25.01.2022 Engaging Australians on the importance of closing the recycling loop by buying products made with recycled content is also key to creating a sustainable future. We need to rethink our waste and see it as a resource that can be turned into new products. By keeping these materials in circulation for as long as possible, this benefits the environment by reducing the extraction of virgin materials for new products, as well as the water and energy it takes to make them. #nationalrecyclingweek #plantark #recycle #circulareconomy #sustainability

25.01.2022 EIANZ welcomes the Committee of Northern Australia’s Interim Report to the Inquiry into the destruction of 46,000-year-old caves at the Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. We believe it is an important step forward and we support the committee’s statement that ‘never again can we allow the destruction, the devastation and the vandalism of cultural sites as has occurred with the Juukan Gorgenever again’. It is the Institute’s hope that the impact on herit...age and cultural values of Juukan Gorge, and distress to the Traditional Owners, can serve to drive a better understanding of Aboriginal heritage and how and why they need to be protected well beyond the life of any individual project. EIANZ considers that destruction of significant cultural heritage sites such as Juukan Gorge is irrevocable. The values of such sites are irreplaceable and important, not only to PKKP Traditional Owners who have a deep spiritual and cultural connection to their cultural heritage, but also to the broader public and future generations, who have lost an important part of their history and the nation’s story. 24.01.2022 Has rainfall for the year to date been enough to break the drought? This week during #WorldWaterWeek, we look at the impact this years rain has had on Austral...ias worst-affected drought areas. Since January this year, some regions of eastern Australia have received above-average rainfall, particularly across some of the worst drought-affected areas of central and western New South Wales. This rainfall has been welcome and has eased drought conditions by helping fill dams on farms and wetting soils. But some areas have largely missed out on recent rains. Southern South Australia and southwest Western Australia have received below-average rainfall in 2020, continuing dry conditions from 2018. Most drought-affected areas still need sustained above-average rainfall for streamflow and water storages to increase to at least average levels. 22.01.2022 Plants nurture a whole world of creatures in the soil, that in return feed and protect the plants. This diverse community of living organisms keeps the soil healthy and fertile. This vast world constitutes soil biodiversity and determines the main biogeochemical processes that make life possible on Earth. World Soil Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being. #WorldSoilDay

20.01.2022 Today is #InternationalWhaleSharkDay! Did you know... Their maximum size and age is unknown, with estimates as high as up to 20 meters and a lifespan of over 100 years. Whale sharks give birth to live young.... Whale shark mouths can contain more than 300 rows of small teeth. Unfortunately, these graceful giants are #endangered. One way you can help is by preventing #marine pollution from #plastic waste. You can do this by reducing consumption of single use plastics and #recycling. #whaleshark #nature #wildlife #ocean #facts #conservation #biodiversity

19.01.2022 Mountains are home to 15% of the world's population and host about half of the world's biodiversity hotspots. They provide freshwater for everyday life to half of humanity. Unfortunately, mountains are under threat from climate change and overexploitation. Rising temperatures also mean that mountain glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, affecting freshwater supplies downstream for millions of people. World Mountain Day reminds each and every one of us to reduce our ca...rbon footprint and take care of these natural treasures. #WorldMountainDay #EIANZ2020 See more

15.01.2022 Its #BiodiversityMonth and were celebrating the mighty efforts of the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee who, together with local Landcare groups, ar...e helping protect two of Australias most biodiverse regions by planting rainforest trees and stablising riverbanks to prevent tonnes of soil entering the Great Barrier Reef. Thanks to funding from the Australian Governments #ReefTrust program they have already planted 18,000 seedlings of 170 different rainforest species in the Mary River catchment. As a result of their work local threatened freshwater species such as the Mary River cod and the Mary River turtle will also benefit.
