25.01.2022 Kate Kutty from the Black Dog Institute talking about the growth industry that mental health has become. Are we moving away from the shell be right, stiff upper lip and shame of identifying and seeking support for our own mental health needs? as much as identifying and asking the question of others. RUOK? And getting over the fear of our capacity as a friend or colleague, if the answer is no... Im not. You dont have to be an expert to ask RUOK, even if the answer i...s no, because of course, the next step is to ask whats the next step? Thanks Hens for hosting a lovely morning tea at Henley Bowling Club site. Next event at this location is Saturday 19 September Market Day!! When everyone can enjoy the space and participate in Councils Community survey pop up stall to have your say about what is special to you about Gladesville Reserve area. See more

24.01.2022 Such a special place filled with beautiful memories for the Dowdalls and a reminder to the rest of us that, as hard as it is to farewell a beautiful child, no life is too short if it is lived to the fullest.

23.01.2022 Last HuntersHill Council zoom for the year. Looking forward to having my bedroom back!!

23.01.2022 Meeting over in close to record time tonight, even with several gritty topics on the agenda. I managed to sneak in a late General Business thank you to the mix of community groups, not for profit organisations council staff and residents who attended the first Fancy Flea Market at Henley on the weekend. Against a backdrop of river views, we enjoyed some up-cycling bargains, some delicious coffee and a hearty breakfast, brought to us through co-operation and collaboration and some hard working residents and Council facilitators. Can't wait to see what they come up with next.

23.01.2022 A beautiful walk along the Hunters Hill Bicycle Route for some fresh air and a coffee before day two of weekend zoomi (zoom uni). Feeling pretty lucky in the current new norm and thinking of Melbourne and Victoria

22.01.2022 Supper with the very best colleague, mentor, moral compass and friend a Councillor could hope to have. You are more than we deserve Councillor Justine McLaughlin it is my privilege to learn, work and serve our community alongside you. An excellent three years anniversary for me and 8!!!!! For you on Council. EK.

22.01.2022 Congratulations now Emeritus Mayor Mark Bennett and heres to a well earned break from your duties as chair of our Council. As a resident, I am so very grateful for your eight years of thoughtful, well measured service during some trying times. As a fellow Councillor, i am grateful for your advice and support and leadership. I have absolutely no doubt that your commitment and love for your community will mean that we continue to see plenty of you.

21.01.2022 Some neighbours and I have been thinking about a shared compost.

21.01.2022 Here’s what we will be discussing as a Council today. Starting with a briefing at 4.30pm. Official meeting zoom starts at 6pm tonight. Public submissions on any matters received until midday today.

20.01.2022 Congratulations to our General Manager on her second annual performance review. I liken her to Marie Condo. She has unpacked our messy drawers, she has asked us which things spark joy and she is now methodically organising those things back into a much more organised drawer! All the while, planning to deliver some fantastic community outcomes and long term financial security.

20.01.2022 Democracy is not a state, its an act and each generation must do its part to build, what we call, a beloved community.

20.01.2022 trees and heat mitigation. A really good article!

20.01.2022 Hmmm. What to do with mine?

19.01.2022 sitting in a no smoking zone in a shopping centre carpark breathing in smoke and garbage bin aromas zooming in, because inclusion without stigma is not just our duty, its the law. My submission to the Local Planning Panel re how a few changes to our chamber at Council will make us finally compliant with disability laws, with the added bonus of creating a more flexible space and improved financial gain. Its surely a win right? : Its a pleasure to make a submission for the L...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Mayor Mark Bennett, the chair of Council, our leader, my mentor and my friend will be finishing his term on Council in just a few weeks. Ive learned so very much working alongside him. He is patient, wise and generous. He leaves us in a stronger financial and operational position than we have been for many years. I will miss him in the Chamber.

16.01.2022 In response to a recent question about Councils policy on solar panels, here is the prompt response I received from the planners: installation of solar panels is exempt development under the SEPP (Infrastructure) 2007 and as such is not subject of development consent of Council. As Council is not responsible for the decision to install solar panels, the onus is on the owner to make a decision re installation and placement. When installing solar panels, the location/positioni...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Council have agreed to investigate pricing in suburb wide sites of anti-social behaviour that may benefit from the crime deterrent that CCTV cameras and footage provide. A safety audit in 2019 determined that nowhere warranted such extreme and expensive big brother measures, however with Federal Safer Communities grants potentially still floating around, it cant hurt to investigate. I learned about the success of the Fremantle network and volunteer monitoring at a conference in 2018. In this case, there was ongoing theft, vandalism and crime and the cameras proved a useful deterrent and tool.

