have their strengths and weaknesses. Free weights are more versatile than machine based strength training (as they can be used in a range of different exercises) and force you to use stabilising muscles which means you strengthen more muscles at the same time!... Machine based resistance training is often beneficial for beginners as the exercise is more controlled and often safer, they also can allow you to isolate a particular muscle and can make it harder to use other body parts or momentum to assist. Overall it is good to utilise both types of strength training in order to get the best results! Please chat with your EFM Trainer or get in contact with me for any more advice!

17.01.2022 Torb tore his ACL a few months ago playing ice hockey and is awaiting a reconstruction next month. He has joined EFM Health Clubs Burnside and is doing a pre-hab program to give him the best chance at a good recovery post op. This includes working on his range of motion, strengthening around his knee and working on his proprioception as shown here!

17.01.2022 Over the past few weeks Ive been growing a mo for Movember Australia to raise money and awareness for mens health,in particular a good mate who is battling cancer at the moment! Any contribution is greatly appreciated! https://au.movember.com/mospace/13461592

16.01.2022 How are you adjusting to your new lifestyle during this period of COVID changes?! Have you suffered an injury from working out by yourself? Are you getting sore from your poorly set up home office?... Physio is still considered an essential service so we are continuing to offer appointments. This can be either via a secure video call (which most people find very effective) or face to face at our 2 locations (EFM Health Clubs Hawthorn and EFM Health Clubs Burnside.) With both of the gyms closed we are easily able to maintain social distancing and through thorough cleaning and hygiene, it is considered very low risk! If you would like to book in for an appointment please get in contact!

15.01.2022 EFM Physio COVID update! Physio practices are required to close during this 6 day lock down, so there will obviously be no face to face appointments available in this time. Telehealth appointments via a video call are still permitted and can be a good way to keep you on the right track or get you set up with a home exercise program until in person appointments resume!... I am contacting all those that were booked for an appointment during this lockdown, to either offer a Telehealth appointment, or reschedule for when the restrictions are lifted!

14.01.2022 Now is the time to book in for an appointment before your private health rebates run out! Most private health insurers re set their yearly limits on December 31 so book an appointment now to get any niggles sorted!

14.01.2022 Welcome back to the gym! Lots of gyms re opened today including EFM Health Clubs Burnside! For those that are resuming in the gym, remember to start off with a slightly lower resistance, speed or duration than what you may of done prior to the COVID break, then slowly build up over the next few weeks!... If you have any niggles or issues as you transition back in to your normal exercise routine please get in contact and book an appointment!

14.01.2022 Happy World Physio Day! The theme for World Physiotherapy Day 2020 is "rehabilitation after severe respiratory illness" and the role that physiotherapy can have in helping people through recovery from COVID and other similar conditions. This illustrates how physiotherapy can treat not only musculoskeletal injuries, but can also play an important role in setting up exercise programs or increasing physical activity in those with more complex health conditions.... Please get in contact if you would like to book in for a physio appointment!

12.01.2022 Physiotherapy is not just about returning to sport! Here we have Sue who has been coming in for Physio over the past few months. Mid way through last year she was participating in a seniors exercise group and was very active for her age. Sue had a fall and landed on her right hip which she had previously had replaced. While she didnt do any structural damage, she was quite sore and shaken up by the fall. ... When I met Sue she was walking with a frame, not driving and fairly inactive compared to a few months prior. Through strength and balance exercises as well as walking practice, Sue has regained a lot of her confidence. She can now walk with a stick or unaided for short distances, has returned to driving and regained much of her independence. She had recently returned to her seniors exercise group as well! If you know of any family or friends that could do with this sort of help please get in contact!

12.01.2022 Here is Torb, 4 weeks after having his ACL reconstructed, he is back doing squats with a light weight without any discomfort. He is also riding the exercise bike pain free and doing a range of other rehab exercises. This shows how quickly you can be back moving and exercising post op, provided you are diligent with a structured rehab program! For any assistance with post op rehabilitation please get in contact.

12.01.2022 Pilates up and running the last few weeks at EFM Health Clubs Hawthorn! Reminder Physio is also available at this location (200 Belair rd, Hawthorn) as well as EFM Health Clubs Burnside!

10.01.2022 Last night I attended an Australian Physiotherapy Association education session that discussed the benefits of hands on treatment (such as massage and mobilisation) in physiotherapy. While much of Physio has moved towards exercise based treatment, it was good to listen to a discussion about particular ways that hands on treatment can still be useful and very beneficial!

