24.01.2022 We tend to see weight and health as something that goes hand-in-hand. Let's try to switch the focus from losing weight to gaining good health, vitality, energy, motivation, wellbeing, or just LIFE. I always hear people say, "What's the point of eating healthy? We're all just going to die one day anyway. My grandpa smoke, drank and ate sugary foods daily and lived until he was 98!"... I can see both sides, as I've been on the 'other side' of the argument before. Again, it all comes back to balance. Nutritionists/naturopaths/GP's/etc. preach a healthy lifestyle because it increases the QUALITY of your life, and not just the LONGEVITY of it. You might have amazing genetics that will let you live to the ripe old age of 102, but will you really want to live that long if you're in pain caused by a lifelong inflammatory diet? Probably not! Yes, you might be totally fine either way, but I'd say that the majority of us benefit from eating well 90% of the time in that our quality of life improves. Getting the nutrients we need might be the difference between feeling like you can't get out of bed because you're too tired, or jumping up each morning with vigour. How does that work? One of the ways it can work is by giving you enough iron, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 to avoid a deficiency. Deficiencies in these vitamins can actually cause anaemia, and fatigue is one of the side effects. You also need these vitamins to produce energy in the body directly, in a thing we've all repressed from past biology classes called the Krebs cycle.

22.01.2022 I've been on the hunt for pasta/potato/quinoa/etc. cold salads that I can keep in the fridge for easy lunches to help beat the hot weather, and save time when working from home. I also wanted comfort during the 5-day lockdown, and carbs were the answer... Sooo here's what I created with some of the pesto from the recipe a couple of posts back It's delicious, and nutritious.... It's also not made with normal pasta, but with pulse pasta! Although it still hits all the right carb-craving tastebuds as a complex carbohydrate, it also contains lots of protein and fibre to keep cravings at bay and keep you fuller for longer. Recipe: -1 pack of @sanremopasta pulse penne -Many tbsp of pesto (see two posts back for recipe) until pasta is coated to your liking -3-4 tomatoes -Two big, organic and free range chicken breasts - I got mine from @canningsbutchers -Salt, pepper, chilli/chilli flakes, other herbs/spices of your choosing (fresh basil would be great) 1. Cook your chicken breasts fully through, either by poaching in water in a pot or in the oven 2. While that's cooking, add your pasta to a pot and follow instructions on pack. 3. Dice and lightly cook tomatoes in a pan with some olive oil 4. Add pasta to a big bowl with tomatoes and pesto 5. Once chicken is cooked through and not pink on the inside, shred it and add to pasta - toss to combine. Enjoy! This got my partner and I through about 3 lunches, and took less time than it would have taken to order lunch from Uber Eats (I take a long time to decide what I want). See more

21.01.2022 Or at least, that's what I've been telling myself lately.. So I haven't posted anything new to Instagram for about 4 months. I could easily blame it on the pandemic, but to be honest I'm just completely terrible at using social media - always have been, always will be! But I'm going to try my best to post consistently from here on out. I always tell my clients to be patient with themselves, and that change takes time - there is no magic pill, and comparing yourself to other...s is futile because you are you, and they are they. I'm going to take my own advice and stop being too afraid to post to Instagram because it may not be as "good" as many others' content out there. We are individuals and all have our own message to share! TLDR: I'm back from my 4 month anxiety-ridden hiatus, but I don't hate myself and you shouldn't hate yourself either if you don't get results straight away

11.01.2022 Fermented garlic in honey is a tried and true recipe for killing off even the strongest cold or flu. All you need to do is peel and throw in one cup of garlic in a jar, then cover it in honey. Leave it in a room temperature environment for a few days, flipping upside down to cover the garlic on top occasionally. The honey will become runny and intense in flavour. If it's too much, add some regular honey on top to keep it down, because I recommend having one clove every hour (...up to 6 a day maximum) to kill any bug you have within a couple of days. If prevention is the goal, one or two cloves a day will suffice. Yes, you will get garlic breath. However, since we aren't going anywhere anytime soon, don't worry about it! Your body will thank you for giving it a fighting chance... Recipe from growforagecookferment.com/fermented-honey-garlic/

04.01.2022 UMAMI What is umami? Most of us have heard of it before, but besides it tasting savoury, we aren't quite sure what it is exactly. Umami is the more subtle and newly discovered 5th taste. It's not as easily placed as the obvious sweet, salty, sour, and bitter flavours. ... You can find near-pure things that define sweetness in nature (sugarcane), saltiness (sea salt), sourness (lemons), and bitterness (bitter gourd). But the closest thing we have for this with umami is in MSG, or monosodium glutamate, which is not a natural occurrence and has been more or less condemned in the nutrition community. I couldn't find any real evidence against MSG, so I'm pretty neutral when it comes to it. However, umami-rich foods have been shown to aid digestion and help you curb your appetite by increasing feelings of fullness. The highest consumers of umami-rich foods are in Asia, which also happens to be the area with the healthiest BMI's. Correlation doesn't mean causation, but it could have something to do with it! ---SOURCES OF UMAMI--- -Seaweed -Miso -Soy sauce -Soybeans -Tofu -Aged cheese -Kimchi -Green tea -Sardines -Tomatoes -Mushrooms (especially shiitake) ---UMAMI-RICH OATS RECIPE--- -1/2 cup oats -1 cup almond milk (or use soy for even more umami) -Mushrooms -Egg -Tbsp miso paste -Tsp soy sauce -Seasonings (I used salt, pepper, and oregano) -Tabasco 1. Cook oats in a small pot with almond milk. 2. Meanwhile, chop up handful of mushrooms and fry in a large frying pan with ghee/olive oil/butter with your favourite herbs and spices. 3. If there's room, fry an egg in the same pan. 4. Once oats are cooked, mix in miso and soy in the pot. 5. Plate it up and add a couple of dashes of @tabasco to give it a kick. See more