15.01.2022 A merry LITTLE Christmas with the in-laws just got relocated to our house. but if running around like a headless chook for a few hours means that the cousins and grandparents can be together, it’s worth it. #justaddgin

08.01.2022 So much work goes on behind the scenes before fantastic ideas like this one come to fruition. Congratulations to all involved. Here is an opportunity for the immediate benefits of connection, plus longitudinal observation of the mental health benefits for remembering over time in multiple generations. I read some years ago about teenage mental health finding grounding in a sense of understanding our roots, our belonging in our families and our broader communities... the fit with Macquarie in understanding the benefits of collective remembering in our seniors seems a beautiful thing. Bolster that with the Perkins work to make connection even easier. Some partnerships are just a beautiful thing to see unfold. Definitely watching this space with deep interest.

08.01.2022 Parking meters are to be removed from Buffalo Creek, following a decision of Hunters Hill Council tonight (Monday 14 September 2020). Council determined that t...he parking meters will be removed from Buffalo Creek at the conclusion of the current contract. Council at its meeting tonight also determined to seek public feedback on plans that aim to foster a sustainable and thriving future for Hunters Hill and make getting around easier. A draft Community Infrastructure Plan (CIP) and a draft Bike Plan will be placed on public exhibition. A community consultation program for the draft CIP will also occur throughout September and October, in addition to the public exhibition period. 07.01.2022 When is too soon to #rockthemask in solidarity with Victoria? When we have even more cases than have already been effortlessly spread by innocent people just going about their business? The WHO now advise governments to recommend the use of masks in places where social distancing is difficult. Sooo... while we wait, Im trying some on for size. Who knows! We might actually decrease the spread if we get on board before the transmission ship sails this time? https://www.who.int//advice-for-/when-and-how-to-use-masks

07.01.2022 Well we may we have busy brush turkeys in Hunters Hill, but Ryde has legless ducks. Mayor Jerome Laxale #lordloveit

06.01.2022 There are now close to 10 000 email addresses registered for short weekly e-news from Council. If you’re not one of them, and if (like me) you discard flyers and brochures without a second glance, how are you staying abreast of all the local news? More capital works and maintenance, partnerships and initiatives than our suburb has seen in years. AND more ways to engage, participate and communicate than ever. Here’s the latest.

06.01.2022 I love how locals love to celebrate all local initiatives. Good on Deckhouse Woolwich for spreading out the tables and sharing some stunning classical guitar music.

05.01.2022 All you need to know about Carols Sunday night. Council staff have done an amazing job of COVID safety to make sure that we can still gather on the field. All we need to do is follow the State rules for everyone’s sake, be patient, be kind and be merry! #seeyouthere

05.01.2022 Local chats in the municipality

04.01.2022 This is a tricky bit of road. Some cars stop at the speed bump as if it were a crossing, others get air flying over it as they divert off Ryde road gasping for extra minutes saved on their route to the city. This new sign caught my eye today and I smiled back at it, a good solution until the approval and budget for a formal crossing solution.

04.01.2022 Last night at an extraordinary meeting of Council, we elected A new mayor. In the days leading up to this meeting, I was unable to agree to a deal offered to me by Councillor Zac Miles and as a result he informed me some days ago that he and his political party cohort would be voting for now Mayor Ross Williams (and congratulations to Ross). Its not personal, its politics. So it was with some surprise that I discovered, at the meeting, that not only had Councillor Miles d...ecided to still nominate and then withdraw his nomination before the vote (), he would also be asking us to reiterate all the reasons we had put ourselves forward for the role. So, unprepared but honest, and knowing that a deal and decision had already been reached behind closed doors, my response is around the 4.25 mark in the YouTube video. In local government, in our beautiful neck of the woods, it should and must be personal and politics is a game for another level of government. Of course Im disappointed, being your Mayor would have been a great honour, and I reckon Id have worked hard with the support of my fellow Councillors to do the job well, but as I mention in my impromptu speech, I hope that now, the party political game playing will stop and we can work together as a Council with Mayor Williams as our chair, to support the General Manager more and to oversee good planning for our whole Municipality. 04.01.2022 A new (old) place to have your catch ups and get togethers with friends and family. The Henley Party Hut will be available for booking in the new year.

03.01.2022 Not only a pivot but a CRACKING success story with demonstrated gratitude and multiple social outcomes. and theyre not stopping. Just take a look at what stagekings have been coming up with in their ISO.

03.01.2022 Nike made this ad on the heels of Serena Williams outburst at a tennis umpire. Absolutely her outburst was out of line, poor role modelling, bullying and she deserved her fine as much as every man who has gotten away with much worse deserved theirs, but who were instead given a moment in the press and a slap on the wrist at worst. Nike are very clever at tailoring their branding and marketing to the values they read in society. Sure, at the end of the day its marketing... but if a sporting goods company are seeing and responding to an appetite shift away from misogyny, perhaps more business and political leaders should take a look too.
