21.01.2022 What are Dyslexia & Dysgraphia? Dyslexia and Dysgraphia are brain wiring (neurological) conditions that cause someone to have difficulty with reading and expressing themselves. The key signs of Dyslexia and Dysgraphia can be experienced and witnessed by challenges with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, poor spelling, decoding and comprehension abilities, poor handwriting and written and verbal expression. I strongly believe that Dyslexia and Dysgraphia are 'challenges'... not a 'disabilities' and with the appropriate literacy skills teaching/intervention and mind wellness coaching methodologies, people with both 'Dys's' can lead happy, fulfilling and successful lives! Those with these Dys's who struggle in life are highly likely to experience anxiety and trauma which potentially can lead to mental health issues. Both Dyslexia and Dysgraphia create unique experiences for everyone - they affects people in different ways. If your child shows signs of these literacy-related behaviours, it is important to have them assessed by an appropriately qualified neuropsychologist or educational psychologist to identify whether Dyslexia and/or Dysgraphia are the cause/s of their learning challenges. It is equally essential for them to engage in evidence-based literacy learning intervention, so they receive the appropriate methods for learning, including mind wellness coaching to encourage development of their self-worth and confidence. Most schools in mainstream education and home-based literacy programs do not teach evidence-based literacy methods. Therefore, children with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia miss out on the vital skills to enable them to scaffold their learning through their early years and by the time they reach around 8 and 9 years of age (Grade 4 and onwards), their learning in many areas begins to decline, and so does their self-worth. Heading into teenage years and adulthood with limited literacy skills almost always affects further learning and a person’s self-worth and opportunities to thrive in their life. We will be launching evidence-based literacy coaching in small group and one-on-one coaching sessions during this year. We will also be offering wellbeing learning hubs starting around mid year.