09.01.2022 Are you working out at home? With social isolation in full swing lots of people have had to start exercising at home! Whether you are completing a program from your local EFM health club or doing your own thing at home, this change in exercise routine brings with it a risk of injury!... If you have any niggles or need help transferring your rehab program from the gym to a home based program please get in contact! EFM Physio is up and running with Telehealth where we can communicate via video call to still provide the same high quality Physio in this time of social isolation! Please get in contact with any questions?

09.01.2022 Great example here of modifying an activity (in this case proprioceptive training in football) to your chosen sport or activity! This is a great way of minimising injury risk as well as being an important part of recovering from many leg injuries including ankle sprains and knee reconstructions in particular. These sort of exercises can be modified to an appropriate level of difficulty as well as adapted to your chosen hobby, sport or interest. ... Please get in contact if you have any questions!

09.01.2022 Nick was meant to be running the Berlin Marathon next week which is obviously no longer possible! Instead he is running a marathon in the adelaide parklands next Sunday and in the process has already raised over $1000 for dementia research! Tonight he came in for some treatment on his back to get him through the last few kms. Here is the link if you would like to donate to Nicks fundraising: ... https://fundraising.dementia.org.au//nickedwards/marathon- See more

08.01.2022 Pre Season Training Importance! For those who are training for upcoming winter sports seasons here is something to consider. A study on AFL Footballers, found that those who completed less than 50% of pre season training load, were 1.9x more likely to suffer an injury during the upcoming season, than those who completed greater than 85% of sessions. (Murray et al 2017) This shows why it is so important to gradually load your body for a particular sport! ... If injury is preventing you from participating in pre season it is definitely worth seeing a physio to sort out the issue before it impacts on your season!

08.01.2022 Non operative management post ACL injury. There is increasing evidence and examples of people who are not having their torn ACL repaired surgically. Instead with specific rehab and strengthening they are able to regain good functional use of their knee and minimal incidences of further injury and long term issues. As with rehab post ACL reconstruction, these positive outcomes are normally only achieved if a thorough and long duration rehab is completed! Here is an article about an AFL Women's player who tore her ACL for the second time and is now mid way through her rehabilitation, she is hoping to be ready for the start of the 2020 season!

07.01.2022 Big shout out to Nick who ran his third marathon, about 30mins faster than what he was planning when he was struggling with a sore back 10 days out from the run!

07.01.2022 Pretty impressive rehab exercise set up at Hawthorn Football Club as Jarman Impey continues to rehab his knee following an ACL reconstruction last year. This circuit includes components of agility, proprioception, balance and power, all skills that are needed to complete a good recovery from an ACL reconstruction! https://twitter.com/hawthornfc/status/1238313837671206912

07.01.2022 Happy 2nd Birthday to EFM Physio! 2 years ago today, EFM Physio started up! 06.01.2022 WORLD OSTEOPOROSIS DAY - Today! Osteoporosis affects over 1 million Australians! It is a loss of bone strength relating to a decrease in bone density and is often not diagnosed until a fracture occurs! A Fracture related to osteoporosis happens every 3.4 minutes in Australia!... It is most common in women over 50, but others can also be affected. A poor diet, low levels of physical activity, other health conditions and certain medications can increase your risk of Osteoporosis. Physiotherapy is one health profession that can help people who suffer from osteoporosis, with exercise programs (particularly weight bearing or resistance exercises), activity modification, balance training and education about bone health are among the ways a physio can assist!

05.01.2022 Now that gyms are back in action, book in for an appointment to sort out any niggles that may have popped up as you settle back into a routine! Appointments are available Tuesday/Thursday afternoons and evenings at EFM Health Clubs Burnside as well as Wednesday evenings at EFM Health Clubs Hawthorn! If these times dont work please get in contact and we can be flexible!

04.01.2022 EFM Physio remains open! As per the latest Government closures, Physiotherapy is deemed as an essential service and is exempt from current business closures. With the gym closed, it means we have access to an isolated area so there is minimal cross over with other people! We are also regularly cleaning the entire space and regularly practicing hand hygiene. So if you have an appointment booked and require physiotherapy please continue to come, if you would like an appointmen...t please get in contact. We are also looking into starting video-consulting in the near future to enable those in social isolation to access physio review, exercises and advice.

02.01.2022 Step Length for Runners While running, the cadence (number of steps you take per minute) can have a strong relationship to injury incidence. A 2016 study showed a decrease in shin splints in those who took more than 177 steps per minute, compared to those with a cadence of 165. ... A 2014 study showed a 10% increase in cadence correlated to a 14% decrease in patella (kneecap) pain. A 2011 study showed a 5% increase in cadence led to a 20% reduction in energy absorption at the knee.
