This tradition is being enhanced by increasing online connectivity, deep learning and both human and artificial intelligence. The opportunities are unparalleled and exponential. Done well they build on a long tradition of community development. I agree with Nesta CEO, Geoff Mulgan’s recent thinking on one of the greatest challenges of our time: ‘how can we use expanding connectivity for good?’. I’m always lifted by stories of a collective mind solving challenges and creating new ways forward. My optimism rests heavily on the basis that we do better when we act as a collective. The earth is a better place, the neighbourhood is a better place and the home is a better place. In new times, we can enhance that by providing opportunities to interconnect in various ways. Radio panels, social media and ecosystem platforms like Mindhive, Airbnb, Kaggle they provide a sandpit for people to play in and come up with new ideas and solutions for problem-solving, accommodation and data analytics. It is our responsibility to try to bring the best thinking to our current and future situation. That drives all of the work I’m doing at the moment.
